“We have zero tolerance for direct or implicit threats against government officials. I’ve referred this matter to [The US Secret Service] and requested a full threat assessment.”

Acting US Attorney for the Central District of California, Bill Essayli, said Saturday he has referred a social media post from Governor Gavin Newsom’s press office to the Secret Service that he said could have been a potential threat against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Earlier Saturday morning, Newsom’s press office posted on X, “Kristi Noem is going to have a bad day today. You’re welcome, America.” The initial post did not clarify what it was referencing.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin condemned the remark on X, writing, “This reads like a threat. This is ugly [Gavin Newsom]. Your keyboard warrior team may hide behind their laptops and spew this kind of vitriol but you would never have the guts to say this to her face.”

CONAKRY, Guinea — Polls opened in Guinea on Sunday for a referendum that could allow the leader of the country’s junta to run for the presidency and is being closely watched in the coup-battered region.

Citizens of this coastal West African country are casting their ballots in favor or against a new draft constitution, the key step in the country’s transition from military rule to civilian rule. Elections are expected to follow in December.

Guinea is one of a growing number of West African countries, including Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, where the military has taken power and delayed a return to civilian rule. Critics say Sunday’s referendum is a way for Gen. Mamadi Doumbouya, who ousted President Alpha Conde in 2021, to seek the presidency and legitimize his military rule.

There are 6.7 million eligible voters and the referendum needs a voter turnout of at least 50% to pass.

Polls opened at 7 a.m. local time and are expected to close at 6 p.m.

In the last days of the campaign, Conakry, Guinea’s capital, was buzzing with activity. There were Quran readings, reggae concerts and prayers held in support of Doumbouya. Supporters wearing T-shirts and boubous — traditional West African flowing garments — printed with Doumbouya’s face, gathered at neighborhood rallies. Only one thing was missing: the opposition.

Superpowered Artificial Intelligence could bring about the extinction of humankind in just a few years, researchers have claimed.

AI risk researchers have joined together to issue an urgent warning about the future of AI in a new book, titled If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies, claiming a frightening iteration of the already advanced technology could arrive imminently. They claim Artificial superintelligence (ASI) is just two to five years from development, and that it spells doom for humanity.

When it arrives, they have sensationally claimed that “everyone, everywhere on Earth, will die”, and warned people spooked by the research they should join the call to have development paused “as soon as we can for as long as necessary”.

Judge decides Chicago lawsuit against gunmaker can advance– www.chicagotribune.com

A Cook County judge on Thursday denied motions to dismiss a lawsuit brought last year by the city of Chicago against gun manufacturer Glock and a pair of suburban gun stores.

In a 17-page order, Judge Allen P. Walker wrote, in part, that “a reasonable jury could determine that the design and manufacture of a Glock pistol by Glock Inc., its subsequent sale by Eagle Sports Range and Midwest Sporting Goods, materially contribute to a condition in the City of Chicago that endangers the safety and health of the public.”

The next hearing in the lawsuit, brought by the city last year, is scheduled for next month.

“This ruling is a major step towards holding Glock accountable for endangering the residents of our city,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement.

The city has alleged that Glock willfully ignored design flaws in its handguns that allow for them to be easily turned to fire automatic rounds.

The spike in the use of “auto sears” or “switches” — quarter-size devices affixed to Glock pistols that allow for multiple bullets to be fired with one trigger pull — has  exacerbated the city’s entrenched violence problems, city attorneys allege.

Genes are the building blocks of life, and the genetic code provides the instructions for the complex processes that make organisms function. But how and why did it come to be the way it is? A recent study from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign sheds new light on the origin and evolution of the genetic code, providing valuable insights for genetic engineering and bioinformatics.

“We find the origin of the genetic code mysteriously linked to the dipeptide composition of a proteome, the collective of proteins in an organism,” said corresponding author Gustavo Caetano-Anollés, professor in the Department of Crop Sciences, the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, and Biomedical and Translation Sciences of Carle Illinois College of Medicine at U. of I.

Caetano-Anollés’ work focuses on phylogenomics, which is the study of evolutionary relationships between the genomes of organisms. His research team previously built phylogenetic trees mapping the evolutionary timelines of protein domains (structural units in proteins) and transfer RNA (tRNA), an RNA molecule that delivers amino acids to the ribosome during protein synthesis. In this study, they explored the evolution of dipeptide sequences (basic modules of two amino acids linked by a peptide bond), finding the histories of domains, tRNA, and dipeptides all match.

Life on Earth began 3.8 billion years ago, but genes and the genetic code did not emerge until 800,000 million years later, and there are competing theories about how it happened.

Some scientists believe RNA-based enzymatic activity came first, while others suggest proteins first started working together. The research of Caetano-Anollés and his colleagues over the past decades supports the latter view, showing that ribosomal proteins and tRNA interactions appeared later in the evolutionary timeline.

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg have made light-powered gears on a micrometer scale. This paves the way for the smallest on-chip motors in history, which can fit inside a strand of hair.

