Both Canada and Mexico faced a 25 percent tariff from the U.S. after President Trump ordered it into effect. Mexico announced a temporary deal delaying the tariffs by one month. China has so far appealed to the World Trade Organization (WTO). Trump has warned Americans that there might be a price to pay for the tariff wars, but, in the end, it will be worth it long-term for American prosperity. The EU came out against the tariffs, with concerns they might be next.

Mexico has vowed to send 10,000 national guard troops to the northern border in response to the tariff threat. Canada has vowed it will respond to the U.S. with in-kind tariffs.

The United States and its biggest trading partners were hurtling on Sunday into a new era of protectionism as Canada, Mexico and China said they would adopt countermeasures against new tariffs levied by President Trump.

From honey to tomatoes, and from clothes to toilet bowls, a wide range of American goods that cross the border into Canada, worth more than $100 billion, will soon be hit with a 25 percent tariff.

“We don’t want to be here,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a somber televised address from Ottawa on Saturday night in which he spoke of the deep bonds between the neighbors. “We didn’t ask for this.”

On Sunday, China said it would “take corresponding countermeasures to firmly safeguard its rights and interests.” It also said it would take legal action at the World Trade Organization.

And in a video released on Sunday, President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico said that she would unveil the first steps of her government’s so-called Plan B plan on Monday if an agreement with the United States could not be reached. Ms. Sheinbaum earlier warned of retaliatory “tariff and nontariff measures.”

Mexico and the United States have reached a one-month agreement to stave off tariffs and a trade war, the threat of which sent global markets tumbling early Monday.

The tariffs on Mexico were set to go into effect Tuesday. By midday Monday, Trump’s 25% tariff on Canadian goods and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods still appeared on course to begin Tuesday.

Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo said her country will send 10,000 National Guard troops to its northern border, while President Donald Trump agreed to work to slow the flow of American weapons south of the border.

Trump had promised 25% tariffs on all goods from Mexico before the two leaders worked out an agreement early Monday in a phone call.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada laid out more than $100 billion in retaliatory tariffs against the United States late Saturday, in a forceful response to President Trump’s decision to impose levies on a range of Canadian goods.

But he made clear that Canada was doing so reluctantly.

“We don’t want to be here,” Mr. Trudeau said in a somber televised address from Ottawa that evoked the deep bonds between the two neighbors and close trading partners. “We didn’t ask for this.”

Mr. Trudeau spoke hours after President Trump hit Canada and Mexico with tariffs of 25 percent on all goods, with a partial carve out for Canadian energy and oil exports. Mr. Trudeau said that Canada would swiftly impose its own “far-reaching” retaliatory tariffs of 25 percent on 155 billion Canadian dollars ($106 billion) worth of U.S. goods.

Canada on Sunday published a detailed list of all the U.S. goods imported into Canada that will be subjected to the tariff, including hundreds of products including honey, tomatoes, whiskey and peanut butter. Also on the list were garments, porcelain goods such as toilets and bath tubs, as well as refrigerators and dish washers.

Trump’s move has sparked volatility in the commodities market. Here are some reactions to the news:

“We still expect Canadian oil producers to eventually bear most of the burden of the tariff with a $3 to $4 a barrel wider-than-normal discount on Canadian crude given limited alternative export markets, with U.S. consumers of refined products bearing the remaining $2 to $3 a barrel burden.

“We estimate Canadian natural gas exports to the U.S. might drop by a modest 0.16 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) as a result of 10% import tariffs, with little if any impact on U.S. gas prices.”

While reaffirming Germany’s commitment to economic ties with the U.S., German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that the first priority should be “not to divide up the world with many tariff barriers.”

BRUSSELS: The European Union on Sunday (Feb 2) blasted US President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China, and said the 27-nation bloc would hit back “firmly” if targeted.

Brussels had until now indicated it hoped to avoid a trade conflict with Trump through negotiation.

But on Friday the US leader doubled down by saying he “absolutely” planned to target the EU in future, as he slapped levies on his north American neighbours and China.

“The European Union regrets the US decision to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China,” said a spokesman for the European Commission.

“Tariffs create unnecessary economic disruption and drive inflation. They are hurtful to all sides.”

The spokesman said “the EU would respond firmly to any trading partner that unfairly or arbitrarily imposes tariffs on EU goods”.

