A fire ripped through a hotel in New Delhi on Wednesday, killing at least 21 people, many of them foreign nationals, police and local media said.
The fire broke out in the morning at Flourish Stay, a bed-and-breakfast in a congested neighbourhood in the south of the city, Delhi Police said in a statement.
“It is with profound sorrow that 21 persons have been declared dead in this tragic incident,” police said.
Several of those killed were foreigners, mainly from Central Asia and Africa, the Press Trust of India news agency reported, quoting unnamed officials.

Police in New York have issued an urgent warning after mystery men were spotted climbing in and out of sewers through manholes, prompting fears that copycats could put themselves at serious risk. Officials say there have been at least three known incidents involving people entering the city’s vast underground sewer network since early May.
While no injuries have been reported, authorities described the activity as both illegal and “extremely dangerous”, warning that those venturing underground could face deadly hazards. A spokesperson for New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection said sewers contain numerous risks, including toxic gases, unstable surfaces, flooding and confined spaces.

LONDON — The fatal stabbing last year in Britain of a teenager who was handcuffed by police while his killer stood nearby erupted into a debate on Tuesday about policing, race and knife crime.
The killing of 18-year-old Henry Nowak in December drew renewed attention after the killer was sentenced to life with a minimum of 21 years in prison on Monday, and following the release of a video showing police dismissing Nowak when he said that he had been stabbed.
The killer, Vickrum Digwa, 23, who is Sikh, had reported to police that he was the victim of a racist attack by Nowak, who was white.

Nine people, including five minors, were arrested during a large gathering of teens Monday night in Naperville, police said.
Large groups began to gather downtown Naperville around 5 p.m., according to Naperville police. Several teams of officers worked the gathering, during which “several juveniles and young adults chose to commit violations of state law and local ordinances,” Naperville police said in a enws release.
The crowds were dispersed by 11 p.m. By the end of the gathering, Naperville police issued nearly three dozen citations alongside the arrests, police said.

Another professor has joined the chorus of scholars warning that students’ reading skills and attention spans are abysmal.
Writing in the Chronicle of Higher Education, literature Professor Tyler Jagt told of an assignment for his rhetoric and writing class that asked students to read a 20-page paper. Not one student finished the paper.
“It was the same length I had assigned for five years and the same length I had read without complaint as an undergraduate a decade ago,” wrote Jagt, who has taught literature and critical writing at Mercer University, James Madison University, and Wake Forest University.

Brendan John Geier, a 26-year-old resident of Madison, New Jersey who allegedly sank his teeth into the arm of a federal agent during violent riots outside the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, was previously accused of distributing child pornography.
On the evening of May 28, ICE deportation officers were conducting security and crowd-control operations near the facility. A large group of demonstrators, including Geier, was blocking a roadway used for vehicles entering and leaving the site.
One agent, identified by prosecutors only as Victim-1, moved toward Geier, causing him to lose his balance. Geier allegedly kicked Victim-1 in the leg. In response, the officer struck Geier’s leg with a baton.

A criminal complaint was unsealed in federal court in Detroit against Vincent Munster, who is chief of the virus ecology section at Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, Montana, and Claude Kwe, who works with him.
Munster and Kwe were stopped at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in January after a flight from Paris and nine days in the Republic of Congo. An outbreak of the mpox disease has been linked to more than 2,000 deaths in Congo, a vast region in central Africa, though a two-year outbreak was declared over in April.

Cristian Romario Saenz-Argueta, a 31-year-old illegal alien from El Salvador, was arrested in Prince William County, Virginia, on May 26 and charged with one count of rape by force, threat, or intimidation, and two counts of carnal knowledge of a child between the ages of 13 and 14.
According to police, Saenz-Argueta used social media to contact a girl who was under 15 years old, portraying himself as 18 years old. Police allege that in November of last year, Saenz-Argueta met up with the young girl in a parking lot and sexually assaulted her.
President Trump has decided to not recognize the sovereignty of the state of Somaliland. The administration went further in a report from the State Department claiming the U.S. recognizes Somalia as having sovereignty over Somaliland. An Iowa man is suspected of fatally shooting six relatives before taking his own life on Monday, authorities said.
Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies said officers responded to a report of a shooting at about 12:12 p.m. Monday at a home on Park Avenue in Muscatine, a city roughly 50 miles southeast of Cedar Rapids.
When officers arrived, they discovered four victims inside the residence suffering from gunshot wounds. All four were pronounced dead at the scene, Kies said during a news conference.
Investigators quickly identified the suspected gunman as Ryan Willis McFarland, 52, of Muscatine. Police said McFarland had left the residence before officers arrived.
