Former ESPN anchor Keith Olbermann appeared to threaten conservative CNN analyst Scott Jennings on Monday.

Olbermann wrote to Scott Jennings in a now-deleted post on X, “You’re next motherfucker.”

“But keep mugging to the camera,” he said in another deleted post.

Scott Jennings shared screenshots of the posts and tagged FBI Director Kash Patel.

According to the New York Post, Olbermann was “responding to a tweet from Jennings reacting to ABC reinstating late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, after he was pulled off the air for offensive comments related to conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination.”

‘”Now we get the fascists off real TV. That’d mean your career is next, Jennings. Send a tape to Real America ‘s Voice,’ Olbermann posted in that thread, a possible clarification of what he meant,” added the post.

Olbermann’s post comes less than a week after he suggested conservative activist Charlie Kirk is burning in hell following his assassination.

President Donald Trump’s DOJ argues against Illinois gun ban– www.chicagotribune.com

President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice weighed in Monday against the ban on high-powered firearms that Illinois and Gov. JB Pritzker passed after the Highland Park Fourth of July mass shooting in 2022 but found itself on the defensive as an appellate court justice grilled an assistant attorney general about whether “facts matter” as she tried to justify the administration’s position.

In arguing before the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, Harmeet Dhillon, the U.S. Justice Department’s assistant attorney general for civil rights, said the nation has a “strong interest” in ensuring that the Second Amendment’s right to bear arms is “not relegated to a second-class right” and criticized claims from state officials that certain guns covered by the ban are suited more for military operations than routine self-defense.

But Judge Frank Easterbrook interrupted Dhillon early during the five minutes the court allowed her to speak even though the federal government is not a party to the case. Easterbrook noted the legal challenge from state officials resulted from a ruling by a district court in southern Illinois that determined the ban was unconstitutional, while a court in northern Illinois previously ruled a similar ban was legally sound.

“Suppose the (southern Illinois) district court had found every contested issue of fact in favor of the state. Would that affect your review of the statute’s constitutionality?” asked Easterbrook, who was appointed to the bench in the 1980s by Republican President Ronald Reagan.

As Dhillon began answering by saying, “It would not, your honor,” Easterbrook fired back, “So you don’t think the facts matter?”

US envoy Tom Barrack says interests ‘not aligned’ with Israel– www.washingtonexaminer.com

The United States special envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, said America’s interests weren’t aligned with any country in the Middle East, including Israel.

Barrack gave a pessimistic assessment of the Middle East, saying there would probably never be peace in the region during an interview with the National News’s On the Record with Hadley Gamble. He then made a surprising statement, saying his mistrust of all powers in the region extends to longtime U.S. ally Israel.

“If we’ve talked about trust, quite honestly, in this business, I don’t trust any of them. Our interests are not aligned. ‘Ally’ is a mistaken word; our interests are not aligned,” he said.

When Gamble interjected to ask if he was referring to the Syrian regime, he said he was referring to the whole region generally. She then asked if that included Israel, to which he responded, “Absolutely.”

Barrack voiced further disenchantment with Israel and its effect on the region elsewhere in the interview, particularly regarding Lebanon. He said that due to Israel’s actions, Hezbollah had no incentive to disarm.

Charlie Kirk’s Memorial Was Christian Nationalism’s Biggest Moment – Mother Jones– www.motherjones.com

On Sunday, a crowd of 80,000 people — plus scores more watching online — memorialized Charlie Kirk. The event, held at a State Farm Stadium, home to the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, brought together the biggest names in Christian music while also featuring a predictable lineup of MAGA loyalists. There were declarations that Donald Trump was chosen by God himself to punish evildoers, capped off with a rousing speech by Trump himself that seethed in hatred for his political opponents. The event was bizarre — unless you’re acquainted with the liturgy and theology of Christian nationalism.

