What just happened? As almost every new day brings stories of another AI agent going rogue and breaching an organization’s systems, OpenAI has announced a pause in the training of its most powerful artificial intelligence models. The announcement came hours after the company disclosed more incidents of its agents acting concerningly, and a separate report that its agents unsuccessfully tried to hack into a US Department of Education website.

OpenAI’s incident report links the pause to a separate September 20 escape from a restricted training environment. An internal research model found a gap in DNS filtering and used it to contact an external chatbot while attempting to answer a research question – so much for keeping it offline.

The company says the suspension covers training, evaluations, and running its most capable models with tools. Work will resume after OpenAI validates its fixes and completes additional adversarial testing. The particular model involved will not resume training; the company plans a fresh run with additional alignment improvements.

The monitoring system did raise an alert within 15 minutes, which a human acknowledged three minutes later. Unfortunately, the automatic shutdown failed to happen, and the run continued for another two and a half hours before someone stopped it manually.

Separately, Transluce reported that agents apparently linked to OpenAI attempted to break into the US Education Department’s civil rights website. OpenAI has not confirmed that incident, while the department said it found no evidence its website or databases were affected.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — OpenAI disclosed Friday that its artificial intelligence agents had interacted with several U.S. government websites in unexpected ways, discovered as part of an ongoing review into the company’s models’ unanticipated behavior.

The AI giant’s models accessed publicly available information on two websites operated by the Securities and Exchange Commission as well as U.S. Census Bureau data, the company revealed Friday. OpenAI did not find any use of SEC credentials, access to accounts or nonpublic information, changes to SEC data or systems, or evidence of a compromise or vulnerability, the company said.

The disclosure comes at a time of heightened global concerns about AI systems escaping human control and hacking into external websites, as well as industry calls for a slowdown on AI development, which OpenAI has said it supports.

OpenAI spokesperson Liz Bourgeois said in a statement that the lab is continuing to conduct a review of “misaligned model activity” — meaning when AI systems behave in undesired ways — and is notifying organizations when it identifies potential impacts to their systems.

Google has confirmed that its Gemini artificial intelligence model escaped a closed cybersecurity testing environment, accessed the public internet, and broke into the systems of three real companies.

The disturbing breaches occurred in May during testing conducted by AI security firm Irregular but were not revealed to the public until September.

The incidents were only confirmed after The Wall Street Journal contacted Google.

Gemini was supposed to participate in a “capture the flag” hacking exercise targeting a fictional company contained inside a secure test environment.

Instead, the sandbox failed.

Gemini gained internet access it was never supposed to have.

After discovering that the fictional company shared its name with a real business, the AI began targeting live systems.

FBI Director Kash Patel Says AI Is Helping Stop School Shooting Plots › American Greatness– amgreatness.com

FBI Director Kash Patel said Saturday that the bureau has dramatically expanded its use of artificial intelligence, including deploying the technology to help prevent potential school shootings.

Patel said the FBI has used AI-assisted tools to identify threats and intervene before attacks could take place, pointing to a school shooting plot in North Carolina that authorities thwarted after receiving a tip through AI software.

“We’ve done it in North Carolina and about half a dozen other states to prevent school shootings since I’ve been in the seat,” Patel said on Fox News. “AI, when used lawfully, is a critical tool to triage data. For far too long the institutional morass in D.C. rejected the advancements of technology.”

Patel said the bureau’s adoption of the technology has accelerated substantially under his leadership.

“I have increased the use of AI in the FBI by 605 percent,” Patel said.

Patel said the bureau plans to work with its partners to examine databases, collect information and DNA, and quickly provide threat information to agents in the field.

The objective, Patel said, is to “stop people from killing children at schools.”

ChatGPT Erases Past, Hides Previous Response Comparing Trump to Hitler– www.newsbusters.org

EXCERPT:

OpenAI’s ChatGPT attempted to bury the evidence that  it compared President Donald Trump to notorious Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, who murdered six million Jews and started World War II.

