Researchers at the Delft University of Technology at the Netherlands have developed a new type of drone called a “neuromorphic drone” that is modelled after animal brains in how it processes data. The initial tests reveal these neuromorphic drones process data 64 times faster than drones using conventional GPUs and use three times less energy to do so.

One of the authors of the study, Jesse Hagenaars, said “The calculations performed by spiking neural networks are much simpler than those in standard deep neural network. Whereas digital spiking neurons only need to add integers, standard neurons have to multiply and add floating point numbers. This makes spiking neural networks quicker and more energy efficient. To understand why, think of how humans also find it much easier to calculate 5 + 8 than to calculate 6.25 x 3.45 + 4.05 x 3.45.”

Researchers at Delft University of Technology have created a drone that can fly autonomously, utilizing neuromorphic image processing and control inspired by the functioning of animal brains. Animal brains process data and consume energy more efficiently than the deep neural networks typically operated on GPUs. Consequently, neuromorphic processors are ideal for small drones, as they eliminate the need for bulky hardware and large batteries.

The results are extraordinary: during flight, the drone’s deep neural network processes data up to 64 times faster and consumes three times less energy than when running on a GPU. Further developments of this technology may enable the leap for drones to become as small, agile, and smart as flying insects or birds. The findings were recently published in Science Robotics.

Researchers in 3 cities in 3 different countries, China, Netherlands, and the United States, achieved a partial quantum entanglement between 3 quantum computers located in the three separate cities. The success of the experiment shows full quantum entanglement is possible in cost-effective ways, but there’s still a long way to go before quantum computers become an everyday part of our lives.

The studies were conducted by three separate research teams who coordinated their efforts to attempt the quantum entanglement.

Three separate research groups have demonstrated quantum entanglement — in which two or more objects are linked so that they contain the same information even if they are far apart — over several kilometres of existing optical fibres in real urban areas. The feat is a key step towards a future quantum internet, a network that could allow information to be exchanged while encoded in quantum states.

Together, the experiments are “the most advanced demonstrations so far” of the technology needed for a quantum internet, says physicist Tracy Northup at the University of Innsbruck in Austria. Each of the three research teams — based in the United States, China and the Netherlands — was able to connect parts of a network using photons in the optical-fibre-friendly infrared part of the spectrum, which is a “major milestone”, says fellow Innsbruck physicist Simon Baier.

A quantum internet could enable any two users to establish almost unbreakable cryptographic keys to protect sensitive information. But full use of entanglement could do much more, such as connecting separate quantum computers into one larger, more powerful machine. The technology could also enable certain types of scientific experiment, for example by creating networks of optical telescopes that have the resolution of a single dish hundreds of kilometres wide.

YouTube has decided to comply to the CCP’s demands to assure a viral video showing Hong Kong Freedom Activists singing a patriotic song “Glory to Hong Kong” is blocked from their platform.

While YouTube complied with the CCP’s demands, it offered a mild protest, stating “We are disappointed by the Court’s decision but are complying with its removal order. We’ll continue to consider our options for an appeal, to promote access to information.”

Facebook’s referral traffic for major news publishers down by 50%

Chartbeat and Similarweb reveal significant decline in referral traffic from prominent media outlets worldwide

Major internet analytics firms claimed that the data showed Facebook’s referral traffic for major news publishers was down by 50% in 12 months, according to a report published in Press Gazette.

According to the report, Google’s first core algorithm update of 2024 did not favour the vast majority of publishers, as hundreds of news media groups experienced a gradual decline in referral traffic, even up to 50%.

News publisher analytics firm Chartbeat and digital intelligence platform Similarweb tracked some 792 news and media websites. Chartbeat reported that referrals from social media platforms, particularly Facebook, have witnessed a steep decline. Over the past six years, there’s been a staggering 58% plunge in referrals to news sites, dropping from a whopping 1.3 billion in March 2018 to just 561 million last month.

According to the American Medical Association (AMA), almost 90 percent of American adults suffer from a newly defined heart disease called Cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic (CKM) syndrome. An explanation for why the new definition was issued and how 90 percent of Americans suffer from it was not forthcoming.

Health experts are redefining cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, prevention and management, according to a new American Heart Association presidential advisory published today in the Association’s flagship journal Circulation…

The risks are greatest among older adults, men, and Black individuals, the report, which was published in JAMA Wednesday, found.

The American Heart Association (AHA) introduced a new staging system in 2023 — called CKM syndrome — to better treat and manage cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic diseases, since they are deeply connected and often require a multidisciplinary approach.

The US announced new levies on $18 billion worth of Chinese imports, largely in the clean energy space, including a 100 percent tax on Chinese electric vehicles imported into the country. The move had been expected, with news reports indicating such an announcement was likely this week.

