A new poll released Wednesday shows Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton with a commanding lead over incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in either a two-person race or a three-person race in next year’s Republican primary. But Paxton’s lead in the poll shrinks dramatically against potential Democratic rivals in the 2026 general election.

The poll from Texan Southern University’s Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center shows Paxton leading Cornyn by 9 percentage points in a two-person race and by 7 points if U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt of Houston enters the primary.

“Right now, if it’s a head-to-head race between Paxton and Cornyn, Paxton is a very strong favorite, and it’s tough to see how, absent, say, a Trump endorsement of Cornyn, Cornyn could effectively flip the table on Paxton,” said Mark Jones, political science fellow at Rice University’s Baker Institute and co-author of the survey with TSU’s Michael O. Two years after Gallup said that more Americans identified as Republicans than Democrats for the first time in over three decades, the trend has expanded as the GOP has won over more support from Hispanic and black voters.

The one-point edge Gallup discovered in January 2023 has grown to five points in a new Napolitan News survey of 9,300 registered voters.

In that survey shared with Secrets, 46% said that they considered themselves Republicans or leaned Republican, while 41% considered themselves Democrats or leaned Democrat.

In the Gallup survey of 10,000 adults, 45% identified as Republicans and 44% as Democrats.

If anyone isn’t sure whether Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar is thwarting efforts to clean up Nevada’s dirty voter rolls, his new bill, AB 534, removes all doubt.

There are two ways for citizens to challenge the eligibility of a voter who has moved from the residence where they are registered to vote — known as “Section 535” and “Section 547.”

Last year, our group, the Pigpen Project, filed thousands of challenges using both sections. In response, Aguilar’s office claimed challenges like ours lacked “personal knowledge” that the voter had moved.

If the post office’s National Change of Address (NCOA) database shows that a voter has permanently moved, Aguilar has declared that such information gleaned from this official government database doesn’t equate to “personal knowledge.” But “personal knowledge” is not defined in the Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS), only in the secretary of state’s implementing regulations. It’s only his opinion. Besides, Section 535 only requires challengers to attest “that he or she has personal knowledge of the facts set forth in the affidavit” (emphasis added).
