Xavier Becerra’s ‘Son of Immigrants’ Myth Finally Meets the Facts– legalinsurrection.com

EXCERPT:

For years, a Democrat-friendly press corps helped turn California gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra’s “son of immigrants” biography into an iconic political legend, often repeating that he was the “son of immigrants” without providing all the facts.

In fact, his mother immigrated from Jalisco, but his father was born in Sacramento, raised in Tijuana, and later returned to California.

Becerra, who often touts his Mexican American family’s immigrant background on the campaign trail, caught heat from conservative critics in recent days for labeling his late father Manuel Guerrero Becerra an “immigrant” — despite the fact he was born in Sacramento.

The apparent inconsistency was boosted by accounts on X and by rival Steve Hilton, who blasted the former Health and Human Services secretary as a “smug, arrogant, machine politician” and suggested he’s fudged his family history.

Unlike Xavier Becerra, I am an immigrant. Unlike Xavier Becerra, my father was an immigrant. My stepfather too. My whole family,” Hilton wrote.

Hilton was born in London, becoming an American citizen in 2021. His parents were born in Hungary.

A Black Texas Democratic Party vice chair was caught on an undercover audio recording describing concerns about James Talarico, her party’s Senate candidate, and his disregard for the needs and contributions of Black Americans.

Texas Democratic Party Vice Chair for Voter Engagement Sheena Flanary was secretly recorded by an undercover interviewer discussing Talarico winning his party’s nomination by beating out Black U.S. Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas). A video containing the audio was reportedly created on September 7, 2026.

In the recording exclusively obtained by The Dallas Express, an undercover interviewer (identified only as “Friend/Assistant Jasmine Crockett for U.S. Senate Campaign”) begins by saying that he feels that Crockett lost because “they chose this White guy.”

“Yeah,” Flanary agreed and then confirmed when she was asked again.

“The way it was done, just felt really like intentionally racist and sexist,” the undercover interviewer said. Flanary concurred.

The Black Democrat Vice Chair then explained how she had been disrespected and rejected by the Talarico campaign each time she offered her support:

  • “I was kind of rebuffed” by the Talarico campaign.
  • “He didn’t even want our money” when my husband and I offered to fundraise for his campaign.
  • Talarico campaign’s response to our outreach “wasn’t receptive and reciprocated.”
  • Interactions with Talarico campaign left “a bad taste in my mouth.”

There are 29 days until the midterms, and Republicans’ chances of holding their congressional majorities have gone from bad to worse.

Democrats’ lead on the generic ballot has continued to grow, now sitting at 8.9% according to analyst Nate Silver—a crushing blow to GOP operatives who expected polling to tighten in the home stretch.

President Donald Trump speaks beside Ohio’s GOP gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy during a rally on Oct. 3 in Ohio.AP

Meanwhile, The New York Times released a spate of surveys over the weekend showing Democrats winning Senate contests in Alaska, Ohio, and Texas, a tie in Kansas, and Republicans up by just 1 point in Iowa. If that holds, Democrats would win control of the Senate, as North Carolina is also slated to flip.

And Gallup released its quarterly party affiliation data Monday, revealing that 50% of the country identifies with or leans Democratic, while just 39% identifies as or leans Republican.

That 11-point spread is even larger than the 10-point lead Democrats held in the same survey in 2006, a midterm election cycle when the party rode a massive wave of discontent with then-President George W. Bush to flip both chambers of Congress.

And it’s just 1 point shy of the lead Democrats held in 2008, when voters furious with Bush’s Iraq War and his crashing economy created a blue tsunami that gave Democrats 257 House seats and a supermajority in the Senate.

What The Midterms Mean For Trump’s Effort To Restore Census– thefederalist.com
News Source
EXCERPT:

Illegal aliens cannot legally vote in federal elections, but their presence in the country still helps determine how much power Democrats and Republicans have in Washington. By counting them when allocating congressional seats and electoral votes, the federal government allows illegal aliens to fundamentally shape Congress and, as a result, our laws. But President Donald Trump is locked in a fight to keep illegal aliens out of the census count, and the upcoming midterms represent an important crossroads in that fight.

The Trump administration proposed in September that the process for calculating the census must exclude noncitizens. The rule would remove illegal aliens due to their “lack of sufficient tie and allegiance to the United States.”

Noncitizens — and illegal aliens — don’t get to vote in federal elections, since that’s a right of citizens only. And yet they significantly impact elections through apportionment and the electoral college. Every decade the Census Bureau will calculate how many congressional seats a state gets as well as how many electoral votes the state gets based on its population. The population has included illegal aliens — a benefit for Democrats, according to RealClearPolitics.

Had the Census Bureau excluded the estimated 18.6 million illegal aliens from the census in 2020, it would have shifted “eight House seats, mostly from blue to red and purple states.”

