The report, released Tuesday by the civil rights nonprofit group Chinese for Affirmative Action, pointed to five dominant narratives emerging — largely on WeChat — including the idea that banning guns is a step toward authoritarianism, while gun ownership represents “democracy.”

Another popular belief the report surfaced is that U.S. law enforcement isn’t obligated to protect people, so gun ownership is a necessary element of self-defense, particularly amid an era of anti-Asian hate.

“We are worried the same tragedies will happen again and again,” said Jinxia Niu, the program manager of CAA’s Chinese digital engagement initiative, speaking about gun violence.

Trump is going full martyr here, as he is afraid of being put in prison, but he also thinks it will help him politically. Here is a rundown.

Economists have previously told PolitiFact that this is False.

The strongest evidence in favor of this assertion, at least in the U.S. context, is the unemployment rate. On Trump’s watch, the unemployment rate fell to levels untouched since the early 1950s.

However, the annual increases in gross domestic product — the sum of a country’s economic activity — were broadly similar under Trump to what they were during the final six years under his predecessor, Barack Obama. And GDP growth under Trump was well below that of previous presidents.

The eventual prevalence of a piece of misinformation may depend on its topic and the country in which it spreads, with notable differences between the UK, Germany, France and Italy, according to a study published May 8 in the open-access journal PLOS ONE by Fabiana Zollo from the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Italy, and colleagues. This finding suggests that policies to combat misinformation and polarization may need to be context-specific in order to be effective, the authors say.

Researchers analyzed news activity on Twitter (now X) in France, Germany, Italy and the UK from 2019 to 2021, including a focus on news about Brexit, the coronavirus, and the COVID vaccines. Each news source they analyzed was rated as either “reliable” or “questionable” based upon their NewsGuard (a tool that evaluates the reliability of news outlets based on nine journalistic criteria) score.

Across all four countries, the vast majority of users only ever consumed reliable news sources on each of the three topics. But in every country and in each topic, there was always a small percentage of users who only ever consumed questionable news sources—with very few people consuming a mix of both reliable and questionable sources.

FreedomWorks announced on Wednesday that it was closing up shop for good. The organization was a heavy-hitter during the Tea Party movement’s heyday, doing a lot of good work in training conservative political activists. I was a frequent speaker at FreedomWorks events, and helped train some of the new kids as well. The group’s annual BlogCon events were like CPAC but for just the people we wanted to hang out with (Stephen Green will back me up on this). 

I even used to do some serious writing for FreedomWorks. Stuff about policy. And stuff. 

The organization started to lose its way after 2012 and the news of its demise was unfortunate, but expected. 





The Never Trumpers had a big hand in bringing about the end. As always, they blame Trump for everything. 

Because they’re horrible people. 

That’s what we’re talking about in this episode.

Bacteria Makes Electricity Out of Water in Air

Researchers from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) of Australia claim to have taken protein filaments produced by bacteria and engineered them to be able to create electricity from the water in the air.

One of the researchers, Lorenzo Travaglini, said of the work “…we genetically engineered a fiber using the bacteria E. coli… We modified the DNA of E. coli so that the bacteria not only produced the proteins that it needed to survive but also built the specific protein we had designed, which we then engineered and assembled into nanowires in the lab.”

Researchers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia have successfully engineered protein filaments produced by bacteria so that they can conduct electricity and even harness it using moisture from the air. This interdisciplinary research, comprising protein engineering and nanoelectronics, could one day help scientists develop ‘green electronics,’ a university press release said.

…The UNSW team furthered the research on bacterial nanowires, which showed that when haem molecules are arranged closely together, they can also perform electron transfer. Travaglini and his team integrated haem into their engineered filaments, hoping that the electrons would jump between the haem molecules if placed sufficiently close to each other.

By measuring the conductance of the filaments in the presence and absence of haem molecules, the researchers confirmed that the iron-based molecule was making the protein conductive.

