 83% of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) programs have been canceled, according to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

In a social media post Monday, Secretary Rubio said after a six-week review, 5,200 contracts have been canceled, and the programs “did not serve, and in some cases, even harmed” the national interests of the United States.

Rubio went on to say the remaining 18%, or about 1,000 contracts, will “now be administered more effectively under the State Department.”

However, Rubio did not provide details about which programs had been cut, and which will remain in place.

He also thanked the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and his staff for the “overdue” reforms.

In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court disparaged Trump’s claim that presidents can do whatever they want, by ordering the administration to disburse $2 billion in USAID grants in compliance with lower court rulings. Although the narrow ruling has been widely applauded as at least a temporary victory for the rule of law, the victory is overshadowed by ominous signaling in the dissent.

In response to a one-paragraph ruling, Justices Alito, Thomas, Kavanaugh and Gorsuch wrote lengthy and strident dissents. Of the four justices, at least two are ethically compromised by their refusals to recuse from cases involving their own billionaire benefactors. Justices Alito and Thomas have also faced credible impeachment demands following their partisan embrace of Trump’s MAGA ethos.

They did not just dissent in the USAID ruling, they dissembled. They lied about both the court record and the district judge, and they drew a map to show Trump how to frustrate the case going forward.

The majority protected the legislature’s role 

The Court’s 5-4 majority opinion, in which Justices John Roberts and Amy Coney Barrett joined the three liberal justices to narrowly protect Congress’ power of the purse, holding that under Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution, since Congress had already appropriated the USAID and it was already signed into law, Trump could not legally freeze it. In other words, a president does not have the power to break, disregard or rewrite laws just because he disagrees with them.

The New Jersey attorney general is facing impeachment, in part, for allegedly targeting pregnancy resource centers for investigation because of their pro-life stance and for demanding the names of their staff and donors in the process.

Republicans in the New Jersey Assembly filed articles of impeachment against Attorney General Matthew Platkin on Thursday. They accused him of targeting “certain organizations based upon the political beliefs of the organization, specifically pro-life pregnancy centers.”

The resolution refers to Platkin targeting First Choice Women’s Resource Centers, which has five locations in the state.

Platkin demanded documents and information from First Choice last year, including the names of staff and the identities of its donors. The attorney general brought the investigation under multiple statutes, but most notably under the Consumer Fraud Act, according to Alliance Defending Freedom legal counsel Gabriella McIntyre.

That is a really good question. If one is worried about transgender people getting a health clinic, shouldn’t we be spending that cash on American transgender people? As for me, I don’t want ANY of my tax dollars paying for transgender anything, not here or in India. But I sure as HELL don’t want it being spent in India!

Regardless, according to the BBC, that cash has now been cut off and the transgender clinic in India is now forced to exist on its own efforts… as it should have been in the first place.

Russia freed a U.S. citizen arrested earlier this month on drug smuggling charges and he has returned to the U.S., according to Russian media reports, his mother, and a U.S. official who spoke with The Associated Press. CBS News learned Tuesday that Kalob Byers, 28, from Ohio, was back in the U.S.

The move appeared to be an effort to ease tension between Moscow and Washington ahead of talks in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, which are expected to focus on the war in Ukraine and the fragile ceasefire between Hamas and Israel in Gaza.

Byers was detained on Feb. 7 at Moscow’s Vnukovo airport after customs officials allegedly found cannabis-laced gummies in his baggage. Byers’ mother, Tonya Shuler, said in a social media post on Saturday that Byers was “now in American custody and at the US embassy waiting for his flight home” from Russia.

According to Shuler’s Facebook post and the Russian media reports, Byers had traveled from Istanbul with his Russian fiancee, who was also detained. The authorities said he had attempted to smuggle a “significant amount” of drugs into the country and put him in custody on the charges of drug smuggling, punishable by a prison term of up to 10 years.
