Two Guns White Calf of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation inspired Walter “Blackie” Wetzel’s 1971 Redskins logo, which the franchise used until former owner Daniel Snyder abruptly discontinued it in 2020.
“He was such a leader, and he had a hold on the National Football League for 50 years,” said estate representative Morningstar Gopher.
While the logo and team moniker sparked controversy over the years, Native Americans overwhelmingly either supported the Redskins name or didn’t mind it.
“They tried to erase us, like we didn’t exist anymore,” estate lead Kenneth Conway told WTVR.
The family contends that after years of defending the team’s name, Snyder suddenly moved to cancel it without any consultation.

Passionate public protest is as French as “La Marseillaise,” the 1792 anthem that enshrines the collective duty to fight tyranny in the country’s national identity. But this month, the most violent demonstrations in years — and tough policing — have raised concern about riots overshadowing hundreds of thousands of peaceful demonstrators marching against rising living costs and poor conditions in schools.
On Saturday alone, at least 2,400 people were arrested after rioters in cities across France clashed with police, set cars on fire, stormed public buildings, looted stores and engulfed a historic city hall in flames. More protests could be in store.
“How can French people do this to France?” outgoing President Emmanuel Macron asked on Sunday. Nothing justifies the destruction, he added. “We all feel anger and shame.”
But any student of French history would know that the nation’s proud, loud and colorful protest culture has sometimes turned violent — starting with the beheadings of King Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette during the revolution that overthrew the monarchy in 1789.
Historians say the revolution was where the modern-day French tradition of civic engagement as a duty was born. The idea is that voting is not the only way to drive change; demonstration is considered a bedrock value, a way to make elites hear the populace and to defend freedoms. The moment a child becomes an activist is seen as a generations-old rite of passage. The right to protest is even constitutionally protected.
“It’s a way to build collective identity and political community,” said Magali Della Sudda, research director in political science at the French National Center for Scientific Research in Bordeaux.
France’s post-revolution history is not a solid story of protests and reforms, but of cycles of popular uprisings, repression, mobilization and political concessions. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has agreed to maintain race-blind admissions, require antisemitism training for students and employees, and strengthen protections for Jewish and Israeli students under a settlement with the Trump administration resolving federal civil rights investigations.
The university-wide agreement, announced Monday by the Department of Justice, covers UNC’s undergraduate, graduate and professional schools, along with its other programs. It will remain in effect through December 31, 2028.
The settlement resolves investigations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin at institutions receiving federal financial assistance. According to DOJ, the Education Department will close 18 active investigations, while the Justice Department will close a separate compliance review opened April 18, 2025.
“Title VI requires that all students — regardless of their ancestry or race — receive equal treatment under the law at federally funded colleges and universities,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon. “Higher ed policies and practices that tolerate antisemitism or favor certain racial groups over others frustrate our color-blind justice system,” she continued. “The Civil Rights Division commends UNC for its cooperation in meeting its obligations under federal law without the need for litigation; we hope other institutions will take note and do the same.”
Under the agreement, UNC must maintain policies to prevent and punish unlawful antisemitic discrimination, explicitly protect Jewish and Israeli students under its nondiscrimination policy, and promptly assess and investigate antisemitism complaints. Al-Ghazaly High School is an Islamic private institution in the New York City suburbs. Local officials approved the school, run by the Islamic Education Foundation, based on the understanding that it would school 90 students in its current property, according to a report from The New Jersey Progress.
Instead, the school has enrolled around 313 students since it was given a Certificate of Re-Occupancy earlier this year, and practically demanded that local authorities increase its authorized student number to 400.
During a planning board meeting last Tuesday, IEF Schools executive director Hayat Jaludi defended her decision to blatantly disregard the student limit based on the fact that, well, kids wanted to be educated.
Sure, she didn’t have permission, but she apparently didn’t think she needed it to flood the school and break the regulations.
“Hold on, hold on — how can you have 314 students in a building when you’re only allowed to have 90?” one of the board members asked.
Jaludi said that “we came into this building assuming that we have the occupancy of whatever enrolled students we have.”