In many ways, this was one of Christian nationalism’s biggest and loudest days. It was clear that in Kirk, this movement had found its icon — an exemplar of their brand of nationalistic faith. In life, Kirk tried to set himself apart from the movement that’s come to define his legacy. “I’ve never described myself as a Christian nationalist,” he said during one campus debate months before his assassination. “I”m a Christian, and I’m a nationalist.” But it’s a distinction without a difference. Kirk followed his own rebuttal by citing scripture to justify a faith-infused nationalism. The memorial of his life followed a similar pattern; gesturing at scripture, and dripping in the nationalistic fervor that’s come to define modern conservative politics.

There was a sermon by Pastor Rob McCoy, which culminated in a call for people to accept Jesus as their personal savior. But what followed wasn’t a moment of solemn, lingering, prayer. Instead, the crowd was called to stand for the national anthem.

President Trump has harnessed the weight of his office in recent days to accelerate a campaign of retribution against his perceived political enemies and attacks on 1st Amendment protections.

In the last week alone, Trump replaced a U.S. attorney investigating two of his political adversaries with a loyalist and openly directed the attorney general to find charges to file against them.

His Federal Communications Commission chairman hinted at punitive actions against networks whose journalists and comedians run afoul of the president.

Trump filed a $15-billion lawsuit against the New York Times, only to have it thrown out by a judge.

The acting U.S. attorney in Los Angeles asked the Secret Service to investigate a social media post by Gov. Gavin Newsom’s press office.

The Pentagon announced it was imposing new restrictions on reporters who cover the U.S. military.

The Department of Homeland Security said that it would not comply with a ban on masks for agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement from California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).

Newsom included the ban in a handful of new bills meant to interfere with federal efforts to deport illegal aliens in California. Another bill required school administrators to notify parents and students if there are federal operations near school campuses.

‘I’ve directed our federal agencies that the law signed today has no effect on our operations.’

On Monday, DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin issued a statement saying the department would not comply with the order.

“To be clear: We will NOT comply with Gavin Newsom’s unconstitutional mask ban,” the statement reads.

“At a time that ICE law enforcement faces a 1,000% increase in assaults and their family members are being doxxed and targeted, the sitting Governor of California signed unconstitutional legislation that strips law enforcement of protections in a disgusting, diabolical fundraising and PR stunt,” McLaughlin added.

Florida Democrat Blasts Open Carry Ruling As ‘Dangerous’ While 45 States Allow It– www.usacarry.com

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried issued a statement this week strongly opposing the First District Court of Appeals ruling that declared Florida’s ban on open carry unconstitutional. Fried argued the decision “paves the way for open carry in the State of Florida” and claimed it will make Floridians less safe.

Fried referenced rising gun violence nationwide, warning that allowing open carry could embolden criminals and cause public confusion. She urged law enforcement to hold off on recognizing the ruling until a final legal judgment is issued. “This is a moment in history when we need to promote safer environments, not embolden those who could abuse the ruling’s intent to sow seeds of terror,” Fried said.

But the argument raises an important question: why would legally allowing open carry embolden criminals? By definition, criminals do not follow the law. Whether open carry is legal or not has little bearing on those already willing to break gun laws. Instead, restrictions primarily affect law-abiding citizens, leaving them with fewer options for exercising their rights.

Florida already allows concealed carry without a permit, so there is no reason to treat open carry any differently. The vast majority of states that permit open carry have not experienced the dire consequences opponents often predict. Instead, these laws simply recognize the rights of responsible citizens and give them the choice of how they carry.

In the almost two weeks since Charlie Kirk’s assassination, the Democratic Party has continued to ramp up the inflammatory rhetoric against Republicans and conservatives. Earlier today, we told you how Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) continued to call Republicans “Nazis” (after several calls for violence against Republicans).

She’s not alone, with social media users posting vile calls to violence against the Kirk family, President Trump, and even the attendees of Kirk’s memorial service, which was held on September 21 in Arizona.

