The organization has around a dozen locations and spans several states. Its largest congregation is based in Hinesville, Georgia.

Denis’ first and last names are unknown. Investigators allege he used a stolen identity to become a U.S. citizen in 2002 before going on to establish HOPCC and its affiliate House of Prayer Bible Seminary (HOPBS).

Authorities alleged that Denis and his associates used the organization and its affiliated seminaries to defraud the Department of Veterans Affairs of millions in education benefits between 2011 and 2022.

“Today’s coordinated arrests of individuals connected to the House of Prayer Christian Churches of America and House of Prayer Bible Seminary effectively disrupts a calculated scheme to defraud our military service members and veterans of their hard-earned VA benefits,” said Special Agent in Charge Ryan O’Connor of the Department of Army Criminal Investigative Division’s Southern Field Office.

At 11 a.m. ET, it was known that the shooter was dead, and it was known that many were injured, although the exact number or if any were dead had been unreported. Christians in Nigeria have faced sporadic persecution since the 1950s, but the past 25 years have seen a wave of violence that is swiftly becoming a slow-motion genocide. Despite that, the international community has for the most part turned a deliberate blind eye on the weekly killings; when pressed for comment, everything from conflicts over grazing land to climate change have been cited as the real reasons behind the ongoing persecution. 

Persecution of Christians in Nigeria began to spike after 1999, when 12 northern states adopted Sharia law; the rise of the terrorist group Boko Haram in 2009 marked a dramatic escalation. Famously, Boko Haram kidnapped hundreds of schoolgirls in 2014. Christian girls were targeted for forced conversion and marriage to Muslim fighters; 87 of the girls are still cited as “missing” 11 years later.

Illinois Democrat Gov. JB Pritzker signed two new laws Friday to further aid the abortion industry, one spreading abortion pills on college campuses and another solidifying the state as a “safe haven” from pro-life laws.

HB3709 makes abortion and contraception pills available on Illinois college campuses and removes “approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration” from the definition of “emergency contraception.” HB3637 shields abortion providers from out-of-state prosecutions for helping facilitate abortions in pro-life states.
