Vice President JD Vance’s letter to the Iranians offering another round of peace talks was summarily rejected by the Iranian regime. As a result, the U.S. is threatening to resume air strikes against the Islamic Republic. Iran has countered that it would consider peace talks, but only if brokered by Pakistan.

The U.S. has reached out to its Gulf State allies and informed them there may soon be an “intense” war with Iran. The Strait of Hormuz is not completely opened, and Iran has been able to score hits on tankers still. President Trump once again claimed the war will be over soon, but hinted at a last intense stage.

A letter by US Vice President JD Vance to Iran requesting to resume peace talks has reportedly been rejected . The request was met with the pushback that no new steps will be taken until all seven of Iran’s conditions have been met simultaneously.

Mr Vance contacted a top Iranian political and military official to propose a renewal of peace negotiations, the New York Times reported, quoting a US official and an Iranian official. Mr Vance’s letter was sent just days before the US midterm elections next week, which could be devastating to the Republican Party.

He reached out in a letter sent last week via Qatari meditators and delivered on Sunday to General Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and former commander in chief of the Revolutionary Guards Corps.

The letter reportedly suggested that American and Iranian officials meet soon, adding that he would lead the talks for the US. The proposal was reportedly received well by Iran’s leaders, many of whom view Mr Vance as someone would could help end the conflict, the Iranian official said.

ISLAMABAD — Iran remains open to talks with the U.S. under a Pakistan-brokered interim deal reached in June to end the conflict, Tehran’s ambassador to Islamabad said Saturday, accusing Washington of undermining diplomacy and prolonging the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz.

Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam said that Iran recently conveyed through Pakistan that it was prepared to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if Washington lifted its naval blockade, but accused U.S. President Donald Trump of rejecting the proposal by insisting the blockade of Iranian ports would continue.

Pakistan and Qatar helped broker the June agreement, which sought to restore shipping through the strait, lift the U.S. naval blockade and begin negotiations toward a broader deal addressing Iran’s nuclear program.

Moghadam, speaking at a seminar in Islamabad, said that Iranian officials had conveyed their willingness to reopen the strait during visits to Tehran by Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Muni r, provided Washington ended its blockade.

Moghadam also said that Tehran would study the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement that includes Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey before deciding whether to support it, describing it as a potential instrument for unity. “We will study the Mecca Agreement, and if it is good, we will support it,” he said.

Washington is reportedly preparing for a new military campaign after the November 3 midterm elections, although Trump has yet to make a final decision

The US has warned several Gulf Arab countries to prepare for a short but intense military campaign against Iran after the November 3 US midterm elections, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

According to the WSJ, US President Donald Trump is leaning toward launching major strikes on Iran’s infrastructure and nuclear facilities, although no final decision has been made. The warnings to Gulf allies reportedly indicate that Israel is also preparing to participate in renewed combat operations.

The US is reportedly deploying an additional Patriot air defense missile battery to the region and moving troops away from vulnerable bases in anticipation of Iranian retaliation. Washington is also replenishing munitions and preparing additional aircraft and warships for possible operations.

Iran and the three countries party to the Mecca defense pact — Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan — agreed to continue talks after a “first” meeting in Tehran, Iranian state television reported.

Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman, Pakistani army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and Ibrahim Kalin, the head of Turkey’s intelligence service, met with Iran’s top security officials and negotiators to push for a deal between Tehran and Washington.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei told reporters in Tehran that the agenda for the Monday meeting wasn’t set, but the talks would “undoubtedly address the most pressing threats to regional security,” while Saudi Arabia said in a statement that the delegations hoped to find “ways to de-escalate tensions, enhance regional security and promote its stability.”

Two regional officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak to reporters, told the Associated Press that the war in Yemen and strikes by Iran-backed Houthi rebels against Saudi Arabia were also among the topics discussed during the talks.

The drills, set to continue over 48 hours, came as an Israeli security expert invoked the 1973 Yom Kippur War, when Egypt and Syria used exercises to disguise preparations for a surprise attack, warning that escalating tensions in the region could in fact trigger what he described as a “dangerous miscalculation.”

Seven oil tankers caught fire or were damaged in the Strait of Hormuz overnight after being hit by Iran or striking naval mines, Tehran said Thursday, a markedly high number as tensions rise over concerns about a return to all-out war.

With days before a close election in Israel in which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could lose power, and before next month’s U.S. midterm election in which war-linked high prices have sparked voter anger, there are concerns that U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran could resume.

“Netanyahu wants to attack Iran, that’s not even a question,” Danny Citrinowicz, a researcher at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies and a former Iran specialist in Israel’s military and intelligence services, told The Associated Press.