I argue here that the “crazy” Iranian behavior confounding Washington in part reflects a subtle but important shift in Iran’s mindset. The U.S.-led attack was end-of-days fodder for true believers inside the upper echelons of the Islamic Republic, who listened to years of paranoid predictions about just such an apocalyptic attack at weekly Friday prayers. The surviving members of Iran’s inner circle — the New Tehran — are now acting based on an altered set of strategic principles. Despite the tactical brilliance of the U.S. military, the White House cannot find an endgame and risks turning a crisis into a catastrophe if it cannot adjust to Tehran’s new reality.
As a former CIA analyst, my job for many years was to set aside my personal views and instead see the world as Iranian leaders do. My goal was to get inside the heads of Tehran’s hardliners, who have very different perspectives than Western analysts. In recounting the first Trump administration’s ultimately inconclusive investigation into some of the same issues federal officials are examining anew concerning the congresswoman’s background, the Post reveals that Elmi once filed a petition to have his residency status, derived from his marriage-based green card, shifted from conditional to permanent. According to the newspaper, U.S. Customs and Immigration Services (USCIS) “requested additional evidence due to concerns over the validity of his marriage,” at which point Elmi pulled his application.
This immediately raises three questions: What was it in that application that gave immigration officials pause? Why was it that Elmi dropped his bid to obtain permanent residency if the marriage was legitimate? And did authorities in the first Trump administration vigorously pursue these issues, and are they vigorously pursuing them now to the extent there are potential legal issues arising therefrom not bound by statutes of limitation?
While the Post mentions this matter in passing, there is critical additional context here that the newspaper omitted, which ties Elmi’s abandonment of his permanent residency push to Omar.
Elmi almost certainly filed and then withdrew an I-751 petition. Under federal law, typically, within the 90-day period before “the second anniversary of the date on which an alien obtained” a green card, such aliens must file an I-751 to remove conditions on their residency. Absent circumstances like death or divorce, petitioners must file jointly with their spouses.

Student protests against the alleged rapes at Cornell University quickly devolved into a general airing of grievance by liberal activists.
Since many of the protests were organized by slew of left-wing groups on campuses, including pro-Palestinian and pro-abortion clubs, it only made sense they would use the opportunity to complain about their own pet issues.
All of the protests in the past few weeks had the primary goal of calling for changes in how sexual assault allegations are handled on specific college campuses as well as standing with the accuser in the Cornell frat party rape case.
That makes sense – insofar as students believe the sexual assault investigation process is broken, calling for changes (whatever they actually are) is a logical response.
But hey while we are all here, why not lay out our other complaints.
A rally at Harvard University called for “an independent grievance process for harassment and discrimination complaints” and “expanded resources for survivors,” according to the student newspaper.

Georgia offers a preview of what could follow Serbia’s election. The useful comparison is what happened after Georgia’s contested October 2024 vote. Georgian Dream turned an electoral dispute into an opportunity to narrow the space for opposition, watchdogs, and protest. Vucic has the tools to attempt something similar.
In Georgia, manipulation began well before Election Day. Georgian Dream passed a foreign-influence law targeting foreign-funded organizations and media. Election observers documented pressure on public employees, misuse of state resources, and compromised ballot secrecy in roughly a quarter of polling-station observations. More than 1,200 complaints followed the vote, but the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights found that many lacked effective remedies. Georgian Dream retained power, opposition parties rejected the results and boycotted parliament.
Georgian Dream intensified its crackdown after the election. Police violently dispersed protests and detained more than 500 demonstrators. Authorities also jailed opposition leaders and froze civil society groups’ bank accounts. Georgian Dream suspended its pursuit of EU accession talks until 2028, enacted tougher foreign-agent restrictions carrying prison sentences of up to five years, and required government approval for foreign grants. A decision by Elon Musk led to restrictions on Ukraine’s use of SpaceX’s satellite communications network, people familiar with the matter told CBS News.
The satellite service, which is used for drone operations, hitting certain targets and protecting sites in Ukraine, was slowed significantly last week.
Musk held multiple conversations with administration officials leading up to the order, the sources said. He wanted clarity on the president’s thinking on the matter. Musk has expressed distaste with his company being seen as profiting from the continued war between Russia and Ukraine.
It’s not clear how Musk’s order to curtail service was executed.
Musk licenses SpaceX’s Starshield technology to the U.S. government. He said last week the U.S. controls who can access the technology and what level of service those users receive.
“Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS,” Musk, the world’s richest person, wrote on X.
Musk did not reply to a request for comment. CBS News has reached out to the White House and the Pentagon for comment.

Times national reporter Jeremy Peters dropped the bombshell Monday morning on MS NOW’s “Morning Joe.” He pointed to “lifelong Jewish Democrats, especially in the Detroit suburbs, who are saying for the first time in their lives they’re voting Republican.”
“That’s a big deal,” Peters said. “I don’t know of any other marquee race in the country right now where the Republican candidate is converting Democrats.”
Rogers, the Republican, faces far-left Democrat Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan’s open Senate seat. Voters decide Nov. 3.
Peters knows the turf. “I grew up not far from where El-Sayed is from,” he told the hosts.
He called it “really quite striking” that some Democrats are “so concerned about their party’s nominee” that they’re “willing to vote for the candidate who’s aligned with Donald Trump.”

Fox still favors Donalds. The new rating warns that the race in President Trump’s home state has become competitive enough that a serious upset can no longer be dismissed.
The reason Fox highlighted should command every Republican’s attention: Hispanic support for the GOP appears to be sliding after becoming a central part of Trump’s winning Florida coalition.
Donalds went on Fox and rejected the premise. He said his campaign’s internal numbers show Hispanic support growing, not shrinking, and that support among voters overall is moving his way.
One of those assessments will be proven right on November 3. The margin between them is the entire story.
