Here’s How DEI-Crazed Officials Made The LA Fire More Deadly– thefederalist.com

Excerpt:

As relentless fires burn in Los Angeles, thousands of residents who fled their homes are just learning how poorly public officials prepared for such an event. Emergency response leaders following bad public policy have been too focused on sending firefighting equipment to Ukraine, keeping the homeless safe, protecting fish, and adopting green policies to focus on things like making sure there is enough water to feed fire hydrants and guaranteeing that the strongest, best-trained, most-skilled firefighters are leading operations.

Officials seem to believe that when fire forces you to flee your home, there is just one thing on your mind: the skin color and cultural experience of the firefighters who will bring you to safety. Will they be diverse enough to rescue you? Never mind if they are the best for the job, are they anything but straight white men?

That has been a major priority of the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), which, in 2022, launched its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Bureau (DEI), purportedly “focused on ensuring a safe, diverse and inclusive workplace for all.”

In January 2022, then-Mayor Eric Garcetti checked multiple DEI boxes by appointing Kristin Crowley as fire chief, the first female, LGBT chief in Los Angeles. That year, according to LAFD data, “of the more than 6,500 applicants to LAFD, 70% were people of color and nearly 8% … were female,” which was “double the … percentage of female firefighters within the Department” at the time.

The LAFD Girls Camp is one avenue for recruitment for female firefighters, hosting girls between 14 and 18 to explore career opportunities in the department.

A man attempting to enter the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center (CVC) on Wednesday was stopped and arrested after security officers discovered a machete and multiple knives in his bag. The incident unfolded just hours before President-elect Donald Trump’s scheduled appearance on Capitol Hill to meet with Senate Republicans, marking a dramatic moment in the otherwise routine proceedings of the day. According to a statement from the U.S. Capitol Police, the man was apprehended around 2 p.m. at the north doors of the CVC during standard security screening.

Officers monitoring the X-ray machine noticed the machete in his bag, prompting an immediate halt to the screening process. A subsequent search of the bag uncovered three additional knives, all of which were secured by police before the suspect was taken into custody. The individual, whose name has not yet been released, was charged with multiple counts of carrying a dangerous weapon.

Bill Gates Calls for ‘Death Panels’ to Euthanize Citizens Not ‘Worthy of Healthcare’– slaynews.com

Excerpt:

As nations around the world push to introduce and expand liberal euthanasia laws, the plans are sounding eerily similar to the “assisted suicide” agenda billionaire Bill Gates has been promoting for several years.

The Microsoft co-founder argues that it is not cost-effective to provide individuals with long-term healthcare.

Instead, Gates believes his fellow human beings should be euthanized to reduce healthcare costs so that the money that would have been used for treatments can be spent elsewhere.

In 2010, Gates weighed up the cost of keeping “terminally ill” Americans alive versus paying for teachers’ salaries.

Gates lamented that Americans are unwilling to question if spending money on people in “the last three months” of their lives was cost-effective.

He suggested there wasn’t a benefit in end-of-life care and a decision should be made to end people’s lives instead of providing costly palliative care.

He argued that a panel of bureaucrats should decide whether a person deserves to receive treatment, with those who are not “worthy of healthcare” being euthanized by the government to save money.

“That’s called the ‘death panel’,” he said of the group who would decide whether people get to live or die.

Gates made the remarks during an interview at an Aspen Ideas Festival in 2010.

Trump Says Gavin Newsom’s Attempt to Protect an ‘Essentially Worthless Fish’ Caused Fire Disaster– www.westernjournal.com

President-elect Donald Trump accused California Gov. Gavin Newsom of being partly to blame for Los Angeles firefighters not having the water they needed to fight wildfires that erupted on Tuesday.

“Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California, including the areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

“He wanted to protect an essentially worthless fish called a smelt, by giving it less water (it didn’t work!), but didn’t care about the people of California. Now the ultimate price is being paid,” the president-elect continued.

“I will demand that this incompetent governor allow beautiful, clean, fresh water to FLOW INTO CALIFORNIA! He is the blame for this. On top of it all, no water for fire hydrants, not firefighting planes. A true disaster!” Trump wrote.

Did California Gov. Gavin Newsom understand that the optics when making this statement were atrocious? The state’s political leadership is at fault for the fiasco in Los Angeles County, where wildfires are raging. Over 30,000 acres have been torched, 1,000 buildings destroyed, at least five lives lost, and none of these blazes are contained. A fire erupted on Hollywood Hills last night, placing the heart of Los Angeles in harm’s way.

President-elect Donald J. Trump has blamed California for not taking the necessary measures to prepare for wildfires. The state’s obsession with saving some minnow led to hydrants having no water. Mayor Karen Bass wasn’t even in the country when the blaze started.

Some reporters responded lightly with a “yay” and a clap for Biden as he spoke about his granddaughter Naomi, 31, giving birth to a baby boy. Naomi is the daughter of Hunter Biden.

The baby announcement collided with the raw reality of devastation for so many Californians suffering destruction and homelessness due to the fires in the Los Angeles area.

Victor Davis Hanson, Wednesday on Newsmax, slammed the implementation of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) criteria in fire department hiring practices in California.

