Imagine a future where the internet isn’t just fast, it’s fundamentally different. Where information doesn’t travel through cables in bits and bytes, but dances across space in entangled photons, instantaneously linking quantum computers continents apart. In this shimmering vision of tomorrow, the backbone of communication is no longer copper or fiber; it’s quantum light.

At the heart of this revolution is a peculiar phenomenon known as squeezed light, and a team of researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology believes it may be the key to unlocking scalable quantum networks. Their latest study, led by Fermilab scientist Alexandru Macridin, marks a pivotal step toward building a quantum internet, one that could transform scientific research, cryptography, and computing itself.

Quantum networks rely on entangled qubits: pairs of quantum bits that remain mysteriously connected, no matter how far apart they are. In quantum physics, entanglement is the ghostly thread that links particles across space, such that a change in one instantly affects the other. It’s a phenomenon Einstein famously referred to as “spooky action at a distance,” and it forms the cornerstone of quantum communication.

In response to a Federalist inquiry, not a single Democrat U.S. Senator called for the Virginia Democrat attorney general candidate Jay Jones to drop out of the race in light of his text messages fantasizing about assassinating Republican Todd Gilbert.

“Put Gilbert in the crew with the two worst people you know and he receives both bullets every time,” Jones wrote, after running a hypothetical about how to allocate two bullets among Gilbert, Hitler, and Pol Pot. The 2022 text messages were first reported by National Review on Friday. According to a source cited by the outlet, Jones also “suggested he wished Gilbert’s wife could watch her own child die in her arms so that Gilbert might reconsider his political views” in a follow-up phone call with a Republican state lawmaker.

The Federalist reached out to each Senate Democrat, asking if they would call for Jones to drop out of the race in light of his violent comments.

Only Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., addressed The Federalist’s inquiry. Though Kaine criticized Jones’ remarks, he also refused to call for him to drop out. “There is nothing that can justify these indefensible words, and they are contrary to all I’ve known about Jay Jones for decades,” Kaine said. “With hundreds of thousands of Virginians already having voted, it’s up to Virginians to decide.”

With ICE facilities still facing attacks and besiegement by “protesters,” the far left has come up with a new way to “defeat” federal immigration authorities. Thankfully, this one doesn’t involve snipers on rooftops or setting things on fire. It is hilariously stupid, though, and perhaps a bit more nefarious than it first appears.

The recent trend involves demonstrators dressing up in inflatable dinosaur costumes and “dancing” in front of ICE agents. Here’s what that looks like in practice.

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — Former FBI Director James Comey pleaded not guilty Wednesday morning to charges of making false statements and obstructing a 2020 congressional proceeding, as prosecutors signaled the case would introduce classified information in the discovery phase of legal proceedings.

The prosecution, led by U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan, argued this was a complicated case and pushed for more time before bringing it to trial. U.S. District Judge Michael Nachmanoff raised skepticism about how complicated the two-charge indictment is, but he eventually agreed that a preliminary date for when the trial could begin is Jan. 5.

The government requested that a trial take place outside the “speedy trial window” in part because there is a large amount of discovery in the case, including classified materials, which were not previously discussed before the arraignment.

Former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey pleaded not guilty Wednesday to the two criminal charges he faces for allegedly lying to Congress.

Comey was indicted Sept. 25 for making a false statement and obstruction of a congressional proceeding. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

But in his arraignment Wednesday, Comey pleaded not guilty to both charges and requested a jury trial, which has been scheduled for Jan. 5, 2026. The government says it expects the trial to take 2-3 days.

Comey is represented by former federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, who is known for being the first to bring charges against Osama bin Laden in 1996.

The charges against Comey concern his 2020 testimony before Congress on the investigation into alleged Trump-Russia collusion in the 2016 election. Comey briefly headed that investigation during his tenure as FBI director before President Donald Trump fired him in May 2017.

US President Donald Trump has called for the imprisonment of Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect federal immigration officers. The remarks, posted on Trump’s social media platform Truth Social, come amid ongoing political tensions over immigration enforcement and the deployment of federal troops in Democratic-led cities.“Chicago Mayor should be in jail for failing to protect ICE Officers! Governor Pritzker also!” Trump wrote, referring to US immigration and customs enforcement personnel operating in the city.