The tax on EVs was raised four-fold to 100 percent from 25 percent, while rates on Chinese solar cells were bumped up to 50 percent from 25 percent. Tariffs on some steel and aluminum imports will increase more than three-fold to up to 25 percent this year. The tariff on lithium-ion batteries for EVs and lithium batteries meant for other uses was also tripled. Other items on which the US ramped up tariffs are medical needles and syringes, ship-to-shore cranes, rubber medical gloves and face masks.

The US said the new tax levies were necessary to protect American industries from unfair competition. A senior official was quoted as telling journalists on a call that “China is producing at a rate and with a trajectory that’s far in excess of any plausible estimate of global demand,” adding: “That is going to flood the global market with supply that undercuts our ability to build productive capacity at home and … leaves all of us across the world more vulnerable to economic coercion.”

On Tuesday at Google I/O, Google‘s much relied-upon — but rarely loved — Google Workspace software suite got a major injection of additional AI features that are coming soon.

Gemini 1.5 Pro, from the language model family formerly known as Bard, is being plastered into the side panel in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides — not to mention Drive and Gmail. These applications are already interconnected, but this slate of features aims to automate those connections via a chirpy AI-powered assistant with the power to — in theory — teleport from app to app, doing work tasks that used to be labor-intensive. 

Google is clearly envisioning a more seamless and integrated experience across Workspace, enabled by the centralization of all the user’s documents and data. With Gemini functionality perpetually available on the screen, users are being encouraged to ask the bot quotidian questions or request little favors. While in Docs, Gemini can dig up details found in emails, or organize lists into spreadsheets automatically.

Users also aren’t required to specify exactly which applications they expect Gemini to use to perform the functions in question. In the demo, a user simply asks the AI assistant to help them organize, and it invents a system in which it will place files in a new folder, and organize the data from said files into a spreadsheet.

If you’re excited by the prospect of an AI-assisted workflow, it’s worth pausing for a moment to consider data security. Last year, a New York Times report notes, there was a great deal of internal discussion at Google when the company attempted to rework its privacy agreement to begin mining users’ publicly available Google Docs for AI training data. Google can now use such data according to its user agreement, but only chooses to incorporate data from users who opt into experimental Google features, the Times reported. 

It’s also worth noting that we’ve only seen a demo so far. AI assistants have, thus far, been buggy, lying robots, seemingly rushed to the market way too quickly. With OpenAI nipping at Google’s heels, Google’s new AI-enabled glow-up for Workspace can’t just be on trend. As the name implies, it has to work.

The EU’s new rules, called the Digital Identity Regulation (eIADAS 2.0) are set to start to take effect on May 20. The rules are intended to create an infrastructure that would support digital IDs that will be offered for citizens in the EU to access the internet. Internet companies are expected to be fully compliant by 2026. It is not, as of now, required of citizens, but some rights group argue it sets the stage to do so at a later date.

EU’s Controversial Digital ID Regulations Set for 2024, Mandating Big Tech Compliance by 2026

The EU’s new digital ID rules, the Digital Identity Regulation (eIDAS 2.0), are about to come into force on May 20, mandating compliance from Big Tech and member countries in supporting the EU Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet.

However, work is not complete on the EUDI Wallet, as several pilots are planned for 2025 to consolidate the process of the implementation of the rules.

According to the framework, the European Council passed recently, which has now been officially published, the deadline for the digital ID wallet to be recognized and made available is 2026. For now, it will be used in several scenarios, including accessing government services and age verification, reports note.

As things stand now, that deadline means that while the wallet scheme must become fully functional by that time, it will not be obligatory for citizens of the EU’s 27 members, and protection against discrimination is promised to those choosing not to opt in.

 

AI ethicists Tomasz Hollanek and Katarzyna Nowaczyk-Basińska have posited a theory based on a method of analysis called “design fiction” that has led them to conclude loved ones lost in the future, if they leave a digital footprint, including audio and video, can be recreated as an AI friend.

Nowaczyk-Basińska stated, “Rapid advancements in generative AI mean that nearly anyone with internet access and some basic know-how can revive a deceased loved one. At the same time, a person may leave an AI simulation as a farewell gift for loved ones who are not prepared to process their grief in this manner. The rights of both data donors and those who interact with AI afterlife services should be equally safeguarded.”

But for researchers at Cambridge University’s Leverhulme Center for the Future of Intelligence, this unregulated, uncharted “ethical minefield” is already here. And to drive the point home, they envisioned three, fictional scenarios that could easily occur any day now.

