“The department has met its burden to establish removability by clear and convincing evidence,” Judge Jamee Comans said, according to The New York Times.

Khalil’s case “now moves on to what is known as the ‘relief stage,’ in which his lawyers will be able to argue for his right to stay in the country. If they lose, they can appeal, first to an immigration board and then to a federal court,” the outlet reported.

The judge gave Khalil’s legal team until April 23 to file a request for relief to prevent his deportation, Axios reported.

The reason, they say, is fear within the Mexican community due to immigration policies under President Donald Trump’s administration. Organizers said they chose to cancel the event to focus on safety rather than profits, ABC 7 reports.

“Our people are scared,” said Hector Escobar, President of the Casa Puebla & Cermak Road Chamber of Commerce. “See, some of them, they don’t even want to go to work and some of them, they’ve taken a high risk. And, definitely, it’s not much to celebrate.”

Since Trump took office, Chicago, which is a sanctuary city, has become a target for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). There has been an increase in deportation activity both in the city and nearby suburbs. That increase has created worry for local businesses in the Little Village neighborhood, where the parade normally begins on Cermak Road.

Even as President Trump’s approval on the economy slips, his support on immigration remains strong.  Americans solidly approve of his mass deportations policy, knowing full well that millions of people were allowed to enter the country illegally under the Biden administration.  Millions of convicted and accused criminals, as well as people with standing deportation orders, are among them.  Quite frankly, these numbers are a good start, but they’re just a start, given what the new president’s team and inherited and the enormity of the resulting task at hand:

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials admitted in a court filing on Monday night to an “administrative error” in deporting the 29-year-old man, generating immediate uproar from immigration advocates.

Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia was arrested on March 12 after completing a shift as a sheet metal worker apprentice at a construction site in Baltimore, according to a complaint filed in federal court by his lawyers.

Abrego Garcia was then sent to a notorious prison in his home country, the Terrorism Confinement Center, or CECOT, which activists say is rife with abuses and where inmates are packed into cells and never allowed outside.

He was placed at CECOT despite an immigration judge’s ruling in 2019 that he not be deported to El Salvador because he had established it was “more likely than not that he would be persecuted by gangs,” according to his lawyer’s complaint.

Abrego Garcia “left El Salvador when he was around sixteen years old, fleeing gang violence,” according to the complaint. “Beginning around 2006, gang members had stalked, hit, and threatened to kidnap and kill him in order to coerce his parents to succumb to their increasing demands for extortion.”

Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Kilmer Armado Abrego-Garcia, who is married to a U.S. citizen and has a 5-year-old child, was mistakenly a part of three planes with Venezuelan deportees to the Salvadoran Terrorism Confinement Center last month. The filing appears to be the first time the administration has admitted a mistake during the legal fight over President Donald Trump’s decision to invoke the Alien Enemies Act to justify the deportation of over 100 Venezuelan nationals.

“Although ICE was aware of his protection from removal to El Salvador, Abrego-Garcia was removed to El Salvador because of an administrative error,” an ICE official said in a court filing.

While the government acknowledged the error, it said that because Abrego-Garcia is no longer in U.S. custody, the court cannot order him to be returned to the U.S., nor can the court order El Salvador to return him.

In 2019, Abrego-Garcia was deemed by an immigration judge to be a likely member of the MS-13 gang based in Los Angeles, which Abrego-Garcia has repeatedly contested. As Signalgate fades into obscurity, joining the long list of failed attempts to manufacture a Trump administration scandal, The Atlantic has a new problem. A new Trump hit piece it published this week has been exposed as a lie.

The mainstream media is scrambling to discredit Trump’s mass deportation policy, pushing the false narrative that, despite the administration’s focus on removing criminal illegal aliens first, innocent people are being swept up alongside illegal alien gang members and felons.

Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor of The Atlantic, has a track record of publishing bogus hit pieces on Trump. In 2020, he pushed a debunked claim that Trump called fallen soldiers “losers” and “suckers,” which even he later admitted might be false. In 2024, he spread another false story about Trump being upset over a soldier’s funeral bill — dismissed by other journalists but still published by The Atlantic. His history of dishonest reporting makes skepticism of his work not only justified but necessary.

On Monday, The Atlantic jumped on the innocents-swept-up angle, publishing a piece that claimed, “The Trump administration acknowledged in a court filing Monday that it had grabbed a Maryland father with protected legal status and mistakenly deported him to El Salvador.”

Court filings show Abrego Garcia came to the United States at age 16 in 2011 after fleeing gang threats in his native El Salvador. Washington — The Trump administration’s crackdown on students who participated in pro-Palestinian activities have raised questions about the First Amendment rights of visa and green card holders amid the shocking detentions of a number of students at Tufts, Columbia and other universities in recent weeks.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio cited a provision in the Immigration and Nationality Act that authorizes the nation’s top diplomat to revoke the visas of foreign national students on the grounds that their presence or activities have “potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences” for the U.S.

The federal government is not required to lay out proof beyond that explanation, legal experts told CBS News, setting up a legal showdown over foreign nationals’ free speech rights in the U.S.

“There’s a tension between everyone’s First Amendment rights to free speech and the immigration statute’s broad provisions giving the secretary of state broad latitude to declare someone deportable simply because he thinks that the student may have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences.