Trump’s comments follow a recent executive order by Johnson that designates city property as an “ICE Free Zone,” restricting federal immigration agents from using municipal facilities. The move was seen as a direct pushback against federal immigration operations within the city.Trump’s statement adds to a broader dispute over the use of the national guard in Democrat-led states. Hundreds of Texas national guard soldiers have reportedly assembled at a military facility near Chicago, despite vocal opposition from state leadership, including Johnson and Pritzker. The administration has not accused either Johnson or Pritzker of any wrongdoing legally. Both leaders have opposed Trump’s immigration policies and criticized what they see as the federal government’s overreach. Pritzker has previously accused Trump of trying to provoke unrest as a means to justify military deployments.

Roblox, which reports more than 111 million active monthly users, is used by roughly two-thirds of American children aged 9 to 12.

Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman has filed a lawsuit against Roblox, alleging the company failed to protect minors from sexual predators and explicit material, including violent simulations depicting the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

Filed on Monday, the suit accuses the California gaming platform of operating as a “playground for pedophiles” by neglecting to implement any meaningful age verification, moderation, or parental safeguards. Roblox, which reports more than 111 million active monthly users, is used by roughly two-thirds of American children aged 9 to 12.

According to the complaint, predators frequently create fake accounts posing as children to contact and groom minors. “Roblox is designed to allow predators easy access to children,” prosecutors wrote, alleging that the company’s inaction has resulted in “harassment, kidnapping, trafficking, violence, and sexual assault.”

President Donald Trump celebrated the election of the right-wing Sanae Takaichi as the likely next prime minister of Japan.

Takaichi is set to become the first female prime minister of Japan after she won the presidency of the Liberal Democratic Party, which has ruled Japan almost uninterrupted since 1955. Feminists on the left aren’t celebrating, however, as Takaichi has distinguished herself as a hard-line conservative.

“Japan has just elected its first female Prime Minister, a highly respected person of great wisdom and strength. This is tremendous news for the incredible people of Japan. Congratulations to all!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, signing his name at the end.

Trump’s congratulations are likely more than a simple nicety. Takaichi’s right-wing views are in line with those of her U.S. counterpart. She also boasts one of Trump’s best friends on the international stage as her mentor, the late former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Takaichi is also known for her hard-line views on China, a key priority that plays into Trump’s vision for the Indo-Pacific region. She’s also expressed her opposition to immigration to Japan, one of Trump’s central issues.

Impeach Judge Who Let Would-Be SCOTUS Assassin Off Easy– thefederalist.com

Last Friday, Judge Deborah Boardman of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland shocked anyone with a conscience by imposing a comically light sentence on the young man, Nicholas Roske, who tried to kill Justice Brett Kavanaugh in the spring of 2022, while also planning to kill two more of Kavanaugh’s conservative colleagues.

In doing so, she functionally condoned political violence — as long as it’s from the left — and based her decision, in large part, on her sympathy for the purported transgender status of the would-be assassin. In a year of preposterous district court decisions, this one takes the cake: Boardman gave a slap on the wrist to someone who planned and attempted the worst sort of political terrorism, it seems, because of her ideological sympathies. The decision is so potentially corrosive to our civic peace that Congress would be right to consider impeachment proceedings against Boardman.

As federal district judges have found increasingly novel and extreme ways to foil the Trump administration’s agenda, calls on the right for judicial impeachment have grown. Indeed, actual articles of impeachment have been introduced. This past spring, the chief justice himself denounced the movement. That he did so was imprudent — it’s not for judges to decide how Congress wields the impeachment power — but his basic argument was probably right. Going back to the start of the republic, there has been a general agreement that mere political disagreement is not enough to warrant impeaching a judge.

Federal agents on Monday intercepted a Chicago gang leader who they claim was hiring for the assassination of a senior official in the U.S. Border Patrol, interfering with the gang’s illicit activities.

Juan Espinoza Martinez, a leading figure in the Latin Kings, was arrested as part of “Operation Midway Blitz” after allegedly offering cash bounties to any individuals who could carry out the murder of a top official in the Border Patrol, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security identified the official being targeted as Commander at Large of the U.S. Border Patrol, Chief Gregory Bovino.

U.S. Attorney Andrew S. Boutros called the alleged plot “an attack on the rule of law.”

“Putting a price on the life of a law enforcement officer is an attack on the rule of law,” Boutros said. “The defendant’s actions in this case demonstrate a profound contempt for human life and public safety. Under my leadership, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago will hold defendants accountable for their grave criminal actions and ensure that no federal officer has to fear for their life for doing their job.”

According to an indictment unsealed on Monday, Martinez is one of the highest sergeants in the Latin Kings, a nationwide gang that’s been linked to bloody murders of police officers, extortion, and human and drug trafficking. DHS said Martinez is from Mexico and entered the U.S. illegally at an unknown date.