“At this time, we are not aware of any additional tariffs being imposed on EU products,” he added.

“I hereby state unequivocally that I do not recognize Justice Isaac Amit as the President of the Supreme Court, and the procedures through which he was ‘elected’ are fundamentally flawed and illegal,” he wrote.

Levin went on to say in a separate statement that Amit’s appointment happened amidst many allegations about his behavior in various cases that the justice minister believes were not correctly investigated.

The allegations against Amit included unreported court proceedings by the Tel Aviv Municipality against owners of a building in Tel Aviv, which included Amit and his brother; a series of cases that Amit oversaw that involved First International Bank of Israel and Dor Alon, even though his brother was involved in these companies at different points; alleged building infractions in Amit’s home in Mevaseret Zion; and a ruling regarding boards of directors of government companies that allegedly could have affected his brother.

Levin said that other senior officials had been removed from the pool of candidates for far less and called the appointment a “moral disgrace” that “reeks of selective enforcement” in the government.

Against the will of the rank-and-file members of the Florida GOP, the people who gave the party its overwhelming majorities in the legislature and Governor’s office, the Florida RINO GOP is leading a revolt through the creation of a bill allegedly intended to help Trump’s Deportation agenda.

Governor Ron DeSantis said of the bill, “The Legislature’s bill is a bait-and-switch tactic trying to create the illusion of an illegal immigration crack down, when it does anything but. It is an insult to name such a weak bill after President Trump, who has been so strong on this issue.”

He added, “By giving enforcement power to the agricultural arm of state government, it ensures that enforcement never actually occurs. In short, it puts the fox in charge of the hen house.”

For the past six or seven years, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been a conservative stalwart in the Sunshine State, and the Republican-controlled state legislature has begrudgingly followed his lead.

But like so many other Republican states, Florida has a deeply entrenched uni party establishment, despite the fact that DeSantis has turned Florida from purple to ruby red, at least with respect to voting patterns.

Most recently, DeSantis called a special session of the legislature to back President Donald Trump’s immigration and mass deportation efforts. Rather than passing helpful immigration policies, the Florida Republican establishment gaveled out on Monday and started their own special session in an attempt to gut immigration enforcement in the state.

In a bill called the TRUMP Act, they named Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson as the chief immigration officer in Florida, and perhaps even worse, they failed to pass a meaningful duty for local and state law enforcement to help with immigration enforcement.

“By giving enforcement power to the agricultural arm of state government, it ensures that enforcement never actually occurs,” DeSantis said on social media. “In short, it puts the fox in charge of the hen house.”

DeSantis added that the move to appoint Simpson as the chief immigration officer “unconstitutionally removes authority to enforce the law from the governor to a lower-level cabinet agency.” He warned that the stakeholders in that agency “often oppose enforcement measures.”

Are you worried about what will happen to Florida when DeSantis leaves office?

“The Legislature’s bill is a bait-and-switch tactic trying to create the illusion of an illegal immigration crack down, when it does anything but,” he continued. “It is an insult to name such a weak bill after President Trump, who has been so strong on this issue.”

The nerve that these lawmakers had to name their watered-down bill the TRUMP Act indeed showed they were signaling to voters that they are handling immigration when in reality they are trying to do the opposite.

Daniel Horowitz, a commentator with The Blaze, added that such efforts are “why so many Republican voters have become jaded with the party.”

Rather than executing on the immigration agenda Florida voters so clearly want, Florida Republican Senate President Ben Albritton is “working with the open borders lobby to undermine the best opportunity to end illegal immigration once and for all,” Horowitz cautioned.

The TRUMP Act bizarrely had a provision to create “more beds” for criminal illegal aliens, prompting DeSantis aide Christina Pushaw to respond.

“Why does it sound like these legislators’ priority is to ensure Florida pays for more beds to comfortably house illegal aliens here?” she asked. “We voted for MASS DEPORTATIONS.”

Lake County Republican Commissioner Anthony Sabatini likewise rebuked the Florida state legislature. He warned that the proposal is a “FAKE immigration bill” that watered down the DeSantis agenda to “nearly nothing” and put “pro-illegal immigration” Simpson in charge of enforcement.