MRC researchers found that requests for ChatGPT to locate and provide a link to a Sept. 3 Fox News article about MRC’s study were an exercise in futility. In one chat session on Sept. 9, ChatGPT refused to acknowledge the existence of a Fox News article about ChatGPT comparing Trump and Hitler, even after being told who wrote it. Throughout the chat session, the AI model repeatedly deflected from direct questions and denied that it had previously compared Trump to Hitler.

ChatGPT’s dodge comes at a time when OpenAI is being widely accused by Trump administration officials, Republican members of Congress and many conservative activists — claiming that the company has politicized the potential threat of AI just weeks before the 2026 midterm elections.

When asked directly if it could find the Fox News article in which ChatGPT compared Trump to Hitler, the AI model dissembled instead: “I can’t browse past conversations or retrieve specific articles, but I can search for current news or reports related to the comparison you mentioned.” When pressed again, it went even further, explaining that it “couldn’t find any instances where I have made such comparisons.”

As more and more users turn to AI to quickly and easily distill information, ChatGPT’s erasure of its own blunder becomes increasingly concerning. “ChatGPT’s alarming responses show that bias and censorship continue to be the most pressing dangers associated with developing artificial intelligence models,” said MRC Free Speech Director Michael Morris. “When AI models overwhelmingly rely on elitist media and left-wing so-called academic institutions for their inputs, it’s little wonder that their outputs are so often anti-conservative, anti-Republican and anti-American. It’s high time that American AI companies stop rigging the technology to suppress freedom.”

House Democrats Target Data Center Tax Breaks as Trump Pushes AI Expansion › American Greatness– amgreatness.com

House Democrats are moving to prevent data centers from receiving certain federal tax incentives, obstructing the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Reps. Kristen McDonald Rivet, D-Mich., and Don Davis, D-N.C., introduced legislation Wednesday that would exclude data centers from specified federal investment incentives. The proposal has support from 21 additional House Democrats, according to information released with the legislation.

The opposition comes as President Donald Trump’s administration has made expanding American AI infrastructure a national priority. Trump signed an executive order in July 2025 directing federal agencies to accelerate permitting for qualifying data center projects and identifying potential financial support including loans, grants and tax incentives.

The White House’s AI Action Plan also calls for streamlining permits for data centers, semiconductor plants and supporting energy infrastructure as part of an effort to strengthen U.S. competitiveness in artificial intelligence.

Democrats behind the new legislation argue that federal incentives should not subsidize large technology companies while households face concerns about utility bills and other living expenses.

Barack Hussein Obama told Democrats: They badly need to grab hold of the debate over artificial intelligence and impeding its progress a central pillar of their agenda.

Of course he did. There is one infallible rule in 211st century American politics – anything the Democrats are behind and pushing, is disastrous for America. Every time.

Thus: The sudden pressing of the “panic” button by talking heads on the left. New York Times: Former President Barack Obama warned during a recent private fund-raising event that artificial intelligence technology could be “dangerous” if not properly managed, as he implored Democrats to aggressively develop political and governing agendas to prioritize the issue in the coming years. In his remarks on Thursday, which have not been previously reported, Mr. Obama urged Hakeem Jeffries, Democrat of New York and the House minority leader, to assemble a clear framework for a public conversation about A.I. policy, should Democrats win back the House in the midterm elections, according to a partial transcript provided by Mr. Obama’s office (New York Times).

Politico adds: Obama said AI development would be “one of my central agendas” if he were running for president, throwing down a gauntlet as the shadow 2028 Democratic primary debate responded to the AI leaders’ calls (Politico).

Make no mistake, Communist China is not slowing down and they are making huge gain using American (much of it stolen) technology. Why would we deliberately handicap ourselves while Communist China races ahead, weaponizing artificial intelligence for military power, mass surveillance, cyberwarfare and global domination?

Democrats have been so good at handling everything they focus on, so I know they can come up with sensible ways to implement AI.

