WTO downgrades global trade growth forecast to 0.5% for next year– www.channelnewsasia.com

Excerpt:
GENEVA: The World Trade Organization sharply lowered its 2026 forecast for global merchandise trade volume growth to 0.5 per cent on Tuesday (Oct 7), citing expected delayed impacts from US President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
It marks a significant revision down from its previous estimate in August of 1.8 per cent growth.
“The outlook for next year is bleaker … I am very concerned,” Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala told reporters in Geneva.
However, she said the world trading system is showing resilience, with the rules-based multilateral system providing some stability amid trade turmoil.
For 2025, the WTO upgraded its forecast for global trade volume growth to 2.4 per cent, from 0.9 per cent previously, driven primarily by the front-loading of imports into the United States ahead of tariff hikes and growth in the trade of AI-related goods. It is still below the 2.8 per cent growth seen in 2024.
Trump’s tariff decisions since he took office in January have shocked financial markets and sent a wave of uncertainty through the global economy.
On Aug 7, Trump imposed higher tariffs on imports from dozens of countries, leaving major trade partners like Switzerland, Brazil and India scrambling for a better deal, while the EU struck a deal that set duties at 15 per cent on most EU goods imported into the United States.

At President Donald Trump’s request, the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to review Hawaii’s gun law that restricts people from carrying a firearm on private property unless the owner specifically allows it.
The Trump administration encouraged the high court to rule on the Hawaii law in light of its 2022 ruling that expanded Second Amendment protections broadly.
Three Hawaii residents sued the state’s Democrat attorney general, Anne E. Lopez, and the lower courts split on the decision.
The district court blocked the law, but the appeals court reversed the decision.

But if absence makes the heart grow fonder, does presence make the heart grow weary?

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau are amongst 171 flotilla activists deported by Israel to Greece and Slovakia on Monday after a failed bid to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza last week.
The activists were detained by Israel in an operation which started last Wednesday night after its navy intercepted 44 civilain boats carrying a symbolic amount of aid to Gaza.
The flotilla’s goal had been to break Israel’s long-standing blockade of the Strip and to bring crucial aid into the war-ravaged enclave.
“The deportees are citizens of Greece, Italy, France, Ireland, Sweden, Poland, Germany, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Austria, Luxembourg, Finland, Denmark, Slovakia, Switzerland, Norway, the UK, Serbia, and the United States,” Israel’s Foreign Ministry wrote on X, attaching photograhs of the released activists in white T-shirts and grey sweatpants.
Several activists were already released over the weekend by Israel to Turkey, Spain and Italy. They spoke to reporters about the harsh conditions Thunberg and other prisoners were subjected to. Earlier, Swiss and Spanish activists said they were subject to inhumane conditions.
“We were detained in a maximum security prison where there was no rule of law, they didn’t respect any of our rights,” former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau claimed.

FIRST ON FOX: A diplomatic battle is being waged between leading Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and Nigerian government officials. The Texas senator has warned he will hold them accountable for the reported “mass slaughter” of tens of thousands of Christians in Nigeria. The officials say Cruz is lying, with one claiming that despite even the pope publicly calling out the killings, there is religious harmony in the country.
Nigeria is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a Christian, according to international Christian advocacy group Open Doors International’s 2025 World Watch List (WWL). An estimated 48% of the population is Christian. But of the 4,476 Christians reported killed worldwide in WWL’s latest reporting period, 3,100 – 69% – were in Nigeria.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act, which he said would target officials “with powerful sanctions and other tools.”