“Removing all 41 million non-citizens would shift a stunning 22 seats the same way,” Hayden Ludwig wrote for RealClearPolitics. “In either case, these are districts that should represent U.S. citizens; instead, they’re brimming with non-citizens, and Democratic Party politicians prefer it this way.”

Jackson responded to the question by announcing his unequivocal opposition to any forms of voter ID. “No, as a working logger, many times I went to the polls without my ID. No,” Jackson responded.

Collins’ answer was almost the exact opposite of her opponent’s. “Yes, only Americans should vote in American elections. I don’t think that’s too much to ask when you go to register to vote,” the senator said.

Former President Barack Obama will campaign in Detroit with Michigan Democrats later this month, giving the party a high-profile boost ahead of the start of the state’s early voting period.

Obama is set to join Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson and other candidates on Oct. 24, the state party announced Monday.

“It is my honor and privilege to announce that President @BarackObama is joining us on the trail in Detroit on Saturday, October 24,” El-Sayed wrote on social media. “Get. Ready.”

The event comes 10 days before Election Day, with Democrats defending an open Senate seat and the governor’s office.

El-Sayed faces Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers in the race to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters. Benson, Michigan’s secretary of state, faces Republican Rep. John James in the open governor’s race.

Since leaving the White House, Obama has remained one of the party’s most popular figures, both nationally and among the party grassroots. He has campaigned in past cycles, but he’s made few public stops on the trail this year.

He previously campaigned in Texas with Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico and gubernatorial nominee Gina Hinojosa, and appeared in a campaign ad with Iowa Senate nominee Josh Turek.

The former president is also set to headline a Washington-area fundraiser Wednesday for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, his first with the party’s Senate campaign arm this election cycle.

James Talarico Refused to Support Bill to Stop Infanticide– www.lifenews.com

EXCERPT:

Texas Senate candidate James Talarico refused to support a 2019 Texas bill that would stop infanticide.

He refused to vote for legislation that required doctors to give life-saving medical care to infants born alive after an abortion, a measure pro-life lawmakers said was necessary to stop infanticide.

Talarico, then representing Round Rock and now the Democrat nominee for U.S. Senate, recorded his vote as “present, not voting” on House Bill 16, the Texas Born-Alive Infant Protection Act. He did not vote yes to mandate that physicians treat a child who survives an abortion the same way they would treat any other infant born at the same gestational age.

Texas Right to Life gave Talarico a 0 percent pro-life score for the 86th Legislative Session. The group cited his present-not-voting stance on the born-alive bill and his opposition to expanding the state’s Alternatives to Abortion program.

The born-alive bill, authored by Rep. Jeff Leach, R-Plano, created criminal and civil penalties for doctors who withhold appropriate care. A physician who failed to act after a failed abortion could face a third-degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in prison and a civil fine of at least $100,000. Gov. Greg Abbott signed the measure, and it took effect Sept. 1, 2019.

Chuck Schumer projects confidence as GOP money washes over Senate Democrats– www.politico.com

EXCERPT:

A tidal wave of Republican money is threatening to soak Democrats in the final stretch of the midterm campaign, and Chuck Schumer has a message for his party: Keep your sheets dry.

While the Senate minority leader warned in an interview Wednesday that they shouldn’t be “overconfident,” he painted a rosy picture where Democrats have the “wind in our sails” and are well positioned to overcome an “almost obscene” GOP funding advantage.

“Here’s how I’d sum up the election: Can enormous amounts of Republican money beat a Democratic enormous advantage in much better candidates and a much better political climate?” Schumer asked in his Capitol Hill office. “I think we win.”

Those assurances are emblematic of the rising confidence many Senate Democrats are now expressing as they prepare to leave for a seven-week recess. After months where a tough GOP-tilted map and a series of nasty primary battles cast a shadow over their battle to retake the majority, some are more openly acknowledging they could return to Washington as victors.

“It certainly feels like it’s going to be a wave election, and not for good reasons,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said in an interview. “This president’s domestic and foreign policy has gone off the rails. People are paying more than ever before for basic necessities like gasoline, and we have the most corrupt White House in the history of the country. So that’s where we are.”

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said he was “increasingly hopeful,” while Sen. Ben Ray Lujan (D-N.M.) said Democrats are “in a position to earn the trust of voters across the country, win majorities in both the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate.”

Schumer, like most Senate Democrats, is being careful not to predict outright they will flip the chamber. They need to win four seats on net, including several that President Donald Trump won at least once.

The Minnesota Senate race between Republican Michele Tafoya and Democrat Peggy Flanagan remains a closely contested battle. Multiple consecutive polls have shown the candidates just points apart from each other, within the margin of error.

