A State Department official told the Daily Signal that the department is “trying to fundamentally shift how the Foreign Service works, replacing an expectation of promotion with a merit-based system.” To expand the pool of individuals eligible for merit-based promotions in the Foreign Service, the State Department has downgraded approximately 200 Senior Foreign Service positions overseas.

“We are committed to ensuring that the senior ranks of the Foreign Service are populated by the people who are best equipped to advance American interests, rather than simply those who have accumulated the most years of service,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott told the Daily Signal.

“That means rewarding performance, leadership, and results while giving talented officers the opportunity to take on greater responsibility based on merit. The result may be fewer promotions at certain levels, but the objective is clear: a stronger, more capable leadership corps serving the American people,” Pigott continued.

The Foreign Service employs roughly 14,000 officers overseas working in U.S. embassies representing America. Prior to this reclassification, Foreign Service Officers were promoted to leadership positions on a relatively predictable timeline, even if they weren’t the right fit for a leadership role.

After trade negotiations with Canada collapsed this week, and President Donald Trump announced a whopping 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods — including Canadian whiskey and hockey sticks — it’s no surprise our friends to the north are less than pleased with their downstairs neighbors.

In our defense, not all of us are responsible for electing the bully and thug in question — and if polls are any indication, most Americans agree with Canada that Trump is doing a terrible job. But still, it’s hard to hear.

The law in question bans local police from entering into or continuing their cooperation agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Hochul’s statewide ban on the 287(g) cooperation agreements took effect Tuesday, forcing Blakeman to abide by the new law.

She said the law will help protect immigrants from aggressive enforcement while they pursue asylum claims.

What a bunch of nonsense. This is nothing more than an effort to vilify federal agents, while turning a blind eye to criminal aliens who have disregarded this country’s laws from the very start.

Back in July, state officials sent letters to 12 local law enforcement agencies that have agreements with ICE. The letters stated that they must unwind the agreements by Aug. 25.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has blasted Boston’s far-left Democrat Mayor Michelle Wu as “unhinged” after her administration sought information identifying private businesses and property owners that could provide parking to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The confrontation erupted after Boston barred ICE from using city-owned parking lots to stage immigration enforcement operations.

ICE responded by looking to the private sector, issuing a notice seeking 249 contiguous parking spaces in Boston as part of a wider search for “surge parking” across 14 U.S. cities.

Wu then urged private garage and parking lot owners to reject ICE while revealing that Boston had submitted a Freedom of Information Act request seeking “any local responses to ICE.”

DHS accused the mayor of attempting to intimidate private property owners because she lacks the authority to stop them from voluntarily doing business with federal law enforcement.

The U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on some Canadian products on Saturday after trade talks between the two countries fell apart on Friday.

In response, Canada said it would impose its own retaliatory tariffs beginning on Sept. 8.

Negotiators for both sides had been working on a deal all week, at times signaling that an agreement was near. President Donald Trump had postponed the original deadline of Wednesday just hours ahead of it being imposed, saying that there was a soon-to-be finalized deal. Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s trade minister for the U.S., told reporters on Thursday that a deal was “very close.”

However, both sides blamed the other for not reaching a deal as the tariffs, impacting roughly $20 billion in Canadian exports, including wine, furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing, fishing rods, hockey equipment, went into effect on Saturday morning.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, in a post on X early Saturday morning, that “Canada declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement released on Friday that despite working toward a deal, “that progress has not been enough to meet our objectives for Canadians,” saying that “last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal.”

ICE officers working in Los Angeles are being followed home, harassed on social media and confronted in person while carrying out immigration enforcement, the agency’s local field office director said this week.

Those officers receive little assistance from local police.

LAPD policy, rooted in Special Order 40 and the city’s sanctuary ordinance, bars officers from initiating action solely to determine immigration status or assisting in civil immigration enforcement, according to a statement from Chief Jim McDonnell.

Los Angeles ICE Field Office Director Thomas Giles told Fox News Digital that the sanctuary rules force his agents into the community instead of allowing secure transfers at local jails. Fox News Digital accompanied Giles and a team of officers on an enforcement operation in the Los Angeles area early last Thursday morning.

“The sanctuary policies definitely impact our operations in terms of it’d be a lot easier for us to have that transfer of custody in a secure environment,” Giles said. “So, what it does for us is it sends our officers out into the community, putting our officers at risk and other community members at risk.”

Luis Manuel Aviles Roa was arrested in Key West, Florida, during a traffic stop, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Roa, who is originally from Nicaragua, was carrying his driver’s license, Social Security card, and work permit at the time of his arrest, according to his son, Joshua Aviles.

“I’ve been deployed for over nine months, out at sea in the Middle East aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, fighting for a country that has given me everything,” Aviles wrote on social media.

Aviles described learning of his father’s detention as “heartbreaking.”

“I just got a call that my dad was taken by ICE,” he wrote. “We have done everything through immigration to get his green card approved, and we are just waiting. This is heartbreaking for me. I don’t know how I can mentally continue working 12+ hour day[s].”

DHS, however, said Roa had entered the United States illegally and would remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.

“Having a family member in the military is not a free pass to violate our nation’s laws,” DHS said.

The detention comes as the USS Abraham Lincoln has spent nearly nine months deployed in the Middle East, where it has supported U.S. operations during the war with Iran.