White House Notches Significant Court Victory On ‘Sanctuary City’ Funding– trendingpoliticsnews.com

A federal judge in Massachusetts denied a request for an injunction sought by two “sanctuary cities” in the state — Chelsea and Somerville — that sought to bar the Trump Administration from withholding federal funds due to their support for illegal aliens.
Somerville and Chelsea had requested a preliminary injunction in June, arguing that the targeting of cities and towns over their “sanctuary” policies — which openly defy federal immigration law by barring local authorities from working with immigration agents — is unconstitutional and at odds with advice from local law enforcement, according to a report from the Boston Herald.
The cities have also claimed that if the federal government withheld funds while their legal challenges were ongoing, there would be “irreparable harm” to municipal services.
U.S. District Judge Nathaniel Gorton indicated that he was not buying those arguments when he denied the request for an injunction on Friday. In his Judge Gorton noted that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) “has not frozen any particular funding, denied any grant application or withheld any reimbursement from plaintiffs.”
Judge Rules Biden’s Offshore Oil Drilling Ban Illegal– conservativeroof.com

President Joe Biden’s ban on offshore drilling in certain parts of the ocean and the Gulf of America was illegal, a federal judge ruled on Oct. 2.
U.S. District Judge James Cain of Louisiana ruled that both Biden and President Barack Obama went beyond their authority when they banned offshore drilling in parts of the Outer Continental Shelf because the bans were imposed without an expiration date.
Their orders “purported to apply for ‘a period of time without specific expiration,’ i.e., indefinitely,” Cain wrote in a 16-page decision. That “constituted a departure from the executive branch’s longstanding practice” and exceeded the authority outlined in the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, he added. Biden, on Jan. 6, shortly before his term ended, barred oil and gas leasing across 625 million acres of ocean, including the entire East and West coasts.
“My decision reflects what coastal communities, businesses, and beachgoers have known for a long time: that drilling off these coasts could cause irreversible damage to places we hold dear and is unnecessary to meet our nation’s energy needs,” Biden said in a statement at the time. “It is not worth the risks.”
On Jan. 17, several groups and five states sued the government over the action.

The Washington Post has executed a sweeping round of layoffs in its Opinion section, firing more than a dozen employees, including longtime veterans and contractors.
This move comes amid ongoing financial struggles and internal shake-ups at the Jeff Bezos-owned outlet.
According to reports, the layoffs were orchestrated by Adam O’Neal, the newly appointed Opinion Editor, as part of a broader plan to “shake up” the section.
New York Times media reporter Ben Mullin broke the story on X, stating: “Scoop: Adam O’Neal, the new Opinion Editor at The Washington Post, is laying off staffers as part of a plan to shake up the section. A source says six employees are affected. I’ve also been told some contractors are being terminated.”
Mullin shared an internal email from O’Neal outlining the changes, which emphasized streamlining operations but offered little insight into the financial motivations behind the cuts.

The U.S. Justice Department is opening an investigation into the Portland Police Bureau’s “questionable” practice surrounding weeks of sustained attacks and violent rioting targeting federal buildings and agents in the city.
The news was announced just hours after conservative journalist Nick Sortor was arrested by Portland Police after he was surrounded by a mob of far-left rioters, some of whom damaged his equipment and ultimately assaulted him. Despite the circumstances of the attack, Sortor was taken into custody and charged with disorderly conduct.
Just a day before, on-the-ground reporter Katie Daviscourt — who has consistently documented far-left and Antifa violence in Portland, Seattle and other cities — was assaulted with a metal poll. The incident was captured on camera, though the perpetrator was not arrested despite the fact that an officer was standing just feet away.
The Portland Police Bureau confirmed that one of its “dialogue liaison officers,” sworn officers tasked with “hold[ing] a safe space” for protesters, lost track of the suspect. The DLO followed the woman, who was described as a white female with a large septum nose piercing wearing a black mask and carrying a backpack, trying to talk to her to “hear her side of the story,” according to a news release from the department.