Now, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is fighting back against this extremism by launching a portal to “Combat Violent Extremism.”

Palestinians in West Bank fear recognition is not enough– www.bbc.com

In Ramallah – the de facto Palestinian capital of the occupied West Bank – many fear Western recognition of Palestinian statehood is too little, too late.

“I’m really glad that there are people who can see our suffering in Palestine and understand the problems we’re going through,” says Diaa, 23, who did not want to give his full name.

“But while recognition is important, what we really need are solutions.”

This city is home to government buildings, diplomatic missions, and a sprawling presidential palace.

But for many Palestinians, the dream remains that East Jerusalem – just a few miles south but largely cut off by Israel’s separation barrier – could become their capital under a two-state solution, which would create an independent Palestine in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, alongside Israel.

It is with that stated goal that the UK, France, Australia, Canada, Portugal, Belgium, Malta, Luxembourg, Andorra, and Monaco announced formal recognition of the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in New York this week.

“Recognition is a positive after all this time,” says Kamal Daowd, 40, on a busy Ramallah street. “But without international pressure it will not be enough.”

“If recognition comes without giving us our rights,” he says. “Then it’s nothing more than ink on paper”.

Israel will close the Allenby border crossing between the West Bank and Jordan on Wednesday, the Palestinian General Authority for Borders and Crossings said in a statement on Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear why Israel was closing the only checkpoint between the two, but it is reportedly to remain shut until further notice.

The Israel Airports Authority, which manages the crossing, said on Monday that it had reopened for passenger traffic days after a truck driver from Jordan killed two Israeli soldiers in a gun and knife attack.

Jordan’s Public Security Directorate said the crossing, known in Jordan as the King Hussein Bridge, was closed to passenger and freight traffic coming from the Israeli-occupied West Bank until further notice.

The Allenby Crossing is the primary route for transporting commercial goods between Jordan and the West Bank, serving as the sole entry and exit point for Palestinians from the West Bank travelling by land.

Scientists have sent quantum signals over standard fiber-optic cables using the same connectivity that powers today’s web, in what could be a major step towards a working quantum internet.

In a study published Aug. 28 in the journal Science, researchers used a custom-built quantum chip to package quantum data alongside a standard optical signal and transmit them over commercial infrastructure.

“Unlike earlier experiments that required isolated, lab-based setups or specialized infrastructure, this approach integrates quantum communication into real-world networks for the first time,” senior study author Liang Feng, professor of materials science and electrical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, told Live Science in an email.

“Our Q‑Chip enables control of quantum signals and classical signals, so they travel together over the same fiber‑optic cables, using standard internet protocols.”

Jimmy Kimmel and Disney are reportedly negotiating a compromise that would allow for his talk show to return to air.

Business and legal representatives for the longtime late-night host have been in talks with the higher-ups at ABC and its parent company, Disney, with the hopes of bringing “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” back to TVs nationwide, Variety reported, citing three sources with knowledge on the matter.

The show was abruptly pulled off the air on Wednesday, with executives saying it would be “preempted indefinitely” over Kimmel’s remarks about the discourse triggered by the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Since then, the 11:35 p.m. slot has been filled with reruns of “Celebrity Family Feud,” and a Charlie Kirk memorial special that aired Friday.

Kirk was shot on Sept. 10 during a student Q&A at Utah Valley University as part of his American Comeback Tour. He was hit in the neck by a lone bullet during the outdoor event on the Orem campus and was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Kirk, the co-founder of conservative organization Turning Point USA and a major President Trump ally, was 31 years old.

‘Strategy is to…’: China welcomes Saudi-Pakistan defence deal, sees it as a move to corner India and Israel – India.Com

Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed a defence agreement on Wednesday, stating that an attack on either country will be treated as an attack on both. The pact is meant to strengthen their decades-old security partnership at a time when tensions in the region are rising. The two nations have always shared close ties, with Saudi Arabia often described as Pakistan’s “ATM” because of its repeated financial support.