A recent InsiderAdvantage poll of 1,200 likely voters conducted September 28-29 found Flanagan leading Tafoya 46 percent to 45 percent, a one-point difference within the poll’s 2.95 percentage-point margin of error.

“This survey is unusual in that it goes against many of the trends we are seeing in other Senate contests. It appears that the decrease in popularity of Governor Tim Walz, combined with the growing evidence of fraud in the state are taking a toll on the DFL nominee,”  InsiderAdvantage pollster Matt Towery said in a memo about the poll.

“Tafoya does extremely well with men and Flanagan is losing every age group other than the youngest of voters, who in the poll have a significant ‘enthusiasm about voting’ gap versus other age groups who are more enthusiastic,” Towery added.

GOP sees 5 once-competitive House races as ‘all but lost’– www.dailykos.com

With 34 days until the midterms, Republican strategists see at least five U.S. House seats are a lost cause for their party as President Donald Trump’s abysmal approval rating threatens to drag the GOP into the political abyss.

Punchbowl News reported that Republicans are broadly resigned to losses in California’s 48th District, Iowa’s 1st District, Nebraska’s 2nd District, New Jersey’s 7th District, and Pennsylvania’s 7th District—all GOP-held seats that in a neutral environment would be highly competitive.

“Nearly every senior Republican and Democrat involved in 2026 believes these five R seats are all but lost,” Punchbowl News co-founder Jake Sherman wrote in a post on X.

Three of those contests (CA-48, NE-02, and NJ-07) are currently rated as “Lean Democratic” races by the Cook Political Report, while Iowa’s 1st and Pennsylvania’s 7th are still in the “toss-up” category. Given that even Republicans say they are the underdogs in these seats, it suggests that the political handicapping organizations are slower to react to the electoral landscape and thus their current ratings may not reflect the true peril the GOP is in.

What’s more, Punchbowl reported that a handful of other districts are also close to being cooked. They include:

Punchbowl said these seats “are growing more difficult for Republicans but still within reach.” It’s why even the typically gun-shy race-rating groups have declared that it’s “almost impossible” for Republicans to keep control of the House.

Poll: Trump’s Approval Rating Drops to New Low as Midterms Loom– www.breitbart.com

EXCERPT:

President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to a new low in another poll as the midterms are just weeks away.

Surveying 1,277 likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points, the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll found that the president’s overall approval stands at 32 percent. Even among Republicans, the president’s approval saw a significant drop in the week from 82 percent to 73 percent — a drop from 86 percent in January of this year and 91 percent following the inauguration in January 2025.

The president’s approval among Republicans has been steadily declining since the Iran conflict began, with recent polling showing a drop among his base even on economic issues. Since January, Republican support for Trump’s handling of the economy has dropped to 56 percent while Republican support for his handling of the cost of living has dropped to 44 percent.

“For really his entire political career, the president has enjoyed very strong support among the Republican Party and among his base, and that’s still true today, but it’s a bit less true,” Alec Tyson, senior vice president and lead pollster at Ipsos Public Affairs, told the Hill.

“Those are striking numbers,” Tyson added, “Numbers that we hadn’t seen until recent weeks here in our Ipsos polling.”

Approval ratings for the president as the midterms loom have ranged from as high as 39 percent to as low as 29 percent. According to Fox News, Republican performance in the coming midterms will hinge on several factors, most specifically inflation and base enthusiasm:

Democrats last week heavily criticized Trump and Republicans after the president argued that fuel costs were “a very inexpensive price to pay for what we’ve done,” as he pointed to the attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Meanwhile, the latest Fox News poll indicated that by a wide margin, the Democrats are considered the party that would better handle inflation.

But when asked about the overall economy, recent national surveys from Reuters/Ipsos and NBC News had the GOP and Democrats all knotted up on which party would better handle the issue.

The Supreme Court of the United States shut down the 2025 map for the Missouri midterm election, reinstating the 2022 map that preserves the Democrat-favored U.S. House District.

The unsigned order simply declared “At this late date, ordering reversion to the 2025 map in the midst of an ongoing election would usher in electoral chaos.” It should be noted that the primaries were based on the 2025 election map, giving doubt to SCOTUS’ ‘chaos’ claim as the basis for their ruling.

Peltola, who is Yup’ik and grew up fishing on the Kuskokwim River, has revived her longtime “Fish, Family, Freedom” slogan from her House campaigns and is calling for a ban on factory trawling.

“I’m the only candidate on this stage who’s an Alaskan fisherman. Fish is in my blood, earned over generations on the water,” Peltola said at a Sept. 12 fisheries debate hosted by the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce, the Alaska Beacon reported.

The Peltola and Sullivan campaigns and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s requests for comment.

The fight centers on bycatch — the salmon, halibut and crab swept up in the nets of large trawlers harvesting pollock and other groundfish in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska — which many Alaskans blame, at least in part, for weak salmon runs and declining halibut and crab stocks, the outlet reported.

