I don’t know how Leslie stays in California.
The Trump administration asked a court for a temporary restraining order to stop California from counting 20,000 ballots from people the feds believe aren’t legally allowed to vote.
Most of those people live in Los Angeles County.
Monica Flores, an assistant registrar-recorder for the Candidate and Voter
Services Bureau of the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, wrote a declaration to oppose the TRO.
Flores made a shocking admission (emphasis mine):
The DOJ’s proposed order would also require the Registrar to verify the citizenship of each affected voter. The Registrar is not equipped or authorized to verify voter citizenship because it does not independently house citizenship-related information beyond the voter attestation as identified in federal and state law (such as, among other things, immigration records, travel records, naturalization records, etc.) and certainly is not equipped to do so within the election period. California has not authorized use of the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (“SAVE”) program for the 2026 General Election, and the Registrar has no direct access to federal citizenship data. The DOJ has not explained what information would be provided to the Registrar to assist with this determination nor described any process by which the Registrar would be given information or authority such that it could verify citizenship. Further, while the DOJ has stated that it would also verify citizenship, it has stated, despite its investigative authority, it cannot investigate the people on its list before the election concludes. It is not clear how Los Angeles County, in the middle of the election cycle, would be better positioned to verify U.S. citizenship than the Federal Government or that it has any identified authority to do so. And it is certainly not clear how Los Angeles County can be expected to complete this verification within the election period when the government itself has stated it cannot do so.
