President Trump says Republicans will hold a midterm convention before 2026 elections – USA Today

Excerpt:
President Donald Trump said Republicans will hold a midterm convention ahead of the 2026 elections as the White House looks to stave off losses in Congress that historically beset the party in power.
Trump, who last month floated the idea of a midterm convention, confirmed the plans in a Sept. 16 post on Truth Social, though he did not say when the convention would happen, where it would take place or what it would involve.
“The Republicans are going to do a Midterm Convention in order to show the great things we have done since the Presidential Election of 2024,” Trump wrote. “Time and place to be determined. Stay tuned, it will be quite the Event, and very exciting!”
Gerrymandering saps faith in democracy– www.futurity.org

When politicians redraw congressional district maps to favor their party, they may secure short-term victories. But those wins can come at a steep price—a loss of public faith in elections and, ultimately, in democracy itself.
That’s the conclusion of a peer-reviewed study led by University of California, Riverside political scientist Shaun Bowler in Political Research Quarterly.
The research finds that partisan gerrymandering—the manipulation of district boundaries to lock in political advantage—does more than distort representation in Congress. It undermines the belief that elections are fair, a cornerstone of democratic legitimacy.
Bowler, a professor of political science, says survey data from tens of thousands of voters in the 2020 and 2022 elections show that Americans view gerrymandering with the same disdain they reserve for bribery and other blatant forms of political corruption. The difference, he says, is that gerrymandering is carried out in full public view, cloaked in arguable legality.
Consider the current push in Texas, where Republican legislators and Governor Greg Abbott, encouraged by President Donald Trump, are working to redraw congressional districts to add five GOP seats as part a Republican effort to retain control of Congress after next year’s midterm election.
“It’s out in the open,” Bowler says. “They’re saying, ‘We’re rigging the midterm election to produce an outcome.’”

Spanberger lead against Earle-Sears now in single digits– www.washingtonexaminer.com

Excerpt:
Spanberger has 49% support among registered Virginia voters compared to Earle-Sears’s 40% support, according to a Sept. 9 poll released by Virginia Commonwealth University’s L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. Two months prior, Earle-Sears had 37% support. Spanberger’s percentage remains unchanged.
The latest results suggest that while Earle-Sears has been slowly closing the gap, it may not be enough to overtake Spanberger less than two months before Election Day. Early voting in Virginia’s gubernatorial election begins on Friday, Sept. 19.
Less than half of independent voters, 48%, remain undecided about the race.
Pollster L. Douglas Wilder, the Democratic governor of Virginia from 1990 to 1994, said the election will be determined by independent and undecided voters. He also stressed the national significance of the state race this election cycle.
“With Virginia and New Jersey being the only states holding elections in November, there is much speculation as to what these results portend for the political landscape, not just for the Commonwealth, but across the nation,” Wilder said.
The poll shows other Democratic candidates leading their Republican counterparts.

Poll: Capitalism is out … and socialism is in– www.politico.com

The socialist brand is on the rise, according to recent polling, fueling the left flank of the Democratic Party to argue its ideology is becoming more mainstream.
Shortly after Gallup released data showing Democrats and independents are cooling toward capitalism, a progressive organization is out with a poll finding that more than half of likely Democratic voters prefer socialist-aligned figures like Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Zohran Mamdani to establishment politicians like Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jefrries and Nancy Pelosi.
Democratic voters also view elected officials who describe themselves as democratic socialists about as positively as those who identify as Democrats, and they prefer democratic socialism to capitalism when written definitions of each are read aloud to them, according to the poll conducted by Data for Progress and shared first with POLITICO.
“What the mainstream of the party wants is both democratic socialism as a value system and democratic socialist politicians,” said Gabe Tobias, executive director of the Democratic Socialists of America Fund, a political nonprofit organization that funded the survey with the magazine Jacobin and the Berlin-based democratic socialist group Rosa Luxemburg Foundation.
Though Democratic voters are warming to socialism, the ideology is toxic to most Republicans and many independents, making it difficult for socialists to win in battlegrounds. Even within the Democratic Party, some voters are skeptical about the electability of democratic socialists in swing areas, a reality Sanders faced during his two unsuccessful presidential runs.