Though we do not see the Republican establishment rear its ugly head as visibly in Florida relative to other red states, the swamp still needs to be drained in Tallahassee.

The latest showdown in Florida is a reminder that the Democrats are not always the problem.

Sometimes the establishment Republicans are actually the enemy.

Even worse, rather than directly opposing the conservative agenda, those sorts of Republicans coat their subversion in a veneer of conservatism in cynical attempts to fool voters.

That means conservatives in Florida, and the rest of the country, must remain vigilant.

Adrian Peeler, who was convicted of murdering a child witness to a crime, will be freed on July 16, 2025, thanks to former President Joe Biden commuting his sentence. Peeler was convicted of murdering 8-year-old Leroy “B.J.” Brown and his mother, Karen Clarke. The case led to the creation of Connecticut’s Witness Protection Program.

Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), who was the state AG at the time, said of the commutation “It seems to me that someone dropped the ball here to let his person get released. This was a really vicious murder that changed our laws. It also highlights how we need to take a look at the pardon system to see how it can be improved.”

Connecticut House Republican leader Vincent Candelora was less generous in his response, saying, “Former President Biden’s clemency for Adrian Peeler is a disgusting miscarriage of justice. Peeler’s conviction tied to brutal murders that prompted the creation of Connecticut’s witness protection program makes any leniency — federal or otherwise — utterly indefensible. This reckless act by Joe Biden dismisses the pain of the victims’ families and erodes public trust in the principles of justice. Such a careless decision at the close of his term should generate outrage here and throughout the nation.”

In Joe Biden’s last days in the White House, he issued another round of commutations for prisoners, totaling nearly 2,500 people. Among the list of those whose sentences were commuted was that of Adrian Peeler, a man who was convicted in the 1999 murder of an 8-year-old boy and his mother.

Peeler was included on a list of inmates whose prison sentences will now expire on July 16, 2025, with $10,000 being taken off their fine or restitution amounts, if applicable.

According to the Hartford Courant, Peeler was convicted for the January 1999 shooting death of 8-year-old Leroy “B.J.” Brown and his mother Karen Clarke. He reportedly conducted the killings on orders from his older brother Russell Peeler, who was a partner in their Bridgeport drug gang. Prosecutors said at the time that Russell was about to be tried for killing Clarke’s boyfriend, Rudolf Snead, who was a rival drug dealer in the Connecticut city, and the brothers wanted to eliminate B.J. as a witness against Russell. The 8-year-old had told police that he and another boy were sitting in Snead’s car and saw Russell Peeler shoot Snead in a 1997 drive-by-attack, of which he survived.

Adrian Peeler was sentenced to 25 years on state charges of conspiring to murder Clarke and her son and 35 years on federal drug trafficking charges, which were ordered to be serviced concurrently. Peeler completed the state murder conspiracy sentence in December 2021 and was transferred to federal custody. Peeler’s federal sentence was reduced to 15 years. Peeler, without the commutation, would have been released in October 2033.

A volatile stretch of the U.S.-Mexico border near Fronton, Texas, has once again become the scene of cartel-related chaos. According to Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, suspected cartel members engaged in a violent incident during what authorities believe was a human smuggling operation.

Just yards from U.S. soil, cartel gunmen armed with rifles patrol the riverbanks, visibly unchallenged on the Mexican side. In some cases, these armed operatives have aimed AK-47s at Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) helicopters. Rival cartels are even seen warring with each other, with Texas DPS thermal drone footage capturing combatants throwing explosives in their fight for control over smuggling routes.

The state of Texas has taken aggressive measures to counteract cartel influence in the area. In October, Texas declared Fronton Island state property and launched a bold initiative to clear and secure it. Crews bulldozed the brush, deployed razor wire, and fortified the territory, turning what was once dense cover for cartel activity into an open, 171-acre barren landscape. The state also stationed Texas troopers and National Guard soldiers to patrol the area, fully armed and prepared to prevent illegal crossings.

“Here on the US side of the river you can see what Texas has done with Fronten Island. They have completely cleared it out, they’ve deployed razor wire and there is now nowhere for these cartel gunmen to hide if they want to cross here illegally,” Melugin reported during his on-the-ground segment.

