No clear winner emerged in Israel’s elections on Wednesday morning with the vote count still under way. Neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition nor the opposition bloc, led by Gadi Eisenkot, secured a majority, according to exit polls on Tuesday night.

With 60% of the ballots counted, Netanyahu’s Likud party secured 21.4% of votes and Eisenkot’s Yashar had 16.2%, according to official election data.

One or the other would need to obtain majority support in Israel’s 120-seat parliament, known as the Knesset, in order to form a government.

On Wednesday morning, the head of Israel’s main left-wing party called for his opposition allies to work with Arab parties to unseat Netanyahu.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Israel’s Arab political parties of election fraud Wednesday, amid record-level Arab voter turnout and election wins in the ongoing Knesset polls.

Netanyahu alleged that the Arab parties “support terrorism and the elimination of the Jewish state” and had “stolen” the elections “through serious criminal offenses of bribery, threats, violence, forgeries, and the use of prohibited software to mobilize voters,” according to a translation of his statement posted on X.

The two main Arab parties are Ra’am and the Joint List, according to the Times of Israel.

ISLAMABAD — Iran remains open to talks with the U.S. under a Pakistan-brokered interim deal reached in June to end the conflict, Tehran’s ambassador to Islamabad said Saturday, accusing Washington of undermining diplomacy and prolonging the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz.

Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam said that Iran recently conveyed through Pakistan that it was prepared to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if Washington lifted its naval blockade, but accused U.S. President Donald Trump of rejecting the proposal by insisting the blockade of Iranian ports would continue.

Pakistan and Qatar helped broker the June agreement, which sought to restore shipping through the strait, lift the U.S. naval blockade and begin negotiations toward a broader deal addressing Iran’s nuclear program.

Moghadam, speaking at a seminar in Islamabad, said that Iranian officials had conveyed their willingness to reopen the strait during visits to Tehran by Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Muni r, provided Washington ended its blockade.

Moghadam also said that Tehran would study the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement that includes Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey before deciding whether to support it, describing it as a potential instrument for unity. “We will study the Mecca Agreement, and if it is good, we will support it,” he said.

“It is truly remarkable that while these people go to discuss what they call ‘peace in the region’, Egypt and its parliament declare support for the so-called defence of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and in doing so, declare war against the Republic of Yemen,” said Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, a member of the Houthis’ political bureau, in a Telegram post.

Intel has announced the acquisition of Israeli quantum computing software company Classiq for $2.2 billion. This is the biggest-ever acquisition of a quantum computing company and the second biggest acquisition in Israel by Intel after the $15.3 billion acquisition of Mobileye in 2017. Tel Aviv-based Classiq has developed an operating system for quantum computers.

This acquisition represents not only a gamble for Intel, which is mainly focused on developing and manufacturing core chips for computers and servers, on the quantum computing market, but also an entry into the realm of operating systems. In many respects, the deal is reminiscent of Google’s acquisition of Android, which was a pioneering operating system for mobile phones, enabling Google to gain a foothold in a vast number of mobile devices during the mobile revolution and, in the process, to exert control over aspects of their hardware.

Classiq, founded by CEO Nir Minerbi, along with Yehuda and Amir Naveh (a father and son serving as CTO and CPO respectively), will become Intel’s global development center for quantum computing. Beyond being the largest quantum-related acquisition in history, this deal marks the acquisition of an Israeli quantum company and represents the first time a big tech firm has purchased technology in this sector.

DAMASCUS: Syria reopened its main border crossing with Jordan on Wednesday (Oct 28) as the two countries reaffirmed ties that were strained by a deadly retaliatory strike by Jordanian forces.

Jordan’s strike – a reprisal against a gun attack on a church – sparked the worst crisis between the two countries since the ousting of longtime Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.

Syria condemned the strikes on the country’s south as an “unacceptable violation”, while Jordan said it killed more than 20 militant fighters in its raid.

Jordan sought to ease tensions on Tuesday, saying it had “great respect” for its neighbour and expressed regret for civilian casualties.

The main Nassib border crossing, known as Jaber on the Jordanian side, was closed following the strikes, but passenger and commercial movement will return to normal as of Wednesday morning, senior Syrian customs official Mazen Alloush told state news agency SANA.

Last week, gunmen opened fire during a funeral service at a Greek Orthodox church in southern Jordan’s Karak governorate, killing nine people and wounding 25 – prompting a military response from Amman.

While Jordan insisted it coordinated its airstrikes with Syria, Damascus denied the claim, and Syria’s civil defence agency said the raids killed seven people, including three children.

On Tuesday, Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi spoke to his Syrian counterpart and emphasised Jordan’s “full respect for Syria’s sovereignty … and security”, while also expressing “sorrow and grief over the death of innocent civilian victims”, according to a joint statement.

A huge caveat in all of the current analysis is that the high number of as-yet-uncounted absentee ballots – mostly representing the votes of Israeli soldiers – mean that we are not expecting to have a clear idea of the final results for another day or two.

Overnight, both Netanyahu and Eisenkot addressed their supporters, pledging to form the next government.

“The right-wing bloc has a clear, decisive majority among the Zionist public, among the Jewish public and all those who support the Jewish state. That is what has become clear. A decisive majority,” the PM told his celebrating supporters – although he stopped short of declaring victory.

“We must form a strong, national, right-wing government. That is what must be done,” he added.

“The public has chosen change,” Eisenkot told his Yashar party after exit polls came out – most of which were initially more favourable to the opposition. “The coalition of failure has lost the people’s trust. The Israeli public voted against Benjamin Netanyahu continuing as prime minister.”

“I will work with my partners to ensure that the people’s decision is translated into a Zionist government: stable and good for all of Israeli’s citizens. And quickly – because that is what this moment demands, and because the country needs to be brought back together.”

Two of America’s largest defense contractors reported record order backlogs Tuesday, with RTX securing nearly $23 billion in Tomahawk cruise missile contracts as the Pentagon faced mounting costs to replace weapons expended during the war with Iran.

RTX disclosed a record $340 billion companywide backlog, including $164 billion in defense orders, while Northrop Grumman reported a record $109.6 billion in outstanding contracts. Although neither company attributed its overall backlog to the Iran conflict, RTX secured major orders for Tomahawk missiles and missile defense interceptors, weapons the U.S. military expended during the fighting.

RTX reported quarterly revenue climbed 11% to nearly $25 billion, according to its earnings release. Its Raytheon defense division generated $8 billion in sales, a 14% increase from a year earlier, driven by higher production volumes on naval weapons, Patriot air defense systems, Standard Missiles and Tomahawk cruise missiles.

Raytheon’s operating profit jumped 32% to $1.13 billion, while RTX secured more than $81 billion in new commercial aerospace and defense awards during the quarter.

RTX CEO Chris Calio said approximately $23 billion in Tomahawk contracts and more than $14 billion in AMRAAM missile orders accounted for the majority of the company’s nearly $59 billion in quarterly defense bookings. The Tomahawk orders included a $22.9 billion contract awarded in August to expand production for the U.S. Navy.