Pakistan, who already shares close defence ties with China, welcomed the new Saudi-Pakistan pact. Chinese analysts have described the agreement as part of a strategy aimed at putting pressure on India and Israel.

The agreement comes as Saudi Arabia faces fresh security concerns. According to Global Times, Gulf countries have begun to question America’s reliability as their long-term security protector. Worries increased further after Israel’s recent attack on Qatar. In a statement, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said: “Any act of aggression against one will be considered an act of aggression against both.”

After the signing of the defence agreement, Pakistan’s state television showed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman smiling and hugging each other. Media reports said that Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, was also present at the event. Munir, often described as the most powerful man in Pakistan, is believed to be the key figure behind this deal. Analysts say he understands that Pakistan’s army alone cannot defeat India, so he is trying to bring Saudi Arabia in as a strong security partner and source of pressure on New Delhi.

A new poll puts Germany’s far-right AfD neck and neck with Chancellor Merz’s Christian Democrats, signalling a broader shift as the party expands beyond its eastern strongholds and builds national momentum.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) continues to put pressure on Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democrats, with a widely watched poll released showing the two parties tied among voters at 26%.

The AfD have topped polls before after surging in popularity over the past year, but the latest edition of the public broadcaster ZDF’s Politbarometer poll underscores the party’s apparent staying power – and a threat to Merz from further to the right. His junior coalition partners, the once-mighty Social Democrats (SPD), stayed steady at 15% in the poll – once an unthinkably poor showing for the centre-left party.

The poll comes on the heels of last week’s election in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Germany’s most populous state. Merz’s Christian Democrats managed to hold onto power in the vote – but the AfD made deep inroads, nearly tripling its share of the vote.

Excerpt:

Elon Musk’s Neuralink is preparing to launch a landmark clinical trial in October 2025, aiming to help patients with severe speech impairments, including those affected by spinal injuries, stroke, and ALS, communicate directly using their thoughts. The US Food and Drug Administration has granted Neuralink a “Breakthrough Device” designation and investigational device exemption, allowing fast-track approval for this study. Neuralink’s brain implants are designed to read activity in the speech cortex and convert imagined speech into text, bypassing keyboards or spoken words. The technology also has the potential to allow users to interact with AI models and send information directly through devices such as wireless earbuds.

How Neuralink’s thought-to-text implants work

Neuralink’s implant records activity in the brain’s speech cortex, decoding neural signals to convert thoughts into readable text. Unlike traditional virtual keyboard brain-computer interfaces, this technology directly translates imagined speech into words. Previous human trials since 2024 have allowed participants to control computers, send emails, play video games, and post on social media using only their thoughts. The upcoming trial is the first FDA-cleared study specifically aimed at decoding speech from brain waves, providing faster and more intuitive communication for patients with severe speech or motor impairments.Neuralink resolved prior FDA safety concerns before beginning human trials. As of September 2025, at least 12 participants worldwide have received the implant, providing thousands of hours of data on its performance and safety. So far, the devices have demonstrated consistent results without major adverse effects, allowing participants with paralysis to perform complex digital tasks through thought alone.

Malawi’s electoral commission warns parties of Lazarus Chakwera and Peter Mutharika not to declare victory– www.bbc.com

The head of Malawi’s electoral commission has warned political parties not to prematurely declare electoral victory, saying they should wait for the official results.

Annabel Mtalimanja’s warning came after the parties of the two main presidential candidates, the incumbent Lazarus Chakwera and his predecessor Peter Mutharika, claimed they had won Tuesday’s poll.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Ms Mtalimanja said that only the commission was mandated to release results.

Malawians have been eagerly awaiting results, but the commission has not yet released any – despite the fact that nearly all votes have been counted.

The commission is expected to announce the outcome only after all votes have been tallied and verified in order to avoid the possibility of the final result being challenged.

A candidate needs to win more than 50% of the vote, or a run-off is held.