During an appearance on “Finnerty,” Hanson said these policies prioritize DEI above essential firefighting qualifications like experience and physical readiness. Hanson said that hiring workers based on DEI led to an ill-equipped workforce in the state.

“The DEI fire chief, 70% of her hires have been based on DEI. Not muscularity, not experience, not size, not competence. The primary criterion was DEI. And so the only… thing that is different about this is that this was not the inner city. This was, as Donald Trump mentioned, and I’ve taught at Pepperdine, I just got back from there. This is the most elite area of California,” Hanson told Rob Finnerty.

Hanson also said that there’s a broader failure in California’s management of natural resources and emergency preparedness.

California wildfire season should be over. So why is L.A. burning?– www.sciencenews.org Source Link Excerpt:

Unusually dry conditions and hurricane-force seasonal winds are fueling multiple fast-moving and destructive wildfires in Los Angeles County. Gusts that reached over 145 kilometers per hour (90 miles per hour) quickly drove the blazes into urban areas, forcing more than 100,000 people to evacuate from their homes and killing at least two people as of January 8.

The largest of the blazes, known as the Palisades fire, erupted the morning of January 7 on the west side of Los Angeles and has since burned more than 6,400 hectares (15,800 acres) and destroyed around 1,000 structures. The second largest, called the Eaton fire, ignited near Pasadena that night and had burned more than 4,290 hectares by the next morning. A third blaze, the Hurst fire near Sylmar, has burned more than 200 hectares.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass finally returned from her taxpayer-funded escapade to Africa on Wednesday, and she’s been feeling the heat ever since. She left for the inexplicable photo-op even as fires were already kicking up near her city, leaving a void of leadership during a crucial time.

Since touching down back in America, Bass has faced numerous questions about why she was even in Ghana in the first place. Remember, this was an “official” trip paid for by taxpayers. Why does the mayor of California’s largest city need to be part of a delegation to a third-world African nation? Are we supposed to believe there’s some great economic interest at play? And if it was just a photo-op, which is almost assuredly the real reason, doesn’t that make it even worse?

While pondering those questions, I came across an old social media post from Bass, first reported by RedState in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

A new fire in Los Angeles erupted late Wednesday night shortly after a fire exploded in the Hollywood Hills.

Several structures are on fire in Studio City.

A spox for the LAFD told KTLA the Hollywood Hills fire and Studio City fire are not connected.

KTLA reported:

A four-story structure fire in Studio City erupted and quickly spread to nearby hillside homes on Wednesday night.

The Los Angeles Fire Department reported the fire on the 3000 block of North Sunswept Drive at 8:52 p.m., saying the residence was “well involved in fire with exposures and vegetation.”

The four-story home collapsed from the flames and the wind picked up the embers to nearby brush, according to officials.

“We did just have the winds pick up again so we are seeing some ember casting from that four-story structure,” Adam Vangerpen, a spokesperson with LAFD, told KTLA around 9:30 p.m. “Our hope is to hit it hard, and we’re trying to keep it out of the brush right now.”

Vangerpen said this fire was not connected to the Sunset Fire currently burning in the Hollywood Hills.

Firefighters in Los Angeles County are battling four life-threatening wildfires almost 24 hours after the first flames broke out in the Palisades area, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reports. The fires were whipped up in a flash thanks to a combination of unusually dry weather and hurricane-force gusts that reached speeds of up to 99 mph (160 km/h).

Tens of thousands of LA residents have been evacuated from their homes and the four fires have spread across over 13,000 acres (5,260 hectares) have been burned by the four fires as of Wednesday morning (Jan. 8.) The fires have destroyed more than 1,000 structures so far and two confirmed fatalities have been reported, according to the Associated Press (AP).

The fires are flourishing due to dry conditions, while firefighters have reported that some hydrants in the Pacific Palisades are coming up dry, potentially hindering fire-extinguishing efforts, according to the Los Angeles Times. The blaze is expected to continue until Thursday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS.) Strong winds also grounded fire-fighting planes overnight, further hindering efforts to contain blazes, according to the LA Times.

The flames are being fanned by a dangerous windstorm, which could also threaten lives and cause damage to properties.

“A life-threatening, destructive, widespread windstorm is expected Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning,” NWS said in a warning early on Jan. 8. “Please stay indoors and away from windows during this time, and expect power outages.”

Ukraine will no longer allow Russian gas to pass through en route to European neighbours in a move that will hurt both the Kremlin and EU states dependent on Putin’s energy supply.

On January 1, the 2019 deal, which saw gas transit through Ukraine to states like Slovakia and Austria, expired.

President Zelensky heralded the move as “one of Moscow’s biggest defeats”, while his energy minister branded it “historic”.

The closure of the Urengoy–Pomary–Uzhhorod, which is also known as the Brotherhood pipeline, will cost Russian gas company Gazprom around £5bn a year – a bitter blow for Putin’s creaking war economy.

However, it’s not just Russia that is reeling following the expiration of the gas deal. Several European states are heavily dependent on Russian gas transported through Ukraine.

Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, as well as Moldova, are reliant on the steady flow of energy through Ukraine. Now that that is no longer possible, the only route remaining into Europe from Russia is via the TurkStream pipeline and the BlueSteam pipeline, under the Black Sea.