In a new study published in Philosophy and Technology, AI ethicists Tomasz Hollanek and Katarzyna Nowaczyk-Basińska relied on a strategy called “design fiction.” First coined by sci-fi author Bruce Sterling, design fiction refers to “a suspension of disbelief about change achieved through the use of diegetic prototypes.” Basically, researchers pen plausible events alongside fabricated visual aids.

For their research, Hollanek and Nowaczyk-Basińska imagined three hyperreal scenarios of fictional individuals running into issues with various “postmortem presence” companies, and then made digital props like fake websites and phone screenshots. The researchers focused on three distinct demographics—data donors, data recipients, and service interactants. “Data donors” are the people upon whom an AI program is based, while “data recipients” are defined as the companies or entities that may possess the digital information. “Service interactants,” meanwhile, are the relatives, friends, and anyone else who may utilize a “deadbot” or “ghostbot.”

Recent progress by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) researchers Joseph Orenstein, Yue Sun, Jie Yao, and Fanghao Meng has shown the potential of magnon wave packets – collective excitations of electron spins – to transport quantum information over substantial distances in a class of materials known as antiferromagnets. Their work upends conventional understanding about how such excitations propagate in antiferromagnets. The coming age of quantum technologies – computers, sensors, and other devices – depends on transmitting quantum information with fidelity, over distance.

With their discovery, reported in a paper published in Nature Physics, Orenstein and coworkers hope to have moved a step closer to these goals. Their research is part of broader efforts at Berkeley Lab to advance quantum information by working across the quantum research ecosystem, from theory to application, to fabricate and test quantum-based devices and develop software and algorithms.

The United States Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) is currently evaluating a new generation of robotic “dogs” developed by Ghost Robotics, with the potential to be equipped with gun systems from defense tech company Onyx Industries, reports The War Zone.

While MARSOC is testing Ghost Robotics’ quadrupedal unmanned ground vehicles (called “Q-UGVs” for short) for various applications, including reconnaissance and surveillance, it’s the possibility of arming them with weapons for remote engagement that may draw the most attention. But it’s not unprecedented: The US Marine Corps has also tested robotic dogs armed with rocket launchers in the past.

MARSOC is currently in possession of two armed Q-UGVs undergoing testing, as confirmed by Onyx Industries staff, and their gun systems are based on Onyx’s SENTRY remote weapon system (RWS), which features an AI-enabled digital imaging system and can automatically detect and track people, drones, or vehicles, reporting potential targets to a remote human operator that could be located anywhere in the world. The system maintains a human-in-the-loop control for fire decisions, and it cannot decide to fire autonomously.

That durability helps the hand, which is already being used in Google DeepMind’s robotics experiments, during the trial-and-error learning required to train artificial intelligence.

This latest robotic hand developed by the UK-based Shadow Robot Company can go from fully open to closed within 500 milliseconds and perform a fingertip pinch with up to 10 newtons of force. A new report has found that for the first time 30% of electricity produced worldwide came from renewable energy sources, predominantly solar and wind.

UK climate think tank Ember has published a report – Global Electricity Review 2024 – that analysed electricity data from 215 countries, as well as examining data from the highest carbon emitting countries and regions of the world.

It finds that renewables generated a record 30% of global electricity in 2023. From the analysis, 2023 saw a 23% growth in solar generation, 10% growth in wind generation and only a 0.8% growth in fossil generation.

“The renewables future has arrived. Solar, in particular, is accelerating faster than anyone thought possible,” said Dave Jones, Ember’s director of global insights.

Food-borne diseases like typhoid, caused by Salmonella Typhimurium, are a severe threat to public health, especially in India. The indiscriminate use of antibiotics has allowed this bacterium to become resistant, posing a major hurdle in treating infections.

In a recent study published in Redox Biology, she and her team have pinpointed how the bacterium uses a key molecule called spermidine to shield itself from the onslaught of the host’s defense machinery. After Chris Wild took over the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a UN-funded body in France that looks for statistical links between food/chemicals and cancer, they made a switch in their policies regarding participation; an epidemiologist who had ever consulted for industry could no longer vote on what to label a carcinogen.Even though it was hypocritical – epidemiologists working for trial lawyers or environmental groups were recruited – few inside IARC objected. Nor did anyone think they might. Environmental groups have manufactured an ethical halo so well that even their lawyers look like better people than other lawyers. They are, they assure us, poorly paid evangelists for health and safety against Evil Corporations.

Except none of that is true. For that ethical halo to be punctured even slightly, someone like Tom Girardi, who turned the “Erin Brockovich” case, trace levels of hexavalent chromium in Hinckley, California, into hundreds of millions of dollars for himself, has to engage in such spectacular fraud it gets attention. And even then his environmental shakedowns are minimized, though they were the same tactics he used against Pacific Gas  &  Electric.
