Iran ‘toughened’ conditions for ending war after US deal collapse: Guards spokesman– www.channelnewsasia.com

EXCERPT:

TEHRAN: Revolutionary Guards spokesman Hossein Mohebi said on Tuesday (Sep 22) that Iran had hardened its conditions for ending the war with the United States following the collapse of a June deal, adding Washington now had “no choice” but to accept its demands.

Iran had previously agreed with the United States to a memorandum of understanding laying out a pathway to a permanent settlement of the conflict, only for the deal to later unravel as each side accused the other of violating it.

“They broke the agreement and committed another vicious act. We have therefore toughened our conditions,” Mohebi told AFP in a rare exclusive interview in Tehran, noting that if the US persisted with its current course, “they will only make things difficult for themselves”.

“We are not their playthings, and they cannot unilaterally violate an agreement they signed whenever they please.”

During the interview, Mohebi outlined Iran’s view of the nearly seven-month Middle East war and the prospects for ending it as diplomatic efforts stall.

“We believe we have won this war, and we are currently consolidating that victory into a total deterrent force,” he added.

The June memorandum of understanding included Iranian demands on the lifting of US oil sanctions, removing its naval blockade on Iranian ports, unfreezing Iranian assets abroad, and ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon.

Since it fell apart, however, Mohebi said Iran had toughened its demands, including by seeking the release of the full US$24 billion in frozen Iranian assets up front before negotiations, rather than in stages.

The alert, which asked people to remain indoors and avoid open areas, was lifted a short while later.

G7 leaders representing Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States said in a statement “we call on the Houthis to immediately cease all military actions”.

“All threats and attacks against civilian shipping, and to return to the political process in good faith,” it added, while calling on Iran “to end its arming of and support for the Houthis”.

Britain has agreed to provide some military support to Saudi Arabia, UK defence minister Luke Pollard said, while France also pledged to help secure Saudi energy infrastructure, a diplomatic source told AFP.

“This in no way involves taking part in the conflict with the Houthis,” the French source added.

The Houthis have carried out attacks against facilities belonging to Saudi oil giant Aramco in the Red Sea port city of Yanbu.

The East-West Pipeline – a crucial crude oil export route – has also been shut down following drone attacks launched from Iraq, according to Riyadh.

Macron, in his speech to the United Nations, deplored the humanitarian situation in Gaza – from which Hamas led the Oct 7, 2023 attack, the deadliest ever against Israel – as well as actions by Israel in the West Bank.

“What is our credibility worth if we remain inactive on Gaza? Some claim that peace has been achieved, but this has not opened up humanitarian deliveries. It is a spectacle that shames us all,” Macron said.

“Look at what is happening in West Bank, where there are violations every day. In the name of what? Hamas has never struck in the West Bank. This every day makes it more impossible to achieve respect for the Palestinian people’s legitimate right to exist.”

The Palestinian Authority, led by Hamas’s rivals, have semi-autonomy in major urban areas of the West Bank, with Israel controlling most of the territory.

Hamas took over Gaza in 2007, two years after Israel pulled out and dismantled settlements.

Netanyahu has poor relations with Macron, who led a push by Western nations at last year’s UN General Assembly to recognise a Palestinian state.

France recently joined Britain in imposing sanctions on products from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, again angering the Israeli government.

Sen. Jon Husted became the latest battleground Republican this week to call for a quick end to the Iran war, as panic grows over how high gas prices and President Donald Trump’s agenda could imperil the party’s chances in November.

“The war needs to come to an end as quickly as possible so that we can lower gas prices,” the Ohio senator told POLITICO, in his furthest comments yet on the matter.

Coming after Iowa Senate nominee Ashley Hinson, who broke from Trump over the war on Monday, and Michigan Senate nominee Mike Rogers, who followed suit hours later, Husted’s comments are another example of the pressure he and other Republicans are under to address prices at the pump. Several candidates are creating some distance from Trump, as voters continue to blame the president for the current economy and the Iran conflict for high costs of living.

Husted said in the interview that he still thinks Iran needs to reach a deal with Trump to end the conflict, but added: “I don’t know anybody that doesn’t want the war to come to an end.”

