The suspect charged with setting Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s home on fire allegedly did so because of what the Jewish governor would “do to the Palestinian people.”

Cody Balmer told a 911 dispatcher over the phone why he lit Shaprio’s Harrisburg home on fire with his family inside in the hours of Passover night, PennLive reported, citing a search warrant. A district attorney has said the evidence could result in hate crime charges in a case that is sparking concerns about rising threats to government officials.

The warrant describes Balmer saying he “will not take part in [Shapiro’s] plans for what he wants to do to the Palestinian people,” PennLive reported. The suspect also allegedly said the governor needed to “stop having [his] friends killed” and that “our people have been put through too much by that monster.” The warrant reportedly said Balmer attacked the pro-Israel governor over his Jewish faith without elaborating.

Russia’s grisly Palm Sunday attack on the city of Sumy has focused attention on the northern Ukrainian region where Kyiv says an expected Russian spring offensive is already under way. Experts say the push into Sumy is aimed at stretching Ukraine’s defensive lines and projecting an image of Russian progress on the front – even as Moscow’s war of attrition in the east grinds to a bloody stalemate.

Researchers have unraveled the complex network that cells use to repair their genetic material.

By examining thousands upon thousands of genetic interactions, the team has discovered new vulnerabilities in cancer cells that could be exploited therapeutically in the future.

The DNA of human cells consists of a sequence of about 3.1 billion building blocks. Cells go to great lengths to maintain the integrity of this vast store of information. They constantly untangle knots in the DNA strand and create new chemical bonds when a strand of DNA breaks somewhere in the nucleus.

“When people read about repairing genetic material, they often think of it being in response to exposure to toxins or radiation,” says Jacob Corn, professor of genome biology at ETH Zurich.

However, repair mechanisms not only defend against external threats; they also play a crucial role in helping cells survive the challenges they face in their daily fight for survival.

The Trump administration has expanded the power of adviser Elon Musk’s government-cutting team over the State Department, making a Musk lieutenant acting head of foreign assistance.

A senior U.S. official confirmed the new job for Jeremy Lewin, an associate of the Department of Government Efficiency earlier appointed to help finish dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development. The official was not authorized to comment publicly on a personnel matter and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The move comes as President Donald Trump’s administration is pushing to greatly reduce what in 2024 was $52 billion in humanitarian, health and development programs overseas by the State Department and USAID. Lewin’s appointment gives Musk’s team, which has worked with the Republican administration to make deep cuts to government programs and services, one of its highest formal positions in the federal government.

President Donald Trump received mixed reviews from the public regarding his handling of economic matters, according to a new poll.

A CBS survey polled voters last week after Trump imposed sweeping global tariffs and then negotiated “fairer” trade deals with foreign countries to carry out his “America First” agenda. As a result, the stock market had a volatile week, losing $6 trillion at one point. It has since recuperated partially, though market anxieties remain.

The survey highlighted conflicting feedback from the public. When asked about the impact of Trump’s tariffs, some voters said they raised prices in the short term but could pay off with a healthier economy in the future. However, 65% of voters said they would make the economy worse in the short term. That number fell to 42% when voters were asked about the long-term implications of the tariffs. Only 8% said the tariffs would make the economy better in the short term, compared to 34% who believe Trump’s trade policies would help the economy in the long term.

Democrat minority leader Hakeem Jeffries is threatening the Trump administration to bring back illegal alien gangbangers into the country or face consequences.

Pelosi’s angels.

Democrats have a long history of defending violent, illegal alien gangbangers.

Former Democrat Leader Nancy Pelosi defended MS-13 in 2018 saying they were “God’s children…” and, “There’s a spark of divinity in every person.”

MS13’s motto is, “Kill, rape, control.”

That won’t keep Democrats from defending this brutal and evil multi-national gang.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that, as of today, a Real ID would be needed to fly anywhere in the country. This has been coming for ages now, but there are still a lot of people very upset about it.

I’m mostly ambivalent on the topic myself because I didn’t have a choice about getting one, but many screaming about them seem a tad selective in their outrage.

See, there are a lot of arguments against this out there, but one is that these requirements are burdensome and problematic for poorer Americans.

Of course, as someone who has lived more than a little lean in the income department a good chunk of my adult life, I’m not entirely sure where poor folks are flying to and from, because tickets on flights aren’t exactly cheap most of the time.

Yet there’s something else that seems to raise some questions about that line of reasoning, and that was framed pretty well by Second Amendment attorney Kostas Moros.

El Salvadoran President Nayib Armando Bukele said Monday that he has no intention of returning alleged MS-13 gang member Abrego Garcia back to the United States.

Garcia, 29, was among the hundreds of illegal immigrants—a large percentage of them MS-13 and Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang members —expelled from the U.S. to El Salvador last month.

The Trump administration acknowledged in court records that it made an “administrative error” when it deported Garcia without an interview, but has insisted that he has no legal status in the United States.

Garcia crossed the border illegally in 2012 and after he was detained in 2019, claimed he had to flee El Salvador as a teenager to escape gang violence. Both the original immigration judge and the Board of Immigration Appeals found there was sufficient evidence that Garcia was a member of MS-13 and, as such, a danger to the public.

More than half of Americans believe that billionaire businessman Elon Musk has too much influence over the federal government under President Donald Trump, according to the findings of a new national poll. The survey also found a sharp division along party and ideological lines.

Fifty-six percent of Americans believe that Musk has too much influence, while only 6% believe he has too little influence, according to the findings of the latest UMass Amherst National Poll.

Similarly, 56% believe both technology companies and Wall Street have too much influence over the government. Fifty-nine percent reported holding the same belief about health insurance companies.

Over the course of April 7-13, cargo handled by China has dropped by 9.7 percent.

Cargo going through ports in China has dropped by 9.7 percent in the second week of April, indicating that tariffs implemented by the Trump administration have been hammering the country’s exports to the US.

Over the course of April 7-13, cargo traffic dropped by 9.7 percent to 244 million tons, according to the Wall Street Journal. The week prior, when President Donald Trump implemented his reciprocal tariffs, there was only a drop of 0.88 percent.

Container throughput dropped by 6.1 percent, the Journal reported, reversing an increase of 1.9 percent the week prior. The outlet reports that there has been a steady increase in port volumes since January 2025, and the last couple weeks have seen that reverse.

President Donald Trump has officially urged Congress to begin the process of pulling federal taxpayer funding from left-wing media outlets NPR and PBS.

The New York Post reported Monday that Trump’s White House budget director Russ Vought drafted a memo asking GOP lawmakers to cut the funding.

The memo requests Congress to slash $1.1 billion allotted to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), as well as $8.3 billion that was allotted to USAID.

In the memo, Vought wrote:

“Since day one, the Trump Administration has targeted waste, fraud, and abuse in Federal spending through executive action, DOGE review, and other efforts by departments and agencies.

The Trump administration acted quickly on Monday to punish Harvard University after it refused to comply with a list of demands from the federal government that the school said were unlawful.

On Monday afternoon, Harvard became the first university to refuse to comply with the administration’s requirements, setting up a showdown between the federal government and the nation’s wealthiest university. By the evening, federal officials said they would freeze $2.2 billion in multiyear grants to Harvard, along with a $60 million contract.

Other universities have pushed back against the administration’s interference in higher education. But Harvard’s response, which called the Trump administration’s demands illegal, marked a major shift in tone for the nation’s most influential school, which has been criticized in recent weeks for capitulating to Trump administration pressure.