He accused Israel of rushing into another round with Iran without revamping its strategy. A clear Netanyahu victory in the Oct. 27 election means an attack is almost guaranteed, he said.

Main opposition candidates are likely to focus on domestic issues first, but Citrinowicz said he believed the region is on the way toward “another kinetic escalation.”

Eight weeks after the Trump administration launched Operation Economic Outcast, Iran’s shadow fleet has run out of oil

After the U.S. imposed a blockade on Iranian ports in mid-July, dozens of China-bound Iranian oil tankers were stranded in Asian ports. Latest news reports suggest that they have now been reduced to empty vessels. The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that “dozens of oil tankers holding millions of barrels of crude” floating in Asian waters have “dried up.”

The revelation comes a day after the WSJ confirmed that energy shipments from the region crossed the pre-war mark. “Persian Gulf oil exports have surpassed prewar levels, as an improvised shipping system under U.S. protection is helping tankers move oil through one of Iran’s fiercest waves of attacks in the Strait of Hormuz,” the business daily reported Tuesday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused French President Emmanuel Macron of “welcom[ing] atrocities against Iranians” and mockingly called for the French government to “listen” to hordes of violent rioters in a social media post on Sunday, responding to Macron blaming the war between Iran and America for the riots.

France endured a chaotic weekend in which tens of thousands of people, who local politicians have identified as a variety of leftist and Islamist extremists, engaged in a wave of vandalism and destruction throughout the nation’s largest cities, burning down several major historical sites, most prominently the Limoges City Hall. Macron delivered a national address on Sunday in which he discouraged further violence and blamed the war that began between America and Iran in February for the high cost of living in the country, which he claimed was fueling unrest in the country.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels struck a residential area in Yemen’s third-largest city on Tuesday, killing two teenage girls and renewed attention to the dangers faced by civilians in Taiz, which has been under attack and siege during the country’s escalating conflict.

The Houthis have largely encircled Taiz and cut off most supply routes from government-held areas, putting civilians at “grave risk,” U.N. human rights chief Volker Türk said Tuesday. The U.N. says the siege has sent prices soaring, leaving many residents without food and other necessities.

Also on Tuesday, a senior Yemeni government official said the death toll from a Houthi missile strike a day earlier on a government military camp rose to 73 people, making it the deadliest strike since the resurgence of the conflict over the summer.

The conflict has only intensified since forces from the internationally recognized government and Saudi-led coalition launched airstrikes on Houthi-held Sanaa International Airport in July, shattering a 2022 ceasefire deal that largely stopped fighting in the country’s civil war.

Two of America’s largest defense contractors reported record order backlogs Tuesday, with RTX securing nearly $23 billion in Tomahawk cruise missile contracts as the Pentagon faced mounting costs to replace weapons expended during the war with Iran.

RTX disclosed a record $340 billion companywide backlog, including $164 billion in defense orders, while Northrop Grumman reported a record $109.6 billion in outstanding contracts. Although neither company attributed its overall backlog to the Iran conflict, RTX secured major orders for Tomahawk missiles and missile defense interceptors, weapons the U.S. military expended during the fighting.

RTX reported quarterly revenue climbed 11% to nearly $25 billion, according to its earnings release. Its Raytheon defense division generated $8 billion in sales, a 14% increase from a year earlier, driven by higher production volumes on naval weapons, Patriot air defense systems, Standard Missiles and Tomahawk cruise missiles.

Raytheon’s operating profit jumped 32% to $1.13 billion, while RTX secured more than $81 billion in new commercial aerospace and defense awards during the quarter.

RTX CEO Chris Calio said approximately $23 billion in Tomahawk contracts and more than $14 billion in AMRAAM missile orders accounted for the majority of the company’s nearly $59 billion in quarterly defense bookings. The Tomahawk orders included a $22.9 billion contract awarded in August to expand production for the U.S. Navy.

The Tehran that the world knew is gone. It died in the fires with former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on the first day of the war in February. His son and new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei — wherever he is and in whatever physical condition — witnessed his father, wife, and other close family members die in the same airstrike that wounded him. The White House believed that the conflict would last only a few weeks, but the Islamic Republic has proven less fragile than anticipated by the United States and Israel, who now must deal with surviving Iranian leaders who experienced similar trauma and loss in early strikes. Washington has struggled to appreciate how its devastating attacks altered Tehran’s mindset: The White House instead still expresses confusion at “crazy” Iranian behavior that won’t return to prewar expectations.