Messages allegedly sent by Martinez over Snapchat stated  “2k on information when you get him” and “10k if you take him down.”

Trump declares war on Mexico’s cartels as unlawful combatants– www.theblaze.com

President Donald Trump has finally named the enemy: Mexican drug cartels. Declaring them unlawful combatants and recognizing a “non-international armed conflict” marks one of the most consequential national security shifts in modern history.

For decades, Washington treated cartel violence as a crime — a problem for prosecutors, not generals. Indictments were filed, assets seized, and sanctions imposed. But the cartels fought a different kind of war, one that combined terror, intelligence, and territorial control. Calling it “crime” guaranteed defeat.

We refused to define the cartels as belligerents — and fought the wrong fight.

According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, Mexico ranks among the world’s most violent conflict zones — behind only Palestine, Myanmar, and Syria. It is also the second-most dangerous country for civilians. Those numbers are not from a failed state overseas. They come from our southern border, where cartel wars spill into American communities daily.

‘Momentum’ in New Jersey race with Ciattarelli amid Sherrill bumps– www.washingtonexaminer.com

Excerpt:

Washington Examiner Contributing Writer Joe Concha said recent events in New Jersey’s gubernatorial election could tip the scales and give Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli the victory this November.

Democratic gubernatorial nominee Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) is facing several campaign setbacks amid reports on her, including failing to explain how she made $7 million in stock trades after getting elected to Congress and being unable to walk at her Naval Academy graduation in 1994. These two controversies have cast uncertainty on her winning New Jersey, which is reliably a Democratic stronghold.

Concha, a New Jersey resident himself, said the election isn’t about how it starts, but how it ends. He said almost all current polls put Ciattarelli and Sherrill in a “dead heat,” including one that was “the most accurate” on the 2024 election.

“So we have a Mikie Sherrill who, this is a business show, still can’t explain how she tripled her worth and made $7 million in stocks, defense stocks, amazingly that she picked just like [former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) husband] Paul Pelosi would, while she was on the Armed Services committee in the House,” Concha said on Fox Business’s Varney & Co.

“So, between that, between the fact that she obviously has a cheating scandal on her hands, she couldn’t even walk with her graduating class at the Naval Academy for some reason, yet she won’t explain or at least release the transcript as far as her disciplinary records. Jack Ciattarelli has all the momentum right now,” Concha said.

AMD wins massive AI chip deal from OpenAI with stock sweetener– arstechnica.com

As part of the arrangement, AMD will allow OpenAI to purchase up to 160 million AMD shares at 1 cent each throughout the chips deal.

With demand for AI compute growing rapidly, companies like OpenAI have been looking for secondary supply lines and sources of additional computing capacity, and the AMD partnership is part the company’s wider effort to secure sufficient computing power for its AI operations. In September, Nvidia announced an investment of up to $100 billion in OpenAI that included supplying at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems. OpenAI plans to deploy a gigawatt of Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin chips in late 2026.

OpenAI has worked with AMD for years, according to Reuters, providing input on the design of older generations of AI chips such as the MI300X. The new agreement calls for deploying the equivalent of 6 gigawatts of computing power using AMD chips over multiple years.

Beyond working with chip suppliers, OpenAI is widely reported to be developing its own silicon for AI applications and has partnered with Broadcom, as we reported in February. A person familiar with the matter told Reuters the AMD deal does not change OpenAI’s ongoing compute plans, including its chip development effort or its partnership with Microsoft.

‘Swarms of Killer Robots’: Why AI is Terrifying the American Military – Politico
Source Link
Excerpt:

Artificial intelligence technology is poised to transform national security. In the United States, experts and policymakers are already experimenting with large language models that can aid in strategic decision-making in conflicts and autonomous weapons systems (or, as they are more commonly called, “killer robots”) that can make real-time decisions about what to target and whether to use lethal force.

But these new technologies also pose enormous risks. The Pentagon is filled with some of the country’s most sensitive information. Putting that information in the hands of AI tools makes it more vulnerable, both to foreign hackers and to malicious inside actors who want to leak information, as AI can comb through and summarize massive amounts of information better than any human. A misaligned AI agent can also quickly lead to decision-making that unnecessarily escalates conflict.

An international team of scientists led by researchers at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS), Imperial College London and the University of Cologne have discovered that microbes associated with tumors produce a molecule, which can control cancer progression and boost the effectiveness of chemotherapy.

