She claimed, “Putting these requirements together, the plaintiffs must show a substantial risk that, in the near future, at least one platform will restrict the speech of at least one plaintiff in response to the actions of at least one Government defendant. Here, at the preliminary injunction stage, they must show that they are likely to succeed in carrying that burden. On the record in this case, that is a tall order.”

NEW DELHI: A new study has provided “unambiguous evidence” that the Earth’s inner core began to slow down its rotation in 2010, compared to the planet’s surface. Researchers said that the slowing down could change the length of one day on the Earth by fractions of a second.
The Earth’s inner core, a solid sphere made of iron and nickel, is suspended within the liquid outer core (made of molten metals) and anchored in its place by gravity.Together, the inner and the outer core, form one of the planet’s three layers the other two being mantle and crust.
Being physically inaccessible, researchers usually study the core by analysing the recordings of waves sent out by earthquakes — seismograms.
“When I first saw the seismograms that hinted at this change, I was stumped,” said John Vidale, a professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Southern California, US.
“But when we found two dozen more observations signalling the same pattern, the result was inescapable. The inner core had slowed down for the first time in many decades,” said Vidale, also the corresponding author of the study published in the journal Nature.
The slowing down of the inner core is hotly debated in the scientific community, with some studies even suggesting that it rotates faster than the Earth’s surface.

Prosecutors said Pflugbeil and Shao were employees of a Canada-based manufacturing company that made and sold battery assembly lines for clients that needed alkaline and lithium-ion batteries. The Canada manufacturing firm was purchased by a company—identified in reports as Tesla—which gave the Elon Musk-led electric vehicle maker a leg up in continuous motion battery manufacturing.

“Despite Pflugbeil’s agreement to protect what he knew was proprietary, sensitive technology, he chose to abscond with these trade secrets to China, where he sought an unfair and illegal advantage in critical industries such as electric vehicle manufacturing,” assistant attorney general Matthew Olsen of the Justice Department’s National Security Division said in a statement. The conduct jeopardized national security, said Olsen.

Global production of lithium – an essential mineral for manufacturing the lithium-ion batteries that are found in everything from smartphones to electric cars – has tripled over the last 10 years, however current extraction techniques are slow and energy intensive.

These methods also require the lithium to be highly concentrated in the rock ore, meaning only a few countries have deposits worth mining.

A team of researchers from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME) have now come up with a way to extract lithium in a manner that they claim can overcome all of these issues.

The new method is so effective that it can extract lithium from sources that have been previously impossible on a commercial scale, such as seawater and groundwater.

“Right now there is a gap between the demand for lithium and the production,” said Chong Liu, an assistant professor at the University of Chicago PME.

But, if they can get it there—if they can find out exactly how to make concrete energy storage an everyday occurrence, then they could create some of the cheapest supercapacitors known to humankind.

The problem is caused by the flammable electrolyte, which can generate its own oxygen in a thermal runaway reaction. Scientists at Clemson University think their self-extinguishing electrolyte can make battery fires a thing of the past.

Battery-electric vehicles are our best bet in fighting climate change and reducing pollution in big cities. Modern EVs use lithium-ion batteries, which offer the highest energy density and a relatively long lifecycle. However, most Li-ion battery cells can be dangerous when they overheat, requiring complex thermal management systems. Because they use highly flammable electrolytes, they can burst into flames if the heat is not kept in check.This is called thermal runaway, although, from the outside, it looks more like an explosion or a rocket firing its engines. Because EV batteries are made of thousands of individual cells, the process affects adjacent cells unless it’s stopped. To make matters worse, the blazing cells generate their own oxygen, making the fire very difficult to put out. The reaction continues as long as the temperature is high enough or the electrolyte depletes. This is why firefighters dealing with an EV battery fire focus on cooling the battery pack.

Researchers at Clemson University in South Carolina thought that inventing an electrolyte that doesn’t catch fire is the simplest way to prevent battery fires. One that can put out its own fire is even better. So, instead of a common electrolyte, usually composed of a lithium salt and an organic solvent, they developed one based on materials found in a commercial fire extinguisher.

The revolutionary electrolyte works across a wide temperature range from about minus 100 to 175 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 75 to 80 degrees Celsius). During the nail penetration test, the batteries produced in the lab with this flame-retardant electrolyte extinguished internal fires effectively. Moreover, the electrolyte is compatible with other chemistries besides Li-ion, including potassium-ion, sodium-ion, aluminum-ion, and zinc-ion.

U.S. Army researchers working in collaboration with the University of Chicago have developed a new technology called “living bioelectronics” that blends electronics and living cell tissue to help heal damaged skin.

Dr. Jiuyun Shi, co-author of the study, said of the breakthrough, “This is a bridge from traditional bioelectronics, which incorporates living cells as part of the therapy. We’re very excited because it’s been a decade and a half in the making,”

Cobalt, graphite, lithium, manganese, and nickel are all essential to electrification in their own ways, but copper fulfills a particularly important responsibility in the production of EVs. Found in everything from the electric motors, batteries, inverters, and the wiring of an electric car as well as in the charging stations themselves, copper is attractive for electrification due to its ability to conduct heat, resist corrosion, and relatively low cost of production.

The Copper Development Association says that each electric vehicle can have up to a mile of copper inside of it. Similarly, the report notes that the manufacturing process of an EV uses around 132 pounds of copper, as compared to 52 pounds of copper used to produce an equivalent gasoline-powered vehicle.

It’s not the first attempt to sell off the company to American owners, with a previous push by the Trump administration falling through.

McCourt is leading a consortium of individuals and corporations under his Project Liberty umbrella. He has brought on Guggenheim Securities as the investment bank and Kirkland Ellis as the law firm that will take charge of the deal. He says he has been in talks with several interested parties to partner up on the sale, hinting that participation could be open to the public.

An outspoken critic of the data silo model of Big Tech, McCourt told one news outlet that he intends to rebuild the  social media platform as “a new and better version of the internet where individuals are respected, and they own and control their identity and their data.”

YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM)– York City council voted on a “ghost gun” bill at Tuesday’s meeting.

It was unanimous yes vote, meaning the bill passed and it now heads to to the mayor’s desk.

“Ghost guns” are unregistered and untraceable homemade weapons. It can be made with a 3D printer or 80% ghost gun build kits can be purchased online.

If the mayor signs it, the ordinance will go into effect in 20 days later, prohibiting the possession, use, transfer or manufacturing of ghost guns and establishing penalties. Anyone who violates the ordinance could be fined anywhere from $300 to $1,000, plus, costs of prosecution for each offense.
