Ukraine’s parliament on Thursday was set to vote on ratifying a resources deal with the United States that Kyiv hopes will pave the way to further military support. The deal, signed last week in Washington, will see Washington and Kyiv jointly develop Ukraine’s natural resources and minerals.Securing a fresh agreement was seen as a diplomatic success for Kyiv, coming after a White House clash between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy that derailed an original deal that was ready to be signed.”We hope we will successfully complete the ratification today,”

Despite warnings from European Union officials, Slovakia’s Moscow-friendly prime minister, Robert Fico, shook hands with Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin before becoming the only EU leader to attend Russia’s 9 May parade of military forces waging war on Ukraine.

The Serbian president, Aleksandar Vučić, whose country aspires to join the 27-nation bloc, also accepted the Russian president’s invitation to attend the annual Victory Day celebrations marking the defeat of Nazi Germany in the second world war.

The pair were the only European leaders to travel to Moscow after strong injunctions from EU officials not to do so. On Thursday, the bloc’s chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, said: “All those who truly support peace cannot stand side-by-side with Putin. Those who truly support peace should be in Ukraine tomorrow, not Moscow.”

Ukrainian drone attacks across Russia triggered hours of travel chaos late Tuesday and early Wednesday, with repeated airport closures in Moscow and its surrounding regions.

Aviation authorities grounded flights at Moscow’s Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Zhukovsky airports, as well as in the cities of Nizhny Novgorod, Kirov, Yaroslavl, Kazan and others, warning of possible cancellations.

“The restrictions were imposed to ensure the safety of civil aircraft flights,” said Artyom Korenyako, a spokesperson for Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency.

Major airlines, including Aeroflot, Pobeda and S7, told passengers to expect disruptions and announced the cancelations of hundreds of flight for Tuesday and Wednesday. S7 promised to issue a full refund for passengers with canceled flights or exchange tickets for other flights if there are available seats.

The financial payoff from a new minerals deal between Ukraine and the US is likely to take a decade or longer as investors face many hurdles to getting new mines into production in the war-ravaged country.

Developing mines that produce strategically important minerals in countries with established mining sectors such as Canada and Australia can take 10 to 20 years, mining consultants said on Thursday.

But most mineral deposits in Ukraine have scant data to confirm they are economically viable. Investors may also baulk at funnelling money into a country where infrastructure such as power and transport has been devastated by Russia’s three-year-old full-scale invasion and future security is not guaranteed.

“If anyone’s thinking suddenly all these minerals are going to be flying out of Ukraine, they’re dreaming,” said Adam Webb, head of minerals at consultancy Benchmark Minerals Intelligence.

US President Donald Trump on Sunday said Russia and Ukraine could reach an agreement “this week,” possibly to end their war of more than three years. He also said the two rivals could then do “big business” with the United States and “make a fortune.”

“Hopefully Russia amd (sic) Ukraine will make a deal this week. Both will then start to do big business with the United States of America, which is thriving, and make a big fortune!” Trump posted to his Truth Social network.

However, he did not share details of any progress in peace talks Washington has sought to push forward between Moscow and Kyiv, since he took over from Joe Biden in January.
The US president’s Truth Social post comes just days after his secretary of state, Marco Rubio, warned that Washington could “move on” from its push to broker an agreement to end the conflict, which began in February 2022.
“We need to figure out here now within a matter of days whether this is doable in the short term, because if it’s not, then I think we’re just going to move on,” Rubio said on Friday in Paris, after high-level discussions with European and Ukrainian leaders.

A Russian propagandist has taken to state TV to issue a direct threat of nuclear war against the UK, as well as Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s coalition of the willing

Vladimir Solovyov threatened the West with nuclear war(Image: (Image: Getty))

Vladimir Putin’s mouthpiece has threatened Sir Keir Starmer and his “coalition of the willing” with nuclear warfare. Vladimir Solovyov, a well-known conduit for the Russian leader’s rhetoric and an avid commentator on Russia’s involvement in Ukraine, delivered the dire warning as a retort to Western media narratives and European countries’ aid to Ukraine.

During his ‘Sunday Evening With Vladimir Solovyov’ broadcast, the figurehead of Kremlin thinking declared the UK and US “are directly waging war against us”.

And in a direct threat to the West, he warned world leaders they would “feel their consequences” the same as the soldiers on the frontline.

Ukraine was never promised NATO membership as part of any potential settlement of its conflict with Russia, the military bloc’s secretary general, Mark Rutte, has said. He made the remarks in an interview with the broadcaster MI Ukraina while on a surprise trip to Ukraine on Tuesday.

Rutte said that while Kiev’s Western backers have stated Ukraine would “one day” become a member of NATO, “no one promised Ukraine that NATO membership would be part of the peace agreement.”

Russia has long cited Kiev’s ambitions to join NATO, which Moscow views as an overtly hostile bloc, as one of the reasons for launching its military operation in 2022.

Ukrainian neutrality remains a key demand from the Kremlin for reaching a peace deal, along with demilitarization, denazification, and recognition of the territorial realities on the ground. Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, however, has insisted that membership or “NATO-like security guarantees” be included in any agreement.