He has a finer line to walk with Trump in his state, and Republicans close to him say he can’t and won’t completely break with the president. Husted does not plan to support the Democratic-led war powers resolution when it comes up for a vote in the Senate this week, a spokesperson said. And Trump and Vice President JD Vance are expected to visit the state in the coming weeks to shore up his campaign and drive GOP turnout.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said Saturday that American forces have supported the movement of more than one billion barrels of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz in recent months while enforcing a total naval blockade on Iranian ports.

“CENTCOM forces have supported more than one billion barrels of crude oil leaving the Gulf. That’s one billion barrels of crude oil out through the Strait of Hormuz in the last couple of months,” CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper announced in a video statement.

Cooper said U.S. forces reached the figure while assisting more than 2,000 commercial ship transits. “We’ve reached this significant milestone while assisting over 2,000 commercial ship transits through the Strait by providing coordinated protection. Clearly, momentum is building. Primary transit lanes in the Strait are clear of mines,” he added.

Cooper continued, “Thousands of ships have passed through the Strait. Over one billion barrels of crude have been shipped from Gulf partners through the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran has exported zero barrels thanks to our ironclad blockade.”

The commander went on to state that volumes have increased in recent weeks and days. “The effort is paying off. The volume of crude oil, cargo, and liquid natural gas these past two weeks is higher than at any point in the past six months.” He further noted that CENTCOM was working with U.S. government agencies, the six Gulf Cooperation Council states, insurers, and shipping companies to raise traffic through the waterway.

President Donald Trump is reviewing possible next steps in the U.S.-Iran conflict this week, which have been reported as a choice among a negotiated agreement, continued economic isolation, or a significant expansion of military action.

While speaking with Fox News, Trump listed three primary paths for ending the conflict. These include Iran reaching a deal with the United States, the United States allowing the Iranian economy to deteriorate further under existing pressure, or a decision on whether to conduct far larger strikes. He asked when he might choose the last option and said Iran “better behave.”

Earlier in the week he told Axios he faced a “big decision” on whether to “annihilate” the Iranian regime. He added that “anything could happen.”

Trump says he has a ‘big decision’ coming up on Iran: ‘Do I want to go in and annihilate them?’

President Trump said Thursday that he was at a crossroads over whether to renew attacks in Iran to wipe out the regime and bring the war to an end.

“I have a big decision coming up. Do I want to go in and annihilate them or do I not?” he told Axios. “It’s a big decision. Anything could happen with me.”

Trump’s comments echo previous threats he’s levied against Tehran since the war began.

But this time, he said, his next move is likely to be influenced by his meetings with Gulf allies at next week’s United Nations General Assembly meeting.

“I want to find out where they are and how they are doing. We have been very protective of them,” Trump added.

The Houthis have been taking islands, ports, and Red Sea coast territory in a bid to rescue Iran from U.S. onslaught. The vote took place late Tuesday, and for a third time, the US House voted to end the war in Iran, attempting to cut President Donald Trump’s ability to continue military action.

The roll call, 220-204, was similar to earlier efforts this summer, with a few more Republicans joining all Democrats voting to bring an end to the conflict. None of the resolutions have made it to the president’s desk, where Trump would almost certainly veto the measure.

“Remember when Donald Trump said that this war would last just a few weeks?” said Democrat Representative Seth Moulton, who served as a Marine during the Iraq War and pushed the resolution forward.

He said it’s time for Congress to “actually ask tough questions, as the Constitution directs us to do, rather than be subservient to another warmongering administration.”

Republican Representative Brian Mast of Florida, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, questioned which military resources Democrats would want to remove from the region where he said Iran remains a threat.

Mast said Trump is against “forever wars, and that is what he is ending” — the decades of hostilities from Iran.

“They are a continuous ongoing threat to the United States,” Mast said. “Enough is enough.”

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Iran has contacted the United States “directly” and “very much” wants a deal, expressing hope that the nearly seven-month conflict is approaching its end after predicting last week that the fighting would conclude following November’s midterm elections.

“Hopefully we’re toward the end of the war,” Trump told reporters after arriving in North Carolina, responding to a question about what phase the conflict had reached.

Trump then turned to the prospect of an agreement with Tehran.

“Iran is very much wanting to make a deal,” he said. “We’ll see how that works out.”

Asked moments later whether he had recently heard from Iran directly or through intermediaries, Trump replied: “Directly.”