Gears are everywhere – from clocks and cars to robots and wind turbines. For more than 30 years, researchers have been trying to create even smaller gears in order to construct micro-engines. But progress stalled at 0.1 millimeters, as it was not possible to build the drive trains needed to make them move any smaller.

Researchers from Gothenburg University, among others, have now broken through this barrier by ditching traditional mechanical drive trains and instead using laser light to set the gears in motion directly.

North Korean leader recalls ‘good memories’ of Trump, urges US to drop denuclearization demands– abcnews.go.com

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un says he still has good memories of U.S. President Donald Trump and urged Washington to drop its demand the North surrender its nukes as a precondition for resuming long-stalled diplomacy.

Speaking to Pyongyang’s rubber-stamp parliament on Sunday, Kim stressed that he has no intention of ever resuming dialogue with rival South Korea, a key U.S. ally that helped broker Kim’s previous summits with Trump during the American president’s first term, according to a speech published by state media on Monday.

Kim suspended virtually all cooperation with the South following the collapse of his second summit with Trump in 2019 over disagreements about U.S.-led sanctions against the North. Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have worsened in recent years as Kim has accelerated his weapons buildup and aligned with Russia over the war in Ukraine.

Kim’s comments came as South Korean President Lee Jae Myung prepares to depart for New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, where he is expected to address nuclear tensions on the Korean Peninsula and call on North Korea to return to talks.

Trump is also expected to visit South Korea next month to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, prompting media speculation that he may try to meet Kim at the inter-Korean border, as they did during their third meeting in 2019, which ultimately failed to salvage their nuclear diplomacy.

During his latest speech at the Supreme People’s Assembly, Kim reiterated that he would never give up his nuclear weapons program, which experts say he sees as his strongest guarantee of survival and the extension of his family’s dynastic rule.

“The world already knows well what the United States does after forcing other countries to give up their nuclear weapons and disarm,” Kim said. “We will never lay down our nuclear weapons … There will be no negotiations, now or never, about trading anything with hostile countries in exchange for lifting sanctions.”

British artist Morrissey has cancelled two shows in the US after receiving a death threat ahead of a concert in Ottawa, Canada.

A 26-year-old Ottawa man was released on bail after allegedly uttering a threat to kill the singer, whose real name is Steven Morrissey, ahead of his performance at a music festival last week.

The event went on as planned, but the singer later cancelled two shows in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Morrissey was the front man of the rock band The Smiths, but left the band in 1987 to pursue a solo career.

He is known for being outspoken on issues such as animal welfare and politics.

In 2006, he refused to tour in Canada in protest at the annual seal hunt.

After the threat against his life in Ottawa last week, he cancelled Friday’s show in Connecticut and one in Boston.

“In recent days, there has been a credible threat on Morrissey’s life,” said a statement from the Boston venue on Instagram.

“Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of both the artist and the band, tomorrow’s engagement at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway has been canceled.”

President Trump said Saturday that he would be nominating senior White House aide Lindsey Halligan to serve as the top federal prosecutor for the Virginia office that was thrown into turmoil when its U.S. attorney, Erik Siebert, abruptly left on Friday.

In a social media post just after he departed the White House for an event at Mount Vernon, Mr. Trump wrote he would be nominating Halligan as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, writing that she “will be Fair, Smart, and will provide, desperately needed, JUSTICE FOR ALL!”

Mr. Trump’s selection of Halligan came just hours after another conservative lawyer, Mary “Maggie” Cleary, said in an email to staff that was obtained by CBS News that she had been named acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

“While this appointment was unexpected, I am humbled to be joining your ranks,” Cleary told employees in the email. “The Eastern District of Virginia has a distinguished legacy upon which we will build.”

CBS News has reached out to the White House for clarification on whether Cleary or Halligan will be leading the Eastern District of Virginia while Halligan’s Senate nomination process plays out.

Halligan has been part of Mr. Trump’s legal orbit for the last several years, including serving as one of his attorneys in the early days of the FBI’s investigation into Mr. Trump’s retention of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

BOGOTA, Colombia — The YouTube account of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was offline Saturday, with Venezuelan state-run channel Telesur claiming in a message on X that it was “eliminated” late the previous night without justification.

YouTube’s parent company Google did not immediately respond to questions on the apparent termination of the Venezuelan president’s account. It comes amid rising tensions between Venezuela and the United States over the deployment of American warships and fighter jets in the southern Caribbean.

Maduro’s YouTube account had more than 200,000 followers before it became unavailable Friday and was used to publish the Venezuelan president’s speeches, as well as clips from his weekly show on Venezuelan state TV.

On its website, YouTube says it eliminates accounts that commit “repeated violations of community guidelines” that include publishing misinformation, hate speech and content that “interferes with democratic processes.”

Maduro has been widely accused of stealing last year’s presidential election in Venezuela, which he lost by a landslide according to tally sheets gathered by hundreds of Venezuelan opposition activists. Venezuela’s elections agency, which is controlled by the ruling socialist party, never published tally sheets to support its claim that Maduro won the vote.

“He wasn’t interested in demonizing anyone. He was interested in persuading everyone to the ideas and principles he believed were good, right, and true.”

