Brown University Medical School now gives “diversity, equity, and inclusion” more weight than “excellent clinical skills” in its promotion criteria for faculty, raising questions about the quality of teaching and patient care at the elite medical school and underscoring how deeply DEI has penetrated medical education.

The criteria, which are posted on Brown’s website and have not been previously reported, list a “demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion” as a “major criterion” for all positions within the Department of Medicine, which oversees the bulk of the school’s clinical units. Clinical skills, by contrast, only count as a “minor criterion” for many roles.

Doctors who reviewed the criteria were alarmed, saying they reflect an unusually frank admission that merit is taking a back seat to DEI.

“This is as stark as it gets,” said Bob Cirincione, an orthopedic surgeon in Hagerstown, Maryland. The criteria “say what DEI in medical schools is all about. And it’s not about clinical performance.”

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs are billed as making society more tolerant, compassionate, and harmonious but actually increase hostility in workplace and educational settings, according to a recent study.

The study, by Rutgers University’s Network Contagion Research Institute, focused on “diversity training interventions that emphasize awareness of and opposition to ‘systemic oppression,’” which has “seen widespread adoption across sectors like higher education and healthcare.” It was conducted by exposing 423 Rutgers students to influential DEI training materials authored by far-left activists like Ibram X. Kendi and Robin DiAngelo, then surveying their reactions.

“Across all groupings (race, religion, and caste-based), instead of reducing bias, they engendered a hostile attribution bias,” the researchers found, “amplifying perceptions of prejudicial hostility where none was present, and punitive responses to the imaginary prejudice.”

“This research raises critical questions about how many individuals, as a result of these programs, have experienced undue duress, social ostracization, or even termination of employment,” said the researchers, who called for further research into “the potential for a far broader scope of harm than previously considered.”

Law schools are different from other academic institutions. They are the incubators of America’s future elite. When they go wrong, it profoundly affects the wider culture in a way that other institutions do not.

That’s the central point in Lawless: The Miseducation of America’s Elites, the compelling new book by Ilya Shapiro. Shapiro, a lawyer, a veteran of the libertarian Cato Institute, and a fellow at the Manhattan Institute, gained fame in 2022 when he was investigated for political incorrectness prior to starting a position as executive director of the Georgetown Law School Center for the Constitution.

Georgetown investigated Shapiro after he posted that Sri Srinivasan, the chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, would be President Joe Biden’s “best pick” for the Supreme Court. Shapiro added: “But alas [Srinivasan] doesn’t fit into [the] latest intersectionality hierarchy so we’ll get [a] lesser black woman.”

Shapiro’s “lesser black woman” phrasing caused a reaction and led Georgetown Law Dean William Treanor to denounce the post as “appalling” and “at odds with everything we stand for at Georgetown Law.” It completely upended Shapiro’s life.

The Equal Protection Project (EPP) (EqualProtect.org) of the Legal Insurrection Foundation has challenged numerous discriminatory programs done in the name of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. In all we have filed over 50 complaints and legal actions since launch in February 2023, with approximately half the schools withdrawing or modifying the discriminatory programs after our filing. You may recall that on December 11, 2024, we filed a Civil Rights Complaint against the University of Rhode Island challenging 51 scholarships that discriminated on the basis of race (23), race and sex (5), or sex (23)., as detailed in this post, Fifty-One Discriminatory Scholarships At University of Rhode Island Challenged By Equal Protection Project. We included a request for expedited treatment:

Indeed, URI appears to admit that there is a strong likelihood that several of its discriminatory scholarships are unlawful – because in its descriptions of such scholarships URI notes that “if such an award would not otherwise comply with applicable law, then the scholarship shall go to a student with demonstrated financial need and in good standing from a historically underrepresented population at the University.”18 This reflects both a consciousness of guilt on the part of URI and a callous disregard for federal anti-discrimination laws and URI’s constitutional obligations. This highlights the urgent need for OCR to conduct an investigation and put an end to this misconduct before the spring 2025 reapplication period begins.