The California Secretary of State Shirley Web has cleared the way for a secessionist movement called CALEXIT to begin gathering signatures to trigger a referendum vote on leaving the American union. The problem with the vote is it’s being led by far-left activists, which makes it highly unlikely the lands outside the cities in California will follow the left into their own madness.

The goal of the movement is to get a minimum 50 percent of registered voters to show up and vote by 55 percent or more yes to the question, “Should California leave the United States and become a free and independent country?”

California Secretary of State Shirley Weber announced Thursday that she cleared the proponent of a secessionist movement to begin collecting petition signatures. Should Marcus Ruiz Evans and his CALEXIT team secure 546,651 signatures by July 22, then the proposal will be put to a vote on California’s 2028 election ballot.

If at least 50% of registered voters participate in the election and 55% of voters say yes to the question, “Should California leave the United States and become a free and independent country?” then the result would register as a statewide vote of no confidence in the U.S. and an “expression of the will of the people of California” to become an independent country.

According to the California secretary of state’s office, the no-confidence vote would not trigger an immediate change in the state’s current government or relationship with the union. It would instead result in the formation of a commission to report on the Golden State’s viability as an independent country.

The commission might consider the impact of losing free trade with the remaining states in the union; losing over 762,000 full-time jobs with U.S. national security agencies along with tens of billions of dollars annually from national security activity in the state; and no longer having the federal government cover roughly 50% of Californians’ medical costs.

The CALEXIT campaign claims on its website that California — which is struggling to deal with the biggest homeless population in the nation, brutal crime, resource strains resultant from illegal alien populations, drought, wildfires, a housing crisis, and various other problems even with the help of the federal government and over $143 billion a year in federal aid — would be better off on its own, in part, because it could foster its leftist values “without facing ridicule or opposition from states with differing ideologies.”

Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre refused to commit to rolling back the current leftist ruling party’s non-binary gender codification despite acknowledging there are only two genders.

He responded to a reporter questioning what he would do through government to settle the matter, “… as far as I’m concerned, we should have a government that just minds its own damn business and leaves people alone to make their own personal decisions. That’s the kind of government I’m willing to run.”

OTTAWA (LifeSiteNews) – Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre told a reporter that he is aware of “only two genders,” but he stopped short on promising a Conservative government would take action to stop the spread of extreme forms of gender ideology that claims there are many genders.

In an interview on CTV TV News on January 22, Poilievre said, “No, I’m not aware of any other genders than men and women.”

“I mean, if you have any other you want me to consider, you’re welcome to tell me right now,” he added.

His response came after the CTV reporter asked him if he would do something similar to what U.S. President Donald Trump did on his first day in office. Trump signed an Executive Order proclaiming that the policy of the United States is that there are only two sexes, male and female, as per biological reality.

The reporter pressed Poilievre on whether his future potential government would do something like President Trump did to recognize only two genders, man and woman.

Poilievre responded with a somewhat muddled answer, saying, “I’m only aware of two, but I mean if you have, if you come up with another list, then you’re welcome to do that.”

Matthew W. Huttle, a 42-year-old J6 protester who was pardoned by President Donald Trump last week, was fatally shot by an Indiana police officer during a traffic stop near the Pulaski County line, reports FOX32 Chicago.

The incident has sparked outrage and suspicion among those who view Huttle’s death as part of a larger pattern of targeting Trump supporters and J6 protesters.

According to local law enforcement, Huttle resisted arrest during the traffic stop, leading to an altercation in which the officer fired his weapon, killing him.

President Trump’s tariff threats to pressure Colombian President Gustavo Petro to accept U.S. deportation flights served as a warning to the entire region.

But while Petro attempted to stand up to Trump — with only mixed results — Mexico, the country most affected by U.S. policy on migration, appears to be playing it safer.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday said her government is continuing to receive U.S. flights full of deportees, and is accepting a small number from third countries.

“The relationship with the United States is special,” Sheinbaum told reporters. “We are obliged to have a good relationship.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has said vaccines are not safe. His support for abortion access has made conservatives uncomfortable. And farmers across the Midwest are nervous over his talk of banning corn syrup and pesticides from America’s food supply.

The 71-year-old, whose famous name and family tragedies have put him in the national spotlight since he was a child, has spent years airing his populist — and sometimes extreme — views in podcasts, TV interviews and speeches building his own quixotic brand.

