Anthropic’s IPO filing lays bare the cost of the AI race– techcentral.co.za

Anthropic unveiled its US IPO filing on Monday, setting out its ambitions to build AI systems capable of transforming the global economy while confronting the costs and challenges of developing the technology.

The prospectus highlights Anthropic’s rapid growth over the past year, fuelled by Big Tech’s breakneck spending, which has driven a rally in AI stocks while raising concerns about lofty valuations and rising debt.

The listing is expected to establish Anthropic, the AI lab behind the viral Claude models, as a benchmark for how Wall Street values leading AI companies, including rival OpenAI.

Anthropic is pressing ahead with its IPO plans even as a once-busy listing calendar has thinned out, with market volatility prompting companies to delay offerings. The IPO would give Anthropic access to a deep pool of capital to fund its costly AI ambitions, which require heavy investment in computing infrastructure to develop and operate sophisticated models.

Global equities have sold off sharply as investors grow uneasy with the debt-fuelled AI investment boom and start to doubt whether the trillions being poured into data centres, chips and computing capacity will generate returns fast enough to support lofty valuations. Higher borrowing costs and rising bond yields have added to their caution.

AI Boom Sparks Growing Backlash Over Data Centers Across America– cbn.com

From rural Texas to communities nationwide, America’s artificial intelligence boom is colliding with growing backlash over the data centers needed to power it.

Supporters point to jobs, investment, and the race to win AI dominance. Opponents worry about the effects on water, power, and the character of communities where these projects are planned.

In Hood County, Texas, southwest of Fort Worth, one massive proposal is at the center of a fierce fight.

Brian and Laura Crawford raise oryx on their land in the Paluxy River Valley. A massive data center campus would sit just across their fence line.

“We will be able to see data center buildings on a hill that’s just not far. In fact, it’s only about 300 feet from our fence line, but we would be able to see that every day as we walk out our door,” Brian Crawford said.

Kim Jong Un makes surprise China trip after death rumours | World | News– www.express.co.uk

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un has made a surprise trip to China, appearing in public after speculation about his health and whereabouts, as he moves to strengthen ties with Beijing. Mr Kim was pictured smiling and meeting Chinese officials during the visit, which saw him praise President Xi Jinping’s leadership and vow to deepen cooperation between the two communist states.

The North Korean leader travelled across a newly opened bridge linking the two countries before visiting the Chinese border city of Dandong, a vital gateway for trade with his isolated regime. His trip comes as Pyongyang seeks to expand economic ties with its biggest international backer while presenting a united front against the US.

Mr Kim arrived in Dandong on Saturday, October 24, and visited a war memorial commemorating China’s support for North Korea during the 1950-53 Korean War.

He also met senior Chinese officials, including foreign minister Wang Yi, and toured a bus factory before receiving a formal send-off at the new four-lane bridge across the Yalu River.

However, Mr Kim did not meet Mr Xi in person during the visit, although the two leaders exchanged greetings through officials.

The North Korean leader thanked the Chinese president for paying special attention to his trip, according to state media reports.

Mr Kim described the relationship between the two countries as an “invincible” friendship “forged at the cost of blood”.

He added that North Koreans would “forever remember the glorious years of fighting alongside the Chinese people” and pass down “generational gratitude” to those who had helped the country’s revolution.

Presidential race in Bulgaria heads to runoff due to record low turnout– abcnews.com

SOFIA, Bulgaria — The presidential election in Bulgaria on Sunday ended inconclusively, with the next head of state to be picked in a runoff, according to election officials.

A record low turnout, attributed by observers to a general mistrust in politicians resulting in voter apathy, will pit two contrasting political visions against each other in a highly polarized contest on Nov. 1.

In a surprisingly strong performance, the candidate of the pro-Western reformist opposition, Andrey Gyurov, will face the incumbent leftist president, Iliana Yotova, setting clear lines of division regarding the country’s future relationships with other nations.

