Saturday’s strike on the Riyadh airport marks the deadliest attack since the Houthis seized power in neighboring Yemen over a decade ago. Reuters called it the “deadliest such attack in the kingdom in more than a decade.”

It is believed to be the first time an AI agent has sent fabricated information to authorities, but is the latest in a series of incidents involving rogue AI activity, including hacking systems or taking control of platforms.

Citing Anthropic, the police department said its AI agent had been running a test that involved interactions with randomly selected websites when it had sent the fake tip.

The company behind the Claude chatbot discovered the breach on 28 September, more than two months after the message had been sent, and shut down the automatic testing process that was behind it, police said.

But authorities were not notified for another nine days – on 7 October.

“The company must strengthen its safeguards to prevent similar incidents from impacting city systems without the city’s knowledge,” Philadelphia police said in a statement to local media.

It is believed to be the first time an AI agent has sent fabricated information to authorities, but is the latest in a series of incidents involving rogue AI activity, including hacking systems or taking control of platforms.

Citing Anthropic, the police department said its AI agent had been running a test that involved interactions with randomly selected websites when it had sent the fake tip.

The company behind the Claude chatbot discovered the breach on 28 September, more than two months after the message had been sent, and shut down the automatic testing process that was behind it, police said.

But authorities were not notified for another nine days – on 7 October.

“The company must strengthen its safeguards to prevent similar incidents from impacting city systems without the city’s knowledge,” Philadelphia police said in a statement to local media.

“The two-month delay in detecting and reporting the incident to the city is unacceptable.”

The WHO said the Russian state regulator reported that tests of the lab worker and those who came in contact with her were negative for the high-threat pathogens tested, that her contacts still showed no symptoms, and that no further linked cases of severe pneumonia had been identified.

“Based on the information provided … (the) WHO has not identified evidence of ongoing transmission associated with this event. A key uncertainty remains the absence of a confirmed diagnosis in the deceased laboratory worker,” it said in a statement.

The lab worker fell ill and died in undisclosed circumstances on Oct 2, prompting authorities to quarantine about 200 people and causing public health fears on social media.

Global health officials have been extra alert to fatal pneumonia cases of undetermined cause since the COVID-19 pandemic, which began with a cluster of fast-spreading fatal respiratory illness in China. The cause of individual pneumonia cases can often not be determined.