A son of a Democratic political dynasty, Kennedy is seeking to become the nation’s top health official under President Donald Trump. To get there, he’s softening those long-held beliefs, hoping to win approval from the Republican Party.

At stake is Kennedy’s control of the nation’s sprawling $1.7 trillion U.S. Health and Human Services agency, which oversees food and hospital inspections, health insurance for roughly half of the country and vaccine recommendations. The job would finally give him the kind of political power Kennedys have wielded for decades.

PANAMA – The Panama Canal, one of the world’s most important trade routes, has become a hot discussion item thanks to President Donald Trump. Much of that has to do with China’s growing influence in the region, and he’s making waves about America taking it back.

In his inaugural address, President Trump accused Panama of not honoring its agreements with the U.S.

“Panama’s promise to us has been broken,” he said. “The purpose of our deal and the spirit of our treaty has been totally violated. American ships are being severely overcharged and not treated fairly in any way, shape, or form. And that includes the United States Navy. And above all, China is operating the Panama Canal. And we didn’t give it to China. We gave it to Panama, and we’re taking it back.”

The U.S. helped to engineer and build the 50-mile waterway from 1904 to 1914. Then the U.S. controlled it from its opening in 1914 until 1979.

Scientists identify neurons in mice that, once activated, can change body’s metabolic rate, induce hibernation-like state– www.sciencedaily.com

A team led by researchers at Georgia State University has identified a novel group of neurons controlling the brain-heart-gut axis which can be activated to induce a hypometabolic state that resembles hibernation. The discovery could have wide-ranging impacts for scientific fields ranging from obesity to cardiometabolic health, and even space travel.

The new study is published in the journal Nature Metabolism.

Lead author Eric Krause is a professor of neuroscience, a Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) Distinguished Investigator at Georgia State University and a core member of the Center for Neuroinflammation and Cardiometabolic Disease (CNCD). Krause worked with researchers from the University of Florida and the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia.

“We identified this population of neurons located near the base of the skull that relay the sensation of mechanical stretch exerted on the gut and heart to the brain. When these neurons are activated, they seem to recreate the sensation of feeling full or having increased blood pressure,” Krause said. “We found that activating these neurons suppresses eating and lowers blood pressure, heart rate and whole-body metabolism.”

During the research, the team discovered that simultaneous, recurrent firing of these neurons in mice produces a torpor-like state, similar to that of animals in hibernation, characterized by reductions in cardiac output, body temperature and energy expenditure.

“We found that repeated excitation of the neurons decreased body mass and produced a hypometabolic state without inducing anxiety-like behaviors that are often observed with chronic stress,” Krause said. “This is changing what we know about body-to-brain communication and how profoundly it affects physiology and behavior.”

Trump delays TikTok ban for 75 days– mashable.com

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to temporarily delay the U.S. TikTok ban, directing the Department of Justice to hold off on enforcing the controversial law for 75 days. This doesn’t mean TikTok has been saved, though.

Trump swiftly signed a slew of executive orders mere hours after his second inauguration as U.S. president on Monday, declaring a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border, abolishing the federal government’s diversity initiatives, and officially creating the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (“DOGE”).

Among these was Trump’s promised executive order regarding the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), also known as the U.S. TikTok ban. In it, Trump directed the Department of Justice not to enforce the ban for two and a half months, allowing TikTok to temporarily continue operating in the U.S. without reprisal.

Keir Starmer to give statement on Southport attack inquiry – UK politics live | Politics– www.theguardian.com

Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, has been giving interviews this morning, where he was restated Tory suggestions that ministers wrongly withheld information from the public about the Southport attacker, Axel Rudakubana, last summer. This is what Philp told Times Radio.

I think it’s just important the inquiry looks at all of this, gets to the truth both about what happened beforehand, but critically also the government’s response afterwards, and what they knew when and whether they should have put more information into the public domain.

It appears they withheld information about the perpetrator, potentially, on CPS [Crown Prosecution Service] advice.

William Shawcross [who conducted an inquiry into Prevent, the anti-radicalisation programme] has raised questions over that, saying that if you leave a void, then speculation fills it, and William Shawcross is obviously an expert lawyer, and also says there’s quite a lot you can say about these incidents afterwards.

But clearly in this case, the government, it appears, didn’t share information which they had in their possession.