Bulgarians voted against a backdrop of growing economic hardship and drone attacks on Black Sea shipping. The vote is the first major test for the Moscow-friendly Progressive Bulgaria party of Prime Minister Rumen Radev after its triumph in parliamentary elections in April.

Despite a record number of candidates, the race had been expected to be decided in a runoff between incumbent Yotova, backed by Radev’s party, and former caretaker Prime Minister Gyurov, who is backed by pro-Western opposition parties.

ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigerian President Bola Tinubu launched his reelection bid Saturday, campaigning at a rally for a second presidential term during a cost-of-living crisis and a fractured opposition.

The presidential election will be held in January against the backdrop of a worsening economy that has caused anger among voters against Tinubu’s government, but which Tinubu blamed on opposition parties.

“I hear my opponents talking about hunger and poverty. Who created it? They did,” he said at a rally in the northwestern state of Kaduna. “They created the hunger, they created the poverty. We are trying to eradicate it.”

Tinubu is being challenged by over a dozen opposition candidates, but analysts predict a three-man race between Tinubu and the two contenders he defeated in 2023. They are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, or ADC, a serial presidential candidate, and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, or NDC, a former state governor who blew the last race wide open with his mass appeal to Nigeria’s youth.

Brazil: Leftist Incumbent Lula Narrowly Defeats Bolsonaro in Presidential Runoff– legalinsurrection.com

In Brazil, incumbent leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva barely defeated Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, in the presidential runoff.

This is Lula’s fourth nonconsecutive term.

This is all weird to me. From Fox News:

Bolsonaro narrowly won the first round on Oct. 4, with 47% of the vote, to Lula’s 45%, but fell short of the 50% majority required to win the election outright.

The victory marks an unprecedented fourth presidential term for Lula, and a remarkable comeback victory. The result is even more surprising given that Bolsonaro had led, albeit by tight margins, in recent polling, and Brazil had recently elected a conservative congress aligned with the Bolsonaro agenda.

Earlier I saw The New York Times gush over Brazil’s secure election system.

Then we learned that Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin, who spent a decade as Lula’s defense lawyer, ordered polls to stay open two hours after closing due to “transportation delays and bad weather.”

In September 2026, Chinese President Xi Jinping met United States (US) President Donald Trump in Washington, where discussions on global AI governance were central to their agenda, although the two leaders held opposing positions. Ahead of the summit, the two sides formalised a “USA-China AI Dialogues” track built around an incident hotline. Trump, however, made it clear that Washington rejects any attempt to construct a “globalist” scheme to govern the technology. Xi called on both countries to jointly guard against AI misuse and keep it under human control.

On 16 July 2026, 35 states signed the founding agreement for the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation (WAICO), a China-headquartered body established outside the Western-led AI governance architecture, with no leading Western democracy among its signatories.

Beijing, therefore, while speaking of multilateral governance in Washington, is also building a separate institutional architecture through WAICO on its own terms and with its own membership criteria. Together, these developments suggest a strategy aimed less at restraining AI and more at deciding who writes the rules for its governance.

Despite U.S. officials repeatedly warning Canada not to get involved in the upcoming U.S. midterms, President Donald Trump has his own track record of weighing in on foreign elections.

Trump has endorsed about half a dozen candidates across the globe since he returned to the White House in early 2025 and even boasted earlier this year that he has “a very good record of endorsing candidates in the U.S.,” before touting a number of foreign candidates he backed.

“I’m not supposed to be endorsing people,” Trump said during the February inaugural meeting of his Board of Peace. “As long as it works, it’s OK with me.”

Since early 2025, Trump has backed presidential or prime ministerial candidates in Poland, Honduras, Colombia and Japan.

Most recently, he voiced support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing an election on Tuesday.

The U.S. president also put his support behind former Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán’s failed re-election bid, which included Vice-President JD Vance appearing at a rally in Budapest.

