This was after his press conference on how he intends to put local bodegas out of business (while he and his elitist friends continue to shop at Whole Foods) so that the empty storefronts will make it easier for his allies to seize the properties while the people who voted for him find themselves being dependent on him for food (I’m paraphrasing).

A federal appellate court recently rejected First Amendment and vagueness challenges to an Ohio parental-consent statute that limits minors’ access to social media platforms “reasonably anticipated to be accessed by children.” The Sixth Circuit’s divided decision in NetChoice v. Yost is an unusual setback for NetChoice, an internet trade association that won a similar battle in June. The appellate court’s ruling vacates a 2025 lower court opinion blocking enforcement of the statute, which forbids Ohioans under age 16 from creating accounts on regulated platforms unless they obtain verifiable parental or guardian consent.

Yost, in which the two judges who sided with Ohio didn’t always agree with each other, is troubling for several reasons. One is its exceedingly deferential interpretation—in Ohio’s favor—of the evidence about harms platforms supposedly cause minors. As Techdirt’s Mike Masnick explained, “The first few pages of the decision are nothing but cherry-picked, out-of-context horror stories about what social media does to kids—with no mention of the substantial corresponding evidence that the picture is far more complicated than that.”

Another problem is how Judge Eric Clay determined Ohio’s statute survived the typically fatal strict scrutiny standard of judicial review. He did so by arguably misinterpreting and dubiously distinguishing the US Supreme Court’s formidable Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association decision. I’ve previously explained that the Court in Brown applied strict scrutiny to invalidate a California parental-consent statute restricting minors’ access to violent video games.

The state of Alaska has sent over 3,000 letters to voters asking them to verify their US citizenship ahead of the August 18 primary. State officials said that the number of letters sent out was unusually high.

The letter asks those who received it to verify their citizenship via phone, email, or letter, but is not requiring paperwork or documentation, according to Alaska Division of Elections Director Carol Beecher. The election official told state lawmakers that “a lot of old data was picked up somehow” when it was conducting voter roll maintenance this time around. There are usually only about 200 names when the state election division conducts the review.

The 3,048 letters were sent out as the Trump administration has been pushing for more election security ahead of the 2026 midterms with efforts to pass the SAVE America Act. Earlier this week, revelations about New Jersey’s election showed that 6,600 noncitizens were registered to vote, and a preliminary review from the state said that around 400 were able to cast votes in elections.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill blamed the software company that is integrated in the New Jersey DMV system, claiming that a glitch switched tons of noncitizens to being registered to vote. The software company disagreed and said that the fault lies with the state approving noncitizens to vote.

A senior British politician accused the French government of attempted intimidation after a warship made a close pass and commenced a live firing exercise unannounced while he was observing migrant boat crossings in the English Channel.

Conservative Party home affairs spokesman Chris Philp was joined by government-adjacent news outlets on a hired boat in the English Channel on Wednesday morning to record interview pieces about the boat migrant crisis, but was interrupted by a small French warship engaging in what was said to be a live firing exercise. Philip called the shooting an apparent attempt at intimidation by the French, given the sea was otherwise clear of craft, the firing only took place as the French warship was at its closest point of approach to the British boat, and there was no warnings broadcast by radio beforehand.

British state media the BBC, which was interviewing Philp at sea as the firing commenced, caught in their footage the French patrol boat P676 Flamant passing approximately 300 meters to starboard while the Conservative politician delivered a piece to camera, and as the firing began. Coastal patrol boats of the Flamant type, which are mainly for coastal constabulary duties, carry no fixed naval weapons systems but can embark machine guns, and in this case the firing exercise was reported to be a French officer discharging a handgun at a towed target.

Philip told the BBC that the shooting in close proximity to his boat where there was plenty of sea room to exercise elsewhere “felt to me like an attempted intimidation to stop us covering migrant crossings”. He told the broadcaster:

It is extraordinary that the French Navy will fire live rounds to defend their waters against a visiting British politician but cannot bear to do anything about stopping illegal Channel crossings.

If France showed people smugglers half the seriousness they showed me, the boats would stop.

Instead, the French wave them through and pass them off to the British coastguard so it’s our problem.

A Catholic bishop will celebrate Mass at a series of pro-LGBT parish gatherings in Rhode Island while the Diocese of Providence refuses to clarify whether attendees will be called to repentance or offered sacramental confession, in accordance with the Church’s moral teaching.

The Diocese of Providence is holding four parish gatherings for “LGBTQ+ individuals, families, and friends” across Rhode Island, where Bishop Bruce Lewandowski will celebrate the Masses and participate in “small group sharing” sessions for “listening humbly to the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals.”

According to the program published on the diocesan website, the pro-LGBT gatherings are divided into three parts. The first section is a “small group sharing,” in which Lewandowski and other collaborators will listen “humbly” not only to the so-called LGBT Catholics, but also their “families and friends.” The second section is the Holy Mass, celebrated by Lewandowski, and third, “a community dinner provided for all attendees.”

The announcement opens with a well-known quotation from Pope Francis: “Todos, Todos, Todos (Everyone, Everyone, Everyone). That is the Church, the Mother of all. There is room for everyone.”

The planned events have drawn criticism after the Lepanto Institute reported diocesan officials had declined to answer direct questions about how the events square with Church teaching on anthropology and morality.

Early this year, the Trump administration unveiled a new minerals stockpile initiative called “Project Vault,” which prioritizes the development of mines and processing operations for more than 50 minerals deemed critical.

This move comes on top of Trump’s pursuit of new alliances to challenge China’s control over these essential resources. Additionally, the administration has been expediting mine openings, supporting new smelting operations, and exploring deep-sea options for these resources.

These developments are likely not making Chinese officials happy. Subsequently, it should not come as a surprise that China has now imposed new export controls on rare earths bound for this country.

China added MP Materials (MP.N) and USA Rare Earth (USAR.O) as well as eight other ​U.S. entities it said are linked to the U.S. military to its export ‌control list in retaliation for Washington placing several Chinese companies under restrictions this month.

Aveox, a motor manufacturer for mission-critical applications, was also among those placed on the list, which halts Chinese dual-use exports to the companies.

Pentagon-backed ​MP Materials, which operates the only active rare earth mine in the U.S., and ​USA Rare Earth are both involved in the mine-to-magnet supply chain.

USA Rare ⁠Earth said it did not have any comment on the matter. MP Materials and Aveox were ​not available for comment outside of business hours.

The U.S. Army on Sunday revealed it has tested a new warfare system overseas designed to covertly scramble the navigation signals used by enemy precision weapons, making it harder for adversaries to accurately strike targets from long distances while avoiding detection.

The electronic system, dubbed “Hammer of the Gods,” was tested at sea off the U.S. West Coast for the first time in mid-July as part of the Project Convergence Capstone 6 (PC-C6) experiment.

While land-based versions have been demonstrated over the past two years, the exercise marked the official debut of the maritime variant, the Army said.

The portable signal disruptor can reportedly blind enemy to several precision-guided weapons such as long-range artillery, guided missiles and cruise missiles.

The radio signals specifically jam positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) signals, including GPS data, that precision weapons rely on to navigate accurately.

Without reliable PNT data, weapon accuracy drops sharply, increasing the likelihood of delayed missions and missed targets.

The system also creates a resilient communications network that allows friendly forces to stay connected despite heavy electronic jamming.