China has executed two men responsible for two deadly attacks within a week in November last year.

Fan Weiqiu, 62, killed at least 35 people and injured dozens more after he drove his car into people exercising outside a stadium in Zhuhai, in what is thought to be the deadliest attack on Chinese soil for a decade.

Days later, Xu Jiajin, 21, killed eight people and wounded 17 others in a stabbing spree at his university in the eastern city of Wuxi.

Authorities said Fan was driven by “dissatisfaction” over how his property had been divided following his divorce, while Xu carried out his attack after “failing to obtain his diploma due to poor exam results”.

Fan was detained at the scene on 11 November, where he was found with self-inflicted wounds.

In December, he was found guilty of “endangering public safety”, with the court describing his motive as “extremely vile” and “the methods” used “particularly cruel”.

Canadians must wait until October 20, 2025, to remove the leftist scourge currently occupying its lands in the form of the Liberal Party under far-left authoritarian extremist Justin Trudeau. As of right now, polling shows the Liberal party is 27 points behind the Conservative party, with Liberals getting 20 percent support to the Conservatives’ 47 percent.

President Trump is continuing to threaten Canada with tariffs to offset what he claims is a bad trade deal for the U.S. The Liberal government is doubling down, threatening to match Trump’s tariffs with their own tariffs, and even bans on selling energy to the U.S. Pierre Poilievre appears ready to deal with Trump, but 9 months is a long time for America to wait for a good faith negotiator.

As if they aren’t already facing enough, firefighters in California also could encounter fire tornadoes — a rare but dangerous phenomenon in which wildfires create their own weather.

The National Weather Service warned Tuesday that the combination of high winds and severely dry conditions have created a “particularly dangerous situation” in which any new fire could explode in size. The advisory, which runs into Wednesday, didn’t mention tornadoes, but meteorologist Todd Hall said they’re possible given the extreme conditions.

Judge refuses to let man search landfill for his lost $713 million Bitcoin hard drive– www.techspot.com

What just happened? The sad case of James Howells, the man who has spent the last decade trying to recover a hard drive containing $713 million worth (at the time of writing) of Bitcoin from a local landfill, may have come to an end. He sued his local council for the right to search the site last year, but a judge has thrown out the case before it went to full trial at the High Court.

Howells has been unsuccessfully trying to persuade the council of Newport, Wales, to allow him to dig for the 2.5-inch drive for years. He even promised to donate 10%, or around $71 million, of the Bitcoin to the local community if allowed to carry out a successful search.

In October, Howells sued the city for the right to search the landfill or pay him £495 million ($607 million) in compensation. He claimed in court that he has a “finely tuned plan” to recover the component, and that its position has been narrowed down to a small area.

The Supreme Court seemed to lean Thursday toward upholding a law forcing Chinese parent company ByteDance to sell off TikTok, with all nine justices indicating national security concerns posed by the social media app outweighed potential threats to free speech.

The high court heard oral arguments from lawyers for TikTok and its content creators, who argued the US government’s goal in implementing the legislation was not preventing the harvesting of user data or thwarting foreign espionage but, instead, chipping away at core First Amendment rights.

“The government’s real target, rather, is the speech itself,” said attorney Noel Francisco in his opening statement, concluding that the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act — passed by Congress and signed into law by President Biden last April — “should not stand.”

The US Supreme Court appeared ready Thursday to uphold a law forcing Chinese parent company ByteDance to sell off TikTok, with all nine justices seeming to lend credence to national security concerns posed by the social media app.

Biden administration extends temporary status for more than 200,000 from El Salvador for 18 months – PBS NewsHour

More than 200,000 Salvadorans who have lived more than two decades in the United States can legally remain another 18 months, the Department of Homeland Security said Friday in one of the Biden administration’s final acts on immigration policy.

In explaining its determination, DHS said that the extension is due to “environmental conditions in El Salvador that prevent individuals from returning.”

The decision is the Biden administration’s latest in support of Temporary Protected Status, which he has sharply expanded to cover about 1 million people. TPS faces an uncertain future under Donald Trump, who tried to sharply curtail its use during his first term as president.

Congress created TPS in 1990 to prevent deportations to countries suffering from natural disasters or civil strive, giving people authorization to work in increments of up to 18 months at a time.