J.B. Pritzker Cries “Trump’s Invasion”, Gavin Newsom Warns “America Is on the Brink of Martial Law”, After President Trump Orders Texas National Guard Troops to Chicago and Portland | The Gateway Pundit– www.thegatewaypundit.com

President Donald Trump on Sunday ordered the deployment of four hundred Texas National Guard troops, with the consent of Gov. Greg Abbott (R), to Illinois and Oregon to protect ICE agents and federal facilities under violent siege by Antifa and other leftist terrorists in Chicago and Portland.
The orders federalize about 2,000 Texas National Guard under Northern Command, authorizing their deployment to “Illinois, Oregon and other locations throughout the United States,” with an initial deployment of 400 troops to Portland and Chicago.
The move follows Trump ordering California National Guard troops to Portland after a federal judge on Saturday blocked Trump from deploying the Oregon National Guard. Oregon, California and Portland went to court Sunday night to fight the new California orders.
California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) flipped out earlier Sunday when he learned Trump, who had already federalized the state guard to protect Los Angeles in June, sent California National Guard troops to Portland, calling the orders “appalling” and “un-American.”

California’s Vague ‘Hate Speech’ Bill Would Censor Conservatives– thefederalist.com

California lawmakers are once again leading the charge — not toward progress, but toward repression. Their latest move, Senate Bill 771 (SB-771), is being packaged as a bold stand against “hate” on social media. In reality, it’s a direct assault on the free expression and constitutionally protected speech of ministries, minority groups, and faith-based organizations.
The bill would force Big Tech to remove content that could be interpreted as “harassment” or “intimidation” based on race, gender identity, sexual orientation, and more — or face financially devastating lawsuits.
If Gov. Gavin Newsom signs this bill into law as expected, it will become one of the most dangerous speech-restricting laws in the country. Cloaked in the language of civil rights, SB-771 is built to punish dissent from progressive orthodoxy.
The target is anyone who dares to speak publicly about values or perspectives that conflict with the state’s ever-expanding list of protected identities. In practice, this means community groups sharing discussions on traditional family structures, cultural views on gender roles, or advocacy for certain social issues may find themselves silenced — not by law enforcement, but by tech giants eager to avoid legal risk.

UK Government Advances Plan to Mandate Digital ID for All Children– slaynews.com

The British government is quietly pushing through legislation that critics warn will expand cradle-to-grave surveillance, override parental rights, and lay the foundation for a dystopian control grid targeting children.
Branded the “Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill,” the measure is being sold to the public as a way to “safeguard” children and improve welfare.
In reality, the bill aligns seamlessly with the government’s digital ID agenda and globalist goals that have nothing to do with protecting children.
Introduced in December 2024, the legislation has already passed three readings in the House of Commons and is now before the House of Lords.
While marketed as a children’s welfare initiative, it contains sweeping provisions to expand government data collection, force compliance monitoring, and entrench state authority over education and child-rearing.

Newsom to Pull Funding from Schools Who Agree Not to Racially Discriminate Under Trump’s New Plan– www.westernjournal.com

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an ultimatum on Thursday to universities in the state, warning them that entering an agreement with the Trump administration will put them directly at odds with the governor.
After the White House proposed a deal to nine universities promising that compliance with the administration’s agenda could grant them priority treatment in funding decisions, Newsom issued a harsh warning to any “sell-out universities” that might accept it.
The offer in Trump’s “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education” asks schools to stop racially discriminating in admissions and hiring decisions and commit to institutional neutrality and upholding free speech. Newsom said any school that complies with the federal government will “lose billions in state funding” instead.
“If any California University signs this radical agreement, they’ll lose billions in state funding — including Cal Grants — instantly,” Newsom said in a press release. “California will not bankroll schools that sell out their students, professors, researchers, and surrender academic freedom.”