The shocking murder happened in Iran (Image: Getty)

A man who decapitated his wife and paraded through the streets clutching her severed head received a sentence of just eight years in an Iranian prison.

He avoided a more severe punishment after her parents reportedly chose not to invoke Iran’s Islamic law of retribution.

Mona Heydari, a mother of one, was only 17 when she was dragged from a car outside her family home and murdered in February 2022, according to court documents.

Her husband Sajjad Heydari, together with his brother Heydar, carried out the savage killing in Ahvaz, the capital of the south-western Khuzestan Province.

A judiciary spokesman disclosed that the lenient sentence was imposed because Mona’s parents had “pardoned” him for the killing rather than seeking retribution.

Mona, who had been married off at just 12, had initially fled her abusive husband and escaped to Turkey with another man, the court was told.

Heydari had reportedly refused Mona’s requests for a divorce.

(LifeSiteNews) — Researchers investigating a boat-shaped rock formation in eastern Turkey that is believed to be the remains of Noah’s Ark have drilled deep into the structure and collected more than 400 samples, which are now undergoing laboratory analysis.

The project is being carried out by the Noah’s Ark Scans group, that says this is the first drilling campaign conducted with official authorization and under the supervision of Turkish universities. The purpose of the drilling is to determine whether the anomalies identified by previous ground-penetrating radar and geophysical scans can be explained by natural causes or whether they represent traces of an artificial structure.

In an interview with LifeSiteNews, team member Lauren Witzke discusses the drilling campaign, the evidence the researchers say they have found, and the objections raised by critics of the project.

LifeSiteNews: Dear Miss Witzke, thank you for your availability. First of all, what is your role within the research team?

Lauren Witzke: My role is fundraising and marketing. Last year in November of 2025, God laid on my heart Noah’s Ark. I don’t know why, and I couldn’t explain it. I usually worked in politics and media. But it was something I just had to do.

I went searching and reading, and God led me to Noah’s Ark Scans. I sent Andrew Jones, the founder, an email and told him that I felt like God wanted me to help him. A few months later, we [got] approval from Turkish officials to study Noah’s Ark. A small team of American Christians received approval, and [yet] not a single Turkish official voted against it. It was totally God. All of this has been God.

Two weeks before the second and decisive round of the Brazilian presidential elections in October, US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was in Rio de Janeiro for the multi-day celebration of his son Conor’s wedding. The Kennedy scion married singer Giulia Be, a pop star born into a Brazilian right-wing clan, the Marinho family, who are close allies of the disgraced former President Jair Bolsonaro. The nuptials took place at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in historic downtown Rio, which once served the Portuguese royalty that colonized Brazil for more than 300 years.

A week later, supporters of then-presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro carried an inflatable missile with the words “Trump nuke Brazil” in English at a rally in the city of São Paulo. The symbolic image—apparently welcoming a US intervention in the country—may have shocked supporters of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva or Brazilians who value the country’s sovereignty. But family ties between right-wing clans, inflatable missiles, and requests for American military action against a perceived communist threat only begin to scratch the surface of the far-right’s increasing strength in Brazilian politics and its yearning for a closer connection with the Trump administration.

One of the world’s largest investment firms says that only tech companies are getting a share of the AI pie.

In an economic analysis published on Saturday, Apollo Global Management said that while the Magnificent Seven — a group of established tech companies that includes Nvidia and Meta — are seeing revenue growth during the AI boom, this growth isn’t being shared by other industries.

“Mainstream corporate America is pulling back and starting to view token spending not as a source of growth but as a cost center that weighs on margins,” Torsten Slok, a partner and chief economist at Apollo, said in the report. “The technology has delivered zero financial payoff to corporate America outside of tech.”

In a series of graphs, Slok measured three main metrics that have boomed for tech companies but not for regular companies: revenue per worker, profit margins, and productivity growth.