During their extensive tests, the researchers found that the electric current was stronger when the ambient conditions were between 20 and 30 percent humidity.

When the tests were repeated with increasing amounts of conductive material sandwiched between the electrodes, the researchers confirmed that humidity created a charge gradient across the material and generated additional current without applying additional potential.

The researchers then devised a humidity sensor that generated electric current even when one exhaled on it.

Kroger Continues to Persecute Unvaccinated Workers

Kroger is making changes to its employee handbook that target the unvaccinated with a $50 a month “tax” and cut them off from having any “paid pandemic-related leave.”

The company is not able to fire unvaccinated workers outright, so it seems it is intending on pressuring them out instead. The yearly cost for each unvaccinated employee is $600, presuming they or one of their family members don’t suffer pandemic-related needs that could force them to miss work with no hope of being given paid leave as vaccinated workers would be able to rest on.

In a bid to push more of its workers to get vaccinated against COVID-19, Kroger will eliminate paid pandemic-related leave and charge $50 per month to employees that haven’t gotten shots.

Kroger stopped short of mandating COVID-19 vaccinations for workers, but said it is “modifying policies to encourage safe behaviors including vaccination.” Company officials added the grocer will also continue to offer a one-time $100 bonus to workers that get fully vaccinated.

The $50 surcharge goes into effect Jan. 1 and applies to salaried associates enrolled in a company health plan. The extra expense would cost an employee $600 per year.

Judge Puts Trump on Notice for Jail Time After Finding Him in Contempt for Tenth Time

Judge Juan Merchan found former President Donald Trump in contempt of court for the tenth time, leading to a warning about possible jail time.

Trump faces 30 days at the most if he violates it again.

“Because the offensive statement was made prior to this Court’s Decision of April 30 and because the People are seeking only a monetary fine, the Court will, once again, fine Defendant, $1,000,” Merchan wrote in his filing.

Merchan continued: “However, because this is now the tenth time that this Court has found Defendant in criminal contempt, spanning three separate motions, it is apparent that monetary fines have not, and will not, suffice to deter Defendant from violating this Court’s lawful orders.”

Merchan the put Trump “on notice that if appropriate and warranted, future violations of its lawful orders will be punishable by incarceration.”

In court, Merchan admitted he worries about sending Trump to jail as he pointed to the Secret Service:

“The last thing I want to consider is jail,” Merchan said. “You are [the] former president and possibly the next president.”

“The magnitude of that decision is not lost on me,” Merchan said. “Your continued willful violation of the court’s order…constitutes a direct attack…and will not be allowed to continue…It is not allowed to continue.”

After TikTok’s CEO told the American congress he was no communist asset, nor was his company, a court filing by the CCP-owned company proves TikTok is, in fact, nothing but a CCP asset that operates only through CCP approval. In a court filing protesting the passage of a law that would ban the CCP-controlled app, TikTok admitted that due to the Chinese government’s direct control of its company, it couldn’t even legally sell the asset to a non-CCP entity even if they wanted to.

Michael Sobolik, a senior fellow at the American Foreign Policy Council, said of the filing, “For years, TikTok has asserted its legal and operational independence from the Chinese Communist Party. TikTok admitted as much in its federal petition against the law and said what every serious person has known for years: the Chinese Communist Party will not permit a divestment,” he continued. “That’s not a problem for the American people. That’s a problem for TikTok.”

TikTok and its parent company ByteDance filed a lawsuit against the United States on Tuesday claiming it is “unconstitutional” for the government to force the app to be sold by its Chinese owner or be outright banned in the U.S.

In addition to the expected — yet inadequate — arguments as to why TikTok should remain under Chinese ownership and available to American users on First Amendment grounds, the complaint makes a significant admission about how valuable TikTok is to the Chinese Communist Party.