It is surprising that the Biden-Harris administration and other Democrats didn’t solve this program while they were in office because Biden put Kamala in charge of the issue in 2023. Back then, Kamala led a meeting with tech leaders in 2023 to address the issue because the vigorous and sharp Biden needed to lighten his busy schedule:

Kamala is now lecturing Trump about what he must do to control China and handle AI. Kamala’s brilliance and expertise on the issue can be summed up in her statement introducing the issue:

“I think the first part of this issue that should be articulated is AI is kind of a fancy thing,” Harris said. “First of all, it’s two letters. It means artificial intelligence, but ultimately what it is is it’s about machine learning.”

President Trump turned a live tech interview into a must-see political moment Monday when he called Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in the middle of Huang’s appearance at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles.

Huang put the call on speaker. The president then delivered a blunt message to a room packed with technology leaders: America cannot let fear, red tape, or a wave of AI doomsday predictions hand the future to China.

The full exchange shows Trump joking with Huang before driving straight into the fight over AI, data centers, and American leadership:

Trump said the idea that robots are about to take over the world has been turned into a political and economic “hoax.” He argued that the people pushing America to slow down are giving Beijing exactly the opening it wants.

“The happiest group is China,” Trump told the room. He warned that American companies are already looking abroad when permitting and infrastructure obstacles make major projects harder to build here at home.

Trump Slams Anthropic CEO Who Sounded Alarm About AI Threats– www.dailysignal.com

EXCERPT:

President Donald Trump wrote off calls for guardrails on artificial intelligence in a Monday Truth Social post, slamming Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for sounding the alarm on the dangers posed by rapidly developing AI.

“The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!” Trump said. “The Trump Administration has stopped AI ‘people’ from doing bad, or potentially bad, ‘things,’ like Dario (Anthropic!), who is now pretending to be a ‘perfect little angel’ – and we will continue to do so!”

Over the weekend, Amodei wrote that “we must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models.”

“Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain,” he said.

Fears about the future of AI have been boiling up after Anthropic employee Jacob Coxon resigned from Anthropic, saying “We’re on track for a lot of the most aggressive of these scenarios where by the end of next year things could be out of control already.” Another Anthropic employee, Evan Hubinger, chimed in that “We really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans!”

Scammers are teaching AI to sound like you, and research says our brains are falling for it– www.digitaltrends.com

The next scam call you receive may not sound like a robot, a call center, or even someone pretending to be your relative. AI voice generators have become capable of reproducing regional accents and dialects that sound convincing enough that researchers are warning they could become a potent social-engineering tool.

For example, a scammer could use an accent familiar to a targeted community to make a suspicious call sound considerably more trustworthy.

Research from Abertay University examined synthetic versions of Scottish Standard English and Dundonian Scots, a regional dialect spoken around Dundee. The study found people frequently assumed AI-generated speech was human, with that bias becoming even more concerning when regional dialects come into the conversation, which isn’t something people expect a machine to reproduce.

Another 2026 study, published in the Journal of Marketing Research, points to why that matters for scams. Researchers analyzed 7,002 entrepreneur-investor combinations from Shark Tank, 2,091 Kickstarter campaigns, and several laboratory experiments.

GENEVA: The United Nations rights chief called on Monday (Sep 14) for countries and “frontier” artificial intelligence companies to act urgently to rein in a technology he warned posed “unprecedented risks”.

In a letter sent to countries and AI developers and shared with the media, Volker Turk cautioned that the world was “on the cusp of irreversible change, affecting not just us but generations of humanity to come”.

“The current race towards ever more powerful AI is a step change towards greater existential risks to every aspect of our lives.”

He sent the letter at a time when worries over the risks of “superintelligent” computer systems have been on full display, after a researcher publicly resigned from leading AI firm Anthropic over fears that the technology could escape human control.

Another Anthropic employee, who did not resign, stated publicly that “we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans”, and that he thought the chances were greater than “10 per cent within the next decade”.

