“Third Way, the center-left think tank, is urging moderate Democrats to back common-sense reforms to prevent the left from pushing court expansion, an unpopular position that could motivate the G.O.P. base and alienate independents,” reported Puck News. “Instead, Third Way executive Lanae Erickson is suggesting that Dems pass legislation that would place 18-year term limits on justices—a cadence that would eventually lead to the appointment of two new justices every presidential term.”

Let’s call this a “yes … and?” situation. Term limits are a fine idea for judges, especially when coupled with strict ethics reforms, which Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, is ready to unleash if Democrats win the Senate this November.

But term limits aren’t enough, and I’m not sure where the notion that court expansion is “an unpopular opinion” is coming from. A recent Marquette Law School poll paints a different picture:

Yes, term limits and ethics are overwhelmingly popular and should be the first step. But expanding the court is still supported by a majority of Americans. Is it contentious and controversial? Of course. Republicans won’t surrender their ill-gotten Supreme Court gains lightly. But it’s a divided country, and attitudes toward the court are aptly aligned with our nation’s partisan split.

There is no reason that Democrats shouldn’t expand the court if given the opportunity.

The stakes are simple: Democrats can pass all the popular legislation they want, but it means little if a right-wing Supreme Court can simply strike it down—and continue rolling back rights that Americans have relied on for generations. And no, there’s no shrugging their shoulders about it. Democrats can’t simultaneously claim they’re powerless because of the court and also refuse to use the constitutional power they have to reshape it.

Despite this, Third Way has been surprisingly progressive of late, embracing an economic populism that includes dramatically expanding affordable housing, taking on entrenched corporate interests, and even declaring healthcare a “basic human right” while pushing automatic coverage for everyone.

Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud was arrested Tuesday in a public park in Richfield, several miles northwest of the Mall of America, after he paid $600 to an undercover FBI employee posing as a member of the Islamic State group for the rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition, the agency said.

Mohamud appeared in a yellow jail uniform for his initial appearance Wednesday in federal court in St Paul. He told the judge he did not have a job, own a house or a car, or have any money in the bank. He was represented by Siri Carlson McDowell, a federal public defender. Carlson McDowell and relatives of Mohamud declined to comment after the hearing.

Assisted suicide is intended as a “dignified” last resort, typically for people who are terminally ill, they wrote. In recent years, “too many people are receiving the procedure without the opportunity for careful reflection about it with a health provider.”

The three countries in August signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement committing them to come to each other’s aid in the event one were attacked.

A man has been shot by police outside Sweden’s Royal Palace this evening.

The shooting took place in Stockholm after a man was said to have been carrying a weapon and acting aggressively.

Police said officers fired live rounds during the incident, with witnesses reporting hearing between four and five shots.

According to local media, the man was armed with a knife, approached a guard near the Royal Palace and asked to be shot.

The suspect was hit by police gunfire, aftonbladet.se reports. He has been taken to hospital by ambulance and is said to be seriously injured but not in a life-threatening condition.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s new antisemitism strategy doubles funding for a community grant program whose partners include an anti-Israel organization previously led by Linda Sarsour, while omitting Zionism and declining to adopt a definition of antisemitism.

According to City Hall’s announcement, the strategy includes $6.4 million for Partners Against the Hate, or PATH, doubling the program’s funding from the previous year. However, among PATH’s six core partners is the Arab American Association of New York, which Sarsour led for more than a decade. The organization supported the Columbia University’s violent Gaza encampment and other anti-Israel protests following October 7, according to the New York Post.

The September 29 announcement coincided with his wife’s participation in a luxury Islamic wellness retreat in Portugal organized by Women Sanctuary, which had publicly called for Israel’s abolition.

Sarsour’s relationship with Mamdani extends beyond campaigning for him. She warned that her activist network would hold him to his campaign promises, including dismantling the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group, which responds to major protests and other emergencies. “Electing Zohran doesn’t mean we’re going to let him do whatever the hell he wants when he gets to City Hall,” Sarsour said.

Sarsour has a long history of antisemitic statements, including her assertion: “Israel was built on the idea that Jews are supreme to everybody else.” Sarsour left Women’s March leadership in 2019 amid controversies over antisemitism.

Russian authorities told the World Health Organization (WHO) Tuesday that “no cases of plague” have been recorded in the Irkutsk Oblast region of Siberia, according to the UN health agency, after reports that a lab worker had died of possible pneumonic plague.

However, the WHO says Russian officials have not yet told the agency what the pathogen that killed the lab worker is.

“WHO is aware of media reports that a laboratory worker in Irkutsk oblast, in the Russian Federation, died of suspected pneumonic plague, and that nearly 200 of her contacts were under medical observation and being tested,” the WHO said.

“On 3 October, WHO asked the Russian authorities under the International Health Regulations (IHR) for any further information they had, so we could assess the risk.