Most people are familiar with the microbes on our skin or in our gut, but recent discoveries have revealed that tumors also host unique communities of bacteria. Scientists are now investigating how these tumor-associated bacteria can affect tumor growth and the response to chemotherapy.

New research, published online in Cell Systems on September 10, 2025, provides a significant breakthrough in this field, identifying a powerful anti-cancer metabolite produced by bacteria associated with colorectal cancer. This finding opens the door to new strategies for treating cancer, including the development of novel drugs that could make existing therapies more potent.

The researchers used a sophisticated large-scale screening approach to test over 1,100 conditions in a type of microscopic worm called C. elegans. Through this, they found that the bacteria E. coli produced a molecule called 2-methylisocitrate (2-MiCit) that could improve the effectiveness of the chemotherapy drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU).

A court in the northwestern Pskov region released opposition politician Lev Shlosberg from house arrest pending trial for his criticism of the invasion of Ukraine, the Yabloko party’s press service said Tuesday.

Shlosberg, a senior Yabloko member who has remained in Russia despite his opposition to the war, faces up to five years in prison if found guilty of repeatedly “discrediting” the military. The 62-year-old politician was already fined twice on administrative charges for the same offense.

The Pskov City Court ruled to impose a ban on certain activities instead of continuing Shlosberg’s house arrest, which he has been under since June. Yabloko said Shlosberg was barred from using the internet, a phone and communicating with anyone outside his household for four months.

Local media reported that the Pskov court system’s Telegram channel preemptively published — and then deleted — a post wrongly claiming that the court had extended Shlosberg’s house arrest by another two months.

German government advisory body proposes raising retirement age to 73 by 2060– rmx.news

Germany’s pension system should gradually raise the retirement age to 73 by 2060, according to a report by the Economics Ministry’s new scientific advisory board.

The panel of economists warns that without significant reform, the system will become unsustainable as productivity stagnates and the population continues to age.

The report, presented on Monday and cited by Bild, concludes that demographic realities and low economic growth leave no alternative but to extend working lives. It was prepared by economists Justus Haucap of the University of Düsseldorf, Stefan Kolev of the Ludwig Erhard Forum, Volker Wieland of the Institute for Monetary and Financial Stability in Frankfurt, and Veronica Grimm of Nuremberg University of Technology. All four are known for advocating free-market solutions and limited government intervention.

“The time for reforms is becoming increasingly urgent,” the authors wrote. “Economic output has been stagnating for years, while comparable economies are growing significantly more dynamically.” The report attributes this to weak productivity growth and demographic decline, arguing that Germany must adjust its retirement policies to reflect rising life expectancy.

Emmanuel Macron should name a prime minister to push through a budget and then call early presidential elections to solve France’s political crisis, his first prime minister has said.

Édouard Philippe’s comments come after France’s third prime minister in a year, Sébastien Lecornu, resigned on Monday after his bid to form a government fell apart.

Macron has asked him to make a last-ditch plan for stability by the end of Wednesday – but support for the French president appears to be waning even among his allies.

Philippe, who was prime minister from 2017-20 and now leads the centrist Horizons party, said he was “not in favour of his immediate and abrupt resignation”, but that it was up to the president to live up to his mandate.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Attal – who leads Macron’s Renaissance party and was prime minister for six months in 2024 – went on national TV on Monday night to say he “no longer understands the decisions made by the president of the republic”.

WTO downgrades global trade growth forecast to 0.5% for next year– www.channelnewsasia.com

Excerpt:

GENEVA: The World Trade Organization sharply lowered its 2026 forecast for global merchandise trade volume growth to 0.5 per cent on Tuesday (Oct 7), citing expected delayed impacts from US President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

It marks a significant revision down from its previous estimate in August of 1.8 per cent growth.

“The outlook for next year is bleaker … I am very concerned,” Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala told reporters in Geneva.

However, she said the world trading system is showing resilience, with the rules-based multilateral system providing some stability amid trade turmoil.

For 2025, the WTO upgraded its forecast for global trade volume growth to 2.4 per cent, from 0.9 per cent previously, driven primarily by the front-loading of imports into the United States ahead of tariff hikes and growth in the trade of AI-related goods. It is still below the 2.8 per cent growth seen in 2024.

Trump’s tariff decisions since he took office in January have shocked financial markets and sent a wave of uncertainty through the global economy.

On Aug 7, Trump imposed higher tariffs on imports from dozens of countries, leaving major trade partners like Switzerland, Brazil and India scrambling for a better deal, while the EU struck a deal that set duties at 15 per cent on most EU goods imported into the United States.