First Adam Schiff. Now Letitia James.

New York Attorney General Letitia James is investigating possible insider trading linked to President Trump’s 90-day tariff pause.

As reported by CNN:

New York Attorney General Letitia James is looking into potential insider trading by Trump administration officials and associates around last week’s 90-day tariff pause, James’ office confirmed to CNN on Monday.

The review is in its earliest stages and is not yet a full investigation. It’s unclear if it will ultimately uncover evidence of wrongdoing.

Some lawmakers have raised concerns about the potential for insider trading around Trump’s tariff announcement. However, no smoking gun has been revealed signaling wrongdoing.

Last Wednesday, President Trump took to Truth Social to calm fears amid his tariff blitz and the market drop.

“BE COOL! Everything is going to work out well. The USA will be bigger and better than ever before!” Trump wrote last Wednesday morning.

A few minutes later, President Trump said it was a good time to buy since the markets were down.

Russia’s grisly Palm Sunday attack on the city of Sumy has focused attention on the northern Ukrainian region where Kyiv says an expected Russian spring offensive is already under way. Experts say the push into Sumy is aimed at stretching Ukraine’s defensive lines and projecting an image of Russian progress on the front – even as Moscow’s war of attrition in the east grinds to a bloody stalemate.

The postponement is reportedly linked in part to discussions over the future of the sabotaged Nord Stream pipelines

The EU will once again delay plans to eliminate its dependence on Russian energy, amid ongoing debates within the bloc over the future of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, the Financial Times has reported.

Nord Stream 1, which once delivered Russian natural gas to Germany, and Nord Stream 2 were damaged in a sabotage attack in 2022. However, one string of Nord Stream 2 remains intact. Talks of potentially reviving the pipelines have resurfaced amid recent joint efforts by Russia and the US to end the Ukraine conflict.

Originally slated for release in February, a roadmap detailing steps for cutting the EU’s energy reliance on Russia by 2027 was first put off until March and is now expected to be unveiled in May, the outlet said on Tuesday.

On 15 April, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service Head Sergey Naryshkin accused NATO of escalating military activity near Russia’s borders. He warned that Poland and the Baltic states would be the first to suffer in the event of a war between Moscow and the Alliance, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that Russia plans to train and station up to 150,000 additional troops in Belarus this year. He has emphasized that these forces could be used not only to attack Ukraine again but also to threaten NATO countries, including the Baltic states and Poland. In response to this growing threat, the Baltic countries and Poland are increasing their defense spending and preparing their borders by laying minefields and strengthening fortifications.

German chemical companies and French utility firms have both suggested the necessity of importing cheap Russian energy

Germany’s chemical industry is in a “severe crisis” and in dire need of a return to cheap Russian gas, Reuters reported on Monday, citing executives in the sector. French energy majors Engie and Total have also told the agency that they could see a restart of imports of  hydrocarbon from Russia.

With a turnover of €225.5 billion in 2023, chemicals and pharmaceuticals are Germany’s third-largest industry, behind automotive and machinery and equipment, according to the European Chemical Industry Council.

The EU committed to eliminating Russian gas imports by 2027, following the escalation of conflict between Kiev and Moscow three years ago. Brussels aimed  to replace them with more expensive  liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar and the United States.

EU foreign ministers are meeting in Luxembourg this morning to discuss the key challenges facing the bloc in foreign affairs, with Ukraine top of the pile.

Reeling from the shock of Russia’s Palm Sunday’s attack on Sumy, which killed at least 34 and injured more than 100, the leaders will discuss what more they can do to help Ukraine deter Russian aggression.

We saw strong political reactions already on Sunday. French president Emmanuel Macron blamed Moscow for “blatant disregard for human lives, international law, and the diplomatic efforts of president Trump.”

Incoming German chancellor Friedrich Merz accused Russia of “serious war crimes” and “perfidy” in the way the attack was conducted. Polish prime minister Donald Tusk said the attack represented “the Russian version of a ceasefire.”

On arrivals this morning, the language of top foreign policy chiefs was similarly clear. EU’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas said it only served as a reminder of the importance of supporting Ukraine “to put maximum pressure on Russia” as the Vladimir Putin continues to reject the ceasefire offer.

It’s a feature of today’s warfare, especially in the war in Ukraine, that there are no ‘safe places’ in the rear, since artillery, drones, missiles and air raids can get to targets anywhere, anytime.

That was the case of Sunday’s attack in the Ukrainian region of Sumy, where two powerful explosions were followed by a thick column of smoke rising into the sky, as two ballistic missile strikes reportedly strike the congress center of Sumy State University.

Needless to say, both Kiev regime’s leader Volodymyr Zelensky, his handlers France’s Emmanuel Macron and UK’s Keir Starmer, as well as some MSM vehicles, called an attack on a peaceful civilian gathering, ‘an Easter celebration’.

The problem is that they forgot to silence their own Ukrainian politicians and officials, that have already denounced: the missile strike was carried out on the place where militants of the 117th territorial defense brigade were receiving awards in a widely advertised ceremony.