The disclosure follows a series of increasingly explicit statements from Trump that the conflict could be approaching its end. Last week, he predicted the fighting would conclude following the November midterm elections, arguing that Tehran could no longer sustain the pressure.

“I think the war will end immediately after the election because they can’t hold out any longer,” Trump said.

By Monday, Trump was publicly describing Tehran as actively seeking an agreement while leaving the decision over renewed engagement to Washington.

“The failing Nation of Iran wants to make a deal, quickly and badly,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I will determine whether or not the U.S.A. will choose to engage — the concept of which we are open to.”

Saudi pipeline shutdown threatens oil exports to Europe and Asia as kingdom relies on stored supplies– www.euronews.com

Saudi Arabia is relying on stored oil to maintain exports after drone attacks shut its East-West pipeline, threatening deliveries to buyers in Europe and Asia.

Saudi Arabia’s energy ministry announced the shutdown on Friday as a precaution, after the pipeline was attacked in the Riyadh and Medina regions last Thursday.

It said emergency and technical teams were securing the pipeline and checking its safety.

Saudi and Iraqi authorities said the drone attack originated in Iraq. The ministry’s announcement did not say when pumping would resume or give a full account of the damage.

Saudi oil buyers and traders quoted in reports published on Sunday estimated that a prolonged shutdown could put at risk around 4 million barrels a day, or about 4% of global oil supply.

They estimated that oil stored at the Red Sea port of Yanbu could keep exports going for five to seven days. Saudi authorities have not confirmed either estimate.

The effect on deliveries will depend on how quickly pumping resumes and how much stored oil is available.

Brent crude futures rose around 3% in early trading on Monday following further attacks on energy facilities and shipping in the Middle East.

A route around Hormuz

The roughly 1,200km pipeline carries oil from eastern Saudi Arabia to Yanbu on the west coast. It allows exports to leave through the Red Sea without tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Aramco said in May that it had increased pumping through the pipeline to its maximum capacity of 7 million barrels a day during the first quarter, helping maintain exports while shipping through Hormuz was disrupted.

The pipeline also supplies refineries on Saudi Arabia’s west coast, so its capacity is not the same as the amount exported.

The shutdown does not mean global oil supplies immediately fall by 7 million barrels a day. Tankers can still load oil stored near export terminals, but those supplies will run down unless more oil arrives.

Deliveries to Europe and Asia

From Yanbu, tankers heading to Europe can sail north through the Red Sea towards the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean. Egypt’s SUMED pipeline offers another route, carrying oil between the Red Sea and Mediterranean coasts.

The direct sea route to Asia runs south through Bab el-Mandeb, the narrow passage between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and then towards the Indian Ocean.

That route faces a separate threat from Yemen’s Houthis, who have seized Perim Island in the passage and the country’s Red Sea coast, effectively taking control of the strait.

Tankers heading to Asia could instead sail north through Suez and then around Africa, but the journey would be much longer. Changing a tanker’s route does not solve the problem of getting oil to Yanbu.

The International Energy Agency said in its September oil market report that stored oil supplies worldwide had fallen by 507 million barrels since February, including 95 million barrels in August alone.

The agency estimated Gulf oil exports at around 13 million barrels a day in August, nearly half their pre-war level. It also reported sharply higher diesel prices in Europe and Asia as disruptions reduced fuel supplies.

“We urge all parties to take effective measures to reopen the Strait of Hormuz at an early date,” said Wang, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Wang urged Iran and the U.S. to “engage in substantive consultations on issues of mutual concern,” and advised both sides to “exercise restraint.”

The Chinese Foreign Ministry insisted Wang’s remarks were consistent with China’s long-standing position on the Strait of Hormuz conflict — with a dash of additional urgency because Iran’s terrorist proxies in Yemen, the Houthis, are now attacking Saudi Arabia and threatening shipping in the Red Sea.

Araghchi claimed Iran still sees the MOU as valid — even though Iran has repeatedly violated it by launching terrorist attacks at civilian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

“Iran is not interested in continuing the conflict, hopes to return to a diplomatic path toward a settlement and at the same time intends to firmly defend its rights and interests. The Iranian side believes that the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran remains in force,” he said, according to Chinese state media.