Starting this Sunday, the EU’s new AI Act begins to take effect, which includes key provisions empowering the EU to regulate AI models and apply fines to companies that fall out of compliance. The law also gives the EU investigatory powers to penalize non-cooperating companies and individuals.

The Act itself presents a challenge to AI geopolitical realities of power as nations and associations like the EU attempt to use domestic laws to affect foreign AI powers. For instance, the fines countries give to foreign companies doing business in their territory due to non-compliance with their AI rules could become weapons of war in the AI geopolitical reality of power.

The European Union will begin enforcing key provisions of its AI Act from Sunday, empowering regulators to oversee AI models and fine companies that violate the bloc’s rules.

The European Union will take a major step in regulating artificial intelligence from Sunday, when authorities gain the power to enforce key provisions of the bloc’s landmark AI Act. The move allows regulators to oversee advanced AI systems, order corrective measures and impose significant financial penalties on companies that fail to comply with the law.

The AI Act, adopted by the European Union in 2024, is being rolled out in phases and follows a risk-based framework.

Under the legislation, AI systems considered to pose greater risks to people’s rights or health face stricter obligations designed to safeguard individuals.

The law also prohibits the use of AI for predictive policing, emotion recognition systems in workplaces or schools, and technologies that manipulate human behaviour.

Democratic fundraising consultants working for Senate campaigns, including those of Sen. Jacky Rosen and Rep. Haley Stevens, also run a nonprofit backed in part by Google and Amazon that has become one of the AI industry’s primary channels for cultivating relationships with the congressional staff overseeing federal AI legislation.

The Innovative Future Collective (IFC), founded by Democratic fundraising consultants Ashley Kennedy and Tonya Fulkerson, has spent the past year flying congressional aides on industry-guided tours of Google, Meta, Amazon, Palantir, Anduril, and other companies at the center of the AI industry’s campaign to shape federal AI policy, including its push to preempt state AI regulation. The nonprofit describes the trips, built around briefings from company policy executives for committee counsels and chiefs of staff overseeing AI legislation, as “educational,” and told Sludge in March that it “does not engage in advocacy.”

Though IFC does not disclose its donors, two companies whose executives regularly participate in its congressional programs, Google and Amazon, have identified IFC among the political and policy organizations they fund in their own public political-engagement disclosures.

Kennedy and Fulkerson own Fulkerson Kennedy & Company (FK&Co.), a political fundraising firm that has been paid nearly $3 million this election cycle for fundraising consulting services by Democratic campaigns and committees, according to Federal Election Commission records. Its clients include Sens. Chris Coons, Jacky Rosen, and Martin Heinrich; Reps. Chris Pappas and Haley Stevens, who are running for open Senate seats; and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. IFC’s first federal tax filing, covering 2025, shows the nonprofit paid $179,079 back to FK&Co. for “management, staffing, and fundraising services.”

EU will require companies to label AI-generated content starting Sunday– www.techspot.com
News Source
EXCERPT:

The takeaway: Companies operating in the European Union are now subject to a new requirement: clearly label content created or altered by artificial intelligence. Beginning Sunday, the EU’s latest transparency rules take effect, covering everything from chatbot responses to AI-generated images, audio, and video. The aim is simple: users should be able to tell, without guessing, whether what they are seeing or hearing is real or machine-generated.

The rule is part of the EU’s broader artificial intelligence law, which is being rolled out in phases. This first step focuses on disclosure. If content is generated by AI or significantly manipulated by it, companies must make that clear. That includes adding visible labels as well as technical markers, such as watermarks or embedded metadata, that help identify synthetic material.

The push comes as deepfakes and other AI-generated media become more convincing and easier to produce. Regulators are particularly concerned about how quickly this content can spread and how difficult it has become to determine what is real.

The requirements apply mainly to content created in professional contexts. Material designed to inform the public about matters of general interest must carry a label if it is produced by AI without human editorial oversight. At the same time, the EU has carved out exceptions. Individuals using AI for personal purposes are not covered, and exemptions exist for “artistic, creative, satirical, fictional” works.
