As a kid, I was a bit rambunctious. I talked a lot in class, acted up some, and didn’t always pay attention to the lesson. Halfway through 8th grade my English teacher, Mrs. Hunt, told me something profound.

“You know, your classmates really look up to you. They see you as a leader. I bet if you paid attention in class more, you could teach them a thing or two,” she said.

That conversation changed my life. After that, I took my education seriously and tried to be the leader Mrs. Hunt thought I could be. Years later, I completed my doctoral degree in higher education. That conversation with Mrs. Hunt was a defining moment that put me on the pathway to academic and financial success.

This is not a unique story in America. Right after college, I was a middle school math teacher in a low-income community. I learned firsthand what Mrs. Hunt and so many other great teachers already knew — any kid can learn, regardless of zip code, race, income, or background. They just need great teachers who care about their future and an education bureaucracy that gets out of the way.

But right now, bad education policy has put our education system in crisis.

The 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) — known as The Nation’s Report Card — paints a grim portrait of K-12 achievement nationwide. These results, the first comprehensive post-pandemic snapshot, reveal American students testing at historic lows across math, reading, and science. In 8th-grade science, only 31% scored proficient, marking the first decline since 2009. For 12th graders, only 22% are proficient in math — the lowest average score since 2005. Nearly two-thirds lack proficiency in reading.

Doubtlessly, a new age has just begun.

Most of Gen Z was nothing more than a twinkle in their parents’ eyes when 9/11 occurred. They never lived in a version of America without the Transportation Security Administration or looming terrorist threats. They were born into the aftermath, a world filled with warnings. Don’t play outside unsupervised, don’t take candy from strangers, don’t sit on a bus with your headphones on.

Zoomers are well accustomed to a world where safety is the primary concern because threats are always dangling nearby. They were raised in the era of “cancel culture” and closed dialogue. They were told that the best thing they could do was sit on their phones and scroll through social media, self-censoring their own thoughts.

That’s where Charlie Kirk met many young Americans.

For a demographic that was born in a world obsessed with fearmongering, it was a special thing to have someone make a call for truth through open conversation. Even the large nonpolitical segment of this group formed an emotional attachment to Kirk. He often trended, with clips of him going viral on a weekly basis. Teachers didn’t attack Kirk the same way they attacked Trump, because Kirk was not a public official but a personality to be reckoned with. This gave young people space to approach his rhetoric.

These same young people are not going to tolerate the horrific death of someone they came to know and care about. They have spent their entire lives being told that safety is a priority and forced tolerance will give them safety.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating social media posts by at least seven different accounts that appeared to indicate foreknowledge of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, according to three people familiar with the investigation and screenshots obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

The posts—one of which referenced the date of Kirk’s assassination, September 10, more than a month before it took place—were all deleted in the days following the killing. Several of the accounts appear to belong to transgender individuals, and at least one of them followed suspect Tyler Robinson’s roommate, with whom Robinson was allegedly in a relationship, on TikTok.

The FBI has received archived copies of the posts, according to a person who flagged them for the agency. Screenshots of the posts have been circulating online but had not been previously authenticated.

While the posts do not establish that any of the individuals knew or conspired with Robinson, the 22-year-old gunman who allegedly shot Kirk, several of them mention the conservative activist by name and fantasize about his death.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed Monday that suspect Tyler Robinson’s DNA was found on evidence at the crime scene. 

Speaking to “Fox & Friends,” Patel said Robinson’s DNA was discovered on a screwdriver left on the rooftop where the shot was fired at Charlie Kirk, as well as on a towel that was wrapped around the rifle used in the assassination.   





“I can report today that the DNA hits from the towel that was wrapped around the firearm and the DNA on the screwdriver are positively processed for the suspect in custody,” Patel said.

The FBI director also revealed that Robinson told another individual in a text message exchange that “he had an opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and he was going to do it because of his hatred for what Charlie stood for,” Patel said. 

Co-host Brian Kilmeade followed up to ask about a written note from Robinson prior to the shooting.

Patel confirmed its existence and said even though it had been destroyed, the FBI “found forensic evidence of the note, and we have confirmed what that note says because of our aggressive interview posture at the FBI.”

The note, which echoed what Robinson wrote in the text message referenced earlier, said “I have the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it,” Patel told the hosts, paraphrasing.

A knife-wielding man was shot dead during a police pursuit in New York City after entering a police precinct and slashing an officer in the face with a 14-inch blade, authorities said Sunday.

The attack unfolded just before 5:30 a.m. at the 73rd Precinct in Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood when a man entered the building through an employee entrance, NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera told reporters at a briefing.

When a female officer stopped the man and told him to go out and enter through the front door, the man pulled out “a large butcher knife” and slashed her in the face, Rivera said.

In a new study, physicists at the University of Colorado Boulder have used liquid crystals, the same materials that are in your phone display, to create such a clock — or, at least, as close as humans can get to that idea. The team’s advancement is a new example of a “time crystal.” That’s the name for a curious phase of matter in which the pieces, such as atoms or other particles, exist in constant motion.

The researchers aren’t the first to make a time crystal, but their creation is the first that humans can actually see, which could open a host of technological applications.

An Australian woman has been jailed for life, with no chance of release for at least 33 years, for murdering three relatives and trying to kill another with a toxic mushroom meal.

The jail term, one of the longest ever handed to a female offender in Australia, means Erin Patterson, 50, will be in her 80s before she can apply for parole.

A Supreme Court judge said Patterson’s crimes were the “worst category” for offending and involved an “elaborate cover-up”.

Patterson killed her in-laws Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson, 66, after serving them a toxic beef Wellington at her home in Victoria in 2023.

Heather’s husband Ian Wilkinson, a local pastor, survived the lunch after recovering from a coma and has ongoing health issues related to the poisoning.

Patterson’s estranged husband Simon Patterson was meant to attend the lunch too but cancelled at the last minute, in part due to his belief that his wife had been trying to poison him for years.

At least six people were killed and more than a dozen were injured after a pair of attackers opened fire on a bus in Jerusalem Monday morning, paramedics said.

The shooting unfolded at a busy intersection in northern Jerusalem, on a road that leads to Jewish settlements located in east Jerusalem. Israeli media reported that the two attackers boarded a bus and opened fire. Paramedics said 14 other people were injured and five are in serious condition.

Police said two attackers were “neutralized” soon after the shooting began but have not released additional information about the attackers’ identities.

Hamas released a statement praising “resistance fighters” who carried out the attack, but the group did not explicitly claim credit for the shooting. Another terrorist organization, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, also praised the shooting but did not claim responsibility for it.