The race could help decide which party controls the Senate, Gunnar Knapp, a retired University of Alaska Anchorage economist, told the Beacon.

Brett Watson, an economist at the University of Alaska Anchorage, told the outlet he could not recall fishing issues playing “such a central role in a statewide or federal campaign.”

Undercover video obtained exclusively by Townhall shows Rigby musing about his economic philosophy — a philosophy that has undoubtedly been impressed upon Talarico for virtually the candidate’s entire life.

Rigby asserts the United States is the only developed nation “that doesn’t have that stuff. And they’re calling that communism.”

“So, to me, just stop looking at the label and what is it that you want?” he continues in the video.

“Gandhi and Martin Luther King were democratic socialists. That’s the next chapter, and it’s not this horrific thing. It’s like, that’s what the rest of the civilized world calls sanity.”

Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania said Saturday that it’s “entirely possible” his party could win control of the Senate in the midterm elections, but he also left the door open on his own political future.

“Let’s revisit after the midterm,” Fetterman told CBS News’ Major Garrett at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin.

Democrats faced an uphill battle heading into the midterm cycle as they sought control the upper chamber, with 53 Republicans currently in the Senate and a map that appeared more favorable to the GOP. But as affordability issues have persisted in the Trump administration and amid the unpopular war with Iran, the picture has appeared to improve for Democrats as they aim to secure a majority in the Senate.

Fetterman, who delivered Democrats a crucial victory in a closely watched race in 2022, has been under scrutiny in recent years for breaking with his party, spurring questions about his future. Asked whether he would leave the Democratic Party, Fetterman said Saturday that he doesn’t “have a reason to.” And he emphasized, “I am not a Republican.” But he cautioned that people should wait until the midterm elections to “see what I do.”

“Let’s see what happens if I happen to be 51 — I don’t know,” Fetterman said.

AOC is getting major pushback from swing-state Democrats in the run-up to the 2026 midterm elections.

Their message? Please, just stay away.

Axios unleashed the nasty news and blasted it into the ether on Sunday night.

Democrats in some of this year’s most critical congressional battlegrounds are sending a clear message to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: We don’t want you to campaign for us.

Why it matters: If they continue, the snubs could hurt AOC’s standing as a potential contender in the 2028 Democratic presidential primary, when many voters will prioritize electability.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is currently testing the waters for a potential Senate bid, so this is not a great sign that she has enough mainstream appeal for the “big leagues.”

Axios reports that Democrats in some of the most important battleground races this fall are shunning Ocasio-Cortez, with party officials saying some candidates have explicitly asked her team to stay away. One senior Democrat strategist working in a key swing district was especially blunt.

“The polling is atrocious for her,” the strategist told Axios. “She’s a lightning rod.”

Here is the background Axios gave on the recent developments:

•  Ocasio-Cortez and her allies argue that her unapologetic advocacy for big progressive policies like Medicare for All would make candidates like her more electable than moderate liberals, but many Democrats in tight races this fall have disagreed.

•  She was welcomed by many Democrats in competitive primary races, but some of those candidates have distanced themselves as they’ve moved to the center to take on Republicans in the Nov. 3 election.

Democratic socialist versus MAGA Republican—it’s a war of two extremes equally likely to turn off voters, right?

Not remotely, the data suggests. And that may have big implications this year.

The latest YouGov/Economist poll ran an experiment that asked voters to pick between pairs of hypothetical candidates. When asked to choose between a “Democratic socialist who supports Medicare for All, ending military aid to Israel, and abolishing ICE” and a “MAGA Republican who supports mass deportations and always votes with Trump,” 51% of registered voters went for the socialist, while only 34% picked the MAGA Republican. The remaining 15% were unsure.

Notably, this figure did not change much when the hypothetical socialist candidate was swapped for a “Liberal Democrat who wants to protect Obamacare (ACA), increase support for child care and housing, and opposes tariffs.” Fifty-five percent backed the liberal Democrat, and an identical 34% supported the MAGA Republican.

Federal agents swarming polling places. Voters intimidated or blocked from casting their ballots. A tyrannical president using his powers, real and imagined, to undermine or try to overturn the Nov. 3 election.

“With this administration what we have seen is it’s important that we not limit our imagination to what … type of harm could happen,” Weiser said during a sunny noon hour in the Mile High City.

For that reason, Colorado’s attorney general and his Democratic peers around the country have spent more than a year strategizing — by phone, via Zoom, sometimes in person — on ways to Trump-proof the midterm election.

They’ve researched history and the law, war-gamed what-ifs, divvied up responsibilities and drafted emergency lawsuits and temporary restraining orders so they can be hurried into court at a moment’s notice.