A massive memorial was held for Charlie Kirk, a young conservative leader slain by an assassin’s bullet on September 10. The Glendale, Arizona State Farm Stadium was fully packed with supporters, friends, family, and colleagues.

The ceremony began with evangelical worship songs, filling the stadium with prayer and communion, bringing people together in faith. Kirk was just 31 years old when he was shot and killed while hosting an open debate with students at Utah Valley University.

Many people who worked with Kirk spoke of his legacy, sharing personal memories and moments they had spent with him over his short life. Those in attendance flew in from across the country.

The White House sent two planes full of staffers and administration officials to the memorial. Members of the Cabinet were in attendance, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and many others.

Tucker Carlson delivered a Christ-centered speech at Charlie Kirk’s memorial service in Arizona on Sunday, receiving thunderous applause after encouraging the crowd to listen to the assassinated Turning Point USA founder’s message of faith.

The conservative commentator took to the stage at State Farm Stadium in Glendale in front of tens of thousands of people to shift their focus to Kirk’s “Christian Evangelist” beliefs:

“This is the most unbelievable thing I think I’ve ever seen,” Carlson began, referring to the enormous, lively audience. “Whatever happens next in America — I hope it’s in this direction, because God is here, and you can feel it. And Charlie would have loved this, not just because he loved large groups of people, but because ultimately, he was a Christian evangelist.”

Carlson then brought up how people conspired against Jesus in the Bible:

It actually reminds me of my favorite story ever. So it’s about 2000 years ago in Jerusalem, and Jesus shows up, and he starts talking about the people in power and he starts doing the worst thing that you can do, which is telling the truth about people — and they hate it, and they just go bonkers. They hate it, and they become obsessed with making him stop. ‘This guy’s got to stop talking. We’ve got to shut this guy up.’ And I can just sort of picture the scene in a lamp-lit room with a bunch of guys sitting around eating hummus, thinking about, ‘What do we do about this guy telling the truth about us? We must make him stop talking.’ And there’s always one guy with the bright idea, and I can just hear him say, ‘I’ve got an idea. Why don’t we just kill him? That’ll shut him up, that’ll fix the problem.’

It doesn’t work that way. It doesn’t work that way. Everything is inverted, and the Beatitudes tell it, I think, the most crisply, that everything is sort of the opposite of what you think it’s going to be.

During the Sunday, September 21, public memorial service for the late Charlie Kirk, his wife, Erika Kirk (née Frantzve) publicly forgave the man allegedly responsible for her husband’s death.

“I forgive him because it is what Christ did,” Erika, 36, said during her husband’s service, held at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. “The answer to hate is not hate.”

During her remarks, Erika also urged those in attendance to follow her husband’s example as a wife and a husband.

“Please be a leader worth following,” she told the thousands of attendees. “Your wife is not your servant. Your wife is not your employee. Your wife is not your slave. She is your helper. You are not rivals. You are one flesh, working together for the glory of God.”

Charlie, a conservative activist and the founder of right-wing organization Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University. He was 31.

“Charlie loved life. He loved his life, he loved America, he loved nature which always helped him closer to God,” Erika said during an X livestream two days later, breaking her silence on her husband’s passing. “He loved the Chicago Cubs and my goodness did he love the Oregon Ducks.”

In addition to Erika, Charlie is survived by the couple’s two kids.

“Most of all Charlie loved his children and he loved me with all of his heart and I knew that everyday. He made sure I knew that everyday,” Erika added in her September 12 statement. “Everyday he would ask me, ‘How can I serve you better? How can I be a better husband? How can I be a better father?’ … He was a such a good man. He still is such a good man. He was the perfect father. He was the perfect husband.”

Student Suspended After Wearing MAGA Hat and Getting Into Dispute at School– www.louderwithcrowder.com

This is America, where freedom of speech is central to the foundation of our republic. You would think that means the public school system fosters a culture where diversity of thought is respected and encouraged—but that’s not always the case, especially at Laguna Beach High School.

On Sept. 11, a student wore a MAGA hat to school in honor of Charlie Kirk, less than 24 hours after his death. Wearing that hat is his God-given right. But because the school has failed to instill the importance of that right, another student decided to throw the hat on the floor.

The first student had the perfect response: ‘If you hate this country, move to Canada—they’ve got open borders anyway.’

Rumors quickly spread, with some accusing him of being xenophobic and falsely claiming he told the other student to ‘go back where you came from’—which he never did. And the worst part? The school chose to suspend him, treating the victim as if he were the aggressor.

Can you believe that happened at a public school in America? I can—because nowadays, so-called ‘educators’ not only fail to teach students the importance of political discourse, they actively disdain it. And there’s no better evidence for that than this story.

I don’t have to tell you why freedom of speech and upholding our constitutional rights are more important now than ever, but the school should—and must—do better. His mother believes the school acted against him because of his political beliefs, and I couldn’t agree more. Yet just because this outcome was expected doesn’t make it any less troubling. These are supposed to be places where political discussions happen the most, yet students are not apprehensive about expressing their opinions for fear of retaliation. That is something that should never be tolerated in this great nation.