I argue here that the “crazy” Iranian behavior confounding Washington in part reflects a subtle but important shift in Iran’s mindset. The U.S.-led attack was end-of-days fodder for true believers inside the upper echelons of the Islamic Republic, who listened to years of paranoid predictions about just such an apocalyptic attack at weekly Friday prayers. The surviving members of Iran’s inner circle — the New Tehran — are now acting based on an altered set of strategic principles. Despite the tactical brilliance of the U.S. military, the White House cannot find an endgame and risks turning a crisis into a catastrophe if it cannot adjust to Tehran’s new reality.

As a former CIA analyst, my job for many years was to set aside my personal views and instead see the world as Iranian leaders do. My goal was to get inside the heads of Tehran’s hardliners, who have very different perspectives than Western analysts. Such an exercise can be uncomfortable to do with violent authoritarians hostile to the United States — especially when the exercise challenges one’s core assumptions and values — but it provides helpful clarity when an adversary’s behavior defies expectations. Of course, Iranian leaders do not regularly broadcast their private deliberations — and their public statements can be misleading bravado and propaganda. So divining Iran’s true leadership decision-making is often more art than science. Yet, it is still possible to deduce much of their unspoken internal logic by analyzing regime actions and viewing the world through Tehran’s ideological lens.

Trump Signs New Order Targeting Russia And Iran– trendingpoliticsnews.com

President Donald Trump has signed a sweeping new executive order establishing massive tariffs and sanctions targeting Russia and countries that help Moscow evade American restrictions, marking another major development in Washington’s efforts to confront foreign adversaries.

The order, signed Friday, October 16, implements the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, legislation Trump signed into law on September 18.

The measure establishes a framework for imposing tariffs of up to 500 percent on Russian imports while threatening additional penalties against countries purchasing Russian energy or helping Moscow circumvent existing sanctions.

However, the president also exercised his authority to temporarily waive the new penalties, leaving the administration with the ability to activate them at a later date.

Under the executive order, goods imported directly from Russia would face an additional 500 percent tariff. Countries identified among the five largest importers of Russian crude oil and natural gas could also face 100 percent tariffs on their goods if they knowingly make new purchases of Russian energy beginning October 18.

The administration is discussing relief for so-called shadow fleet ships — which have carried oil from Russia, Iran and Venezuela — to bring down record freight rates, a U.S. official told Reuters Wednesday. The discussions come days after the Treasury Department said its Oct. 8 sanctions round “effectively neutralizes the vast majority of Iran’s remaining shadow fleet network.”

The talks focus on allowing crude and fuel not under U.S. sanctions to travel on blacklisted ships, with companies needing the Treasury Department’s approval to use them, according to the official. Russian and Iranian oil would remain off-limits, the outlet reported.

The Energy Department, the White House and the offices of Democratic New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Republican North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s requests for comment. The Treasury Department did not comment on the record.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday that Ukraine is ending a brief pause on attacks against Russian oil refineries and will resume the strikes, despite warnings from U.S. President Donald Trump.

“The block [on attacking refineries] is out. We’re done,” Zelensky told the Financial Times in an interview published Thursday.

Ukraine had refrained from striking Russian energy facilities for three days after U.S. President Donald Trump announced what he called an “energy ceasefire,” Zelensky said. During that period, Russian forces continued attacking Ukrainian energy infrastructure and civilian areas. Zelensky said more than 100 civilians were killed in Russian strikes over the past week.

Trump had pressed Ukraine to halt the refinery attacks, which he linked to rising diesel and fuel prices. He also moved to ease restrictions on Russian diesel imports. Moscow never confirmed it had agreed to any reciprocal pause on energy strikes.

Ukraine has for months used long-range drones to target Russian refineries in an effort to reduce revenue and fuel supplies supporting Moscow’s war effort. Western and Ukrainian assessments have reported significant damage to Russia’s refining capacity.

Iran-backed Houthis are working towards building advanced ballistic missiles that could strike targets across Saudi Arabia and Israel, using components shipped from China, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

The weapons under development appear to be modelled on Iran’s Kheibar Shekan, a precision-guided ballistic missile capable of manoeuvring to evade air defence systems, according to an investigation by Conflict Armament Research (CAR), a group that tracks weapons and their supply chains in conflict zones.

A missile based on the Iranian design could travel up to 1,200 miles, potentially bringing all of Saudi Arabia and Israel within striking distance.

The development comes as Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia have intensified in recent weeks, adding to tensions over a Riyadh-led blockade. The attacks, alongside Iran’s continued strikes on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, have contributed to rising oil prices and caused US President Donald Trump to accuse the Houthis of behaving “very badly” in a post on his Social Truth platform.