Mathematicians Discover Prime Number Pattern in Fractal Chaos– www.scientificamerican.com
Source Link
Excerpt:
Prime numbers are sometimes called math’s “atoms” because they can be divided by only themselves and 1. For two millennia, mathematicians have wondered if the prime numbers are truly random, or if some unknown pattern underlies their ordering. Recently number theorists have proposed several surprising conjectures on prime patterns—in particular, probabilistic patterns that show up in large groups of the mathematical atoms.
The patterns in the primes trace back to an 1859 hypothesis involving the legendary Riemann zeta function. Mathematician Bernhard Riemann derived a function that counts the number of primes up to a number x. It includes three main ingredients: a smooth estimate, a set of corrective terms coming from the Riemann zeta function, and a small error term.
Much has been written about the Riemann zeta function, but the most important thing to know is that it provides a correction to the smooth estimate. To do so, it takes on a wavy pattern, sometimes raising the count, sometimes lowering it. These corrective oscillations are determined by the locations of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function. In fact, the celebrated Riemann hypothesis claims that all such zeros lie on a “critical line” where the real part equals 1⁄2.

Trump Skirts Controversial Court Order, Deploys National Guard Troops To Portland– trendingpoliticsnews.com

President Donald Trump on Sunday deployed 300 California National Guard personnel to Portland, Oregon, a longtime hotbed of left-wing extremism where violent riots targeting federal buildings and facilities have persisted for months. The move comes after a federal judge in Oregon attempted to block the president from taking federal control of the Oregon national guard in order to deploy 200 troops.
The news was shared by an irate California Governor Gavin Newsom, who lost a court case earlier this year when California Attorney General Rob Bonta attempted to block the president from doing the same with the state’s national guard in order to quell several days of sustained unrest. The California deployment is ongoing at the discretion of War Secretary Pete Hegseth.
“After a federal court blocked his attempt to federalize the Oregon National Guard, Donald Trump is deploying 300 California National Guard personnel into Oregon. They are on their way there now,” Newsom announced in an X post.
The governor added that the state will be challenging the deployment in court, calling it “authoritarian.”

Syria held its first parliamentary election on Sunday, nearly a year after a surprise rebellion toppled longtime President Bashar al-Assad in December.
Security forces were deployed around polling stations nationwide. Electoral college members entered polling booths to fill our their ballots, which were then placed in a sealed box until they were pulled out and counted in front of candidates, journalists and observers from the Syrian bar association.
The election however did not feature a direct vote by Syrian citizens.
The new People’s Assembly features 210 seats, 40 less than under al-Assad. Members of the new assembly will also serve two-and-a-half year terms.
Incumbent President Ahmed al-Sharaa will appoint 70 members to the assembly, the remaining 140 will be voted on by subcommittees, overseen by 11-person Supreme Committees, who were appointed by al-Sharaa.
Officials say this election was not a direct vote as they lacked “reliable census data” after millions of people were displaced by 14-years of brutal civil war.

Ben Johnston, COO of small business lender Kapitus, said US businesses are grappling with tariffs that raise costs on imported goods, potentially making domestic manufacturing more competitive long term. But in the short term, those tariffs risk driving up inflation and disrupting global supply chains, threatening jobs across the manufacturing, wholesale, and retail sectors.
AI is also beginning to displace workers, especially in white-collar jobs. Companies are currently investing heavily in AI technologies that can analyze data and quickly make decisions that once could only be made by humans, Johnston said.
Companies are using AI to gather and analyze data from the web, internal systems, and third parties — tasks once done only by humans — mainly in white-collar roles like analytics and underwriting. And as robotics advance, AI could soon take on physical tasks in blue-collar jobs like driving, factory work, and even home healthcare, Johnston noted.

“We can and should condemn the vandalism of a house of worship without criminalizing speech.”
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has argued that prosecutors drop charges against three Muslims accused of vandalizing a Texas church, arguing the act was political expression protected by the First Amendment.
In 2024, three individuals were charged in connection with graffiti spray-painted on the wall of a non-denominational church in Euless, Texas. The act of vandalism was carried out after the church raised an Israeli flag following Hamas’ October 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel. The phrase “F*** Israel” was painted on the walls of the church along with pro-Palestinian stickers, all of which were captured on the church’s security cameras.
Three suspects, identified as Raqunaq Alam, Asfsheen Khan, and Julia Venzor, were initially charged with felony criminal mischief, but the charges were later increased to a third-degree felony hate crime because they targeted a church.