On pages 18 and 19 of the complaint, TikTok’s attorneys argue that the app’s foundational algorithm can’t be passed off to another entity to remain available in the United States…because the Chinese Communist Party won’t allow it (emphasis added):

Third, the Chinese government has made clear that it would not permit a divestment of the recommendation engine that is a key to the success of TikTok in the United States. Like the United States, China regulates the export of certain technologies originating there. China’s export control rules cover “information processing technologies” such as “personal interactive data algorithms.” China’s official news agency has reported that under these rules, any sale of recommendation algorithms developed by engineers employed by ByteDance subsidiaries, including TikTok, would require a government license. China also enacted an additional export control law that “gives the Chinese government new policy tools and justifications to deny and impose terms on foreign commercial transactions.” China adopted these enhanced export control restrictions between August and October 2020, shortly after President Trump’s August 6, 2020 and August 14, 2020 executive orders targeting TikTok. By doing so, the Chinese government clearly signaled that it would assert its export control powers with respect to any attempt to sever TikTok’s operations from ByteDance, and that any severance would leave TikTok without access to the recommendation engine that has created a unique style and community that cannot be replicated on any other platform today.

Engineers at Princeton and North Carolina State University have combined ancient paper-folding and modern materials science to create a soft robot that bends and twists through mazes with ease.

Soft robots can be challenging to guide because steering equipment often increases the robot’s rigidity and cuts its flexibility. The new design overcomes those problems by building the steering system directly into the robot’s body, said Tuo Zhao, a postdoctoral researcher at Princeton.

In an article, titled “Modular Multi-degree-of-freedom Soft Origami Robots with Reprogrammable Electrothermal Actuation” published May 6 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers describe how they created the robot out of modular, cylindrical segments. The segments, which can operate independently or join to form a longer unit, all contribute to the robot’s ability to move and steer. The new system allows the flexible robot to crawl forward and reverse, pick up cargo and assemble into longer formations.

“The concept of modular soft robots can provide insight into future soft robots that can grow, repair, and develop new functions,” the authors write in their article.

A West Virginia judge granted a preliminary injunction allowing several middle school girls to compete after the school district banned them from competition after refusing to play against a biological male, according to 12 WBOY, a local media outlet.

Five middle school female athletes forfeited their positions at a track meet in April after they were informed that they would have to compete against a biological male, prompting the school district to allegedly bar the girls from future competitions, according to WDTV News. The students sued and Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrisey of West Virginia filed an amicus brief in support of the students.

A Harrison County judge ordered that the school’s decision be temporarily halted while the lawsuit plays out, according to 12 WBOY.

“I want to say to these students and their parents: I have your backs,” Morrisey said in a press release. “You saw unfairness and you expressed your disappointment and sacrificed your personal performances in a sport that you love; exercised your constitutionally protected freedom of speech and expression.”

Subsequently, we now have another city declaring itself a trans sanctuary for minors, with emphasis on the part that is dedicated to children.

The Austin City Council passed a resolution that would de facto stop the enforcement of SB 14, which essentially bans gender-affirming care for minors.

Texas attorney general Ken Paxton is threatening to hold the city of Austin’s leaders accountable for openly defying the state’s law prohibiting health-care providers from performing irreversible transgender medical procedures on children.

The Austin City Council voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to pass a resolution offering protections for minors who identify as transgender and instructing police not to prioritize enforcement of SB 14, a law signed by Republican governor Greg Abbott last year banning hormonal and surgical interventions meant to facilitate a minor’s gender transition.

“If the City of Austin refuses to follow the law and protect children, my office will consider every possible response to ensure compliance,” Paxton, a Republican, said upon the resolution’s passage. “Texas municipalities do not have the authority to pick and choose which state laws they will or will not abide by. The people of Texas have spoken, and Austin City Council must listen.”

The bank reportedly had a total of $6 billion in total assets and $4 billion in total deposits, according to Yahoo Finance. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp estimated the cost of the failure to its fund would be about $667 million.
