“The Single Most Toxic Issue in the Midterms”: How America Turned on Data Centers. – Mother Jones– www.motherjones.com

EXCERPT:

Tim Murphy joins Garrison Hayes to break down the bipartisan revolt against data centers.

America is hopelessly divided along party lines. That’s a stubborn fact, we’re told, and the polling bears it out: Democrats dislike Republicans and Republicans dislike Democrats, in almost precisely the same proportions.

But every election produces surprising coalitions that defy entrenched partisanship. In these midterms, left and right have found something so commonly loathed that politicians across the country are flip-flopping in real time.

Mother Jones has been tracking the backlash to data centers on the ground long before the water-guzzling behemoths became the country’s bête noire. The AI boom, with its insatiable need for computing, has unleashed a power grab by tech billionaires. “Data centers have replaced megayachts as the preferred theater of oligarchic status signaling,” national correspondent Tim Murphy wrote in his big Mother Jones investigation into hyperscale data centers and the communities they land on. “Oligarchy is now more than an idea; it is a place.”

A new report published by the Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) shows federal taxpayers are losing up to $521 billion annually to fraud and improper payments.

According to Just the News, the report estimates that improper payments by the federal government have totaled about $3 trillion since 2003.

Improper payments are defined by the federal government as payments in the incorrect amount, payments to the wrong person or someone who is not eligible to receive the payment, or payments that lack documentation confirming their accuracy, according to the FGA.

Liesel Crocker, the report’s author and senior research fellow at FGA, told The Center Square, “Fraud against federal programs now runs about $521 billion a year, or seven percent of everything Washington spends. Only five federal agencies have bigger budgets than that.”

Crocker continued, “And that’s just the fraud we know about. Of more than 2,200 federal payment programs, only 64 are reviewed for improper payments each year.”

The Pentagon Hopes to Speed Up ‘Kill Chain’ AI Buys With 5-Minute Videos– www.wired.com

An under-the-radar procurement program led by the Department of Defense has been granting special statuses to would-be defense contractors that make it easier for the government to quickly purchase their AI offerings, based on product videos that must be no longer than five minutes.

It’s part of the Pentagon’s desperate bid to inject competition in a market the United States military itself destroyed.

The initiative, known as Tradewinds, is managed by DOD’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO.) Companies can submit videos describing how their AI products address one of several different “strategic focus areas” that the government periodically updates. At least once a month, a panel of judges review submissions and decide whether to accept them into the Tradewinds Solutions Marketplace, where the videos can then be viewed by government officials.

If accepted, the pitched products are considered “post-competitive.” Many procurement regulations include competitive requirements. The status can let government buyers check off that box and potentially help shave months off of award timelines. A DOD official says that in several instances, the department has been able to make awards using Tradewinds in less than a week. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are all listed as participants.

How to Defend Against AI-Designed Viruses– warontherocks.com

EXCERPT:

Anthropic recently disclosed five cases in which users hid their countries while asking Claude for help enhancing pathogens or toxins. This added fuel to the ongoing debate over whether progress in AI should be slowed. Insider warnings of threats to human lives from artificial intelligence have been received as everything from prescient humility to a hoax or marketing stunt. But in a world where AI-designed biological viruses have already been grown in the lab, the threats should be reckoned with in any biodefense strategy.

The “AI doomer” model of biological risks is that AI will develop intelligence beyond that of any human, leading it to invent a supervirus so much more powerful and fatal than anything in the world that our civilization will collapse. Adherents name this “x-risk.” An opposite view is that virus design is such a hard problem that AI won’t add anything beyond what the best humans can do, and that malicious actors — even state actors — would require access to so much top expertise that production is unfeasible.

Doomerism justifies unrealistic and destabilizing solutions (like bombing data centers) while the dismissiveness of certain biologists — including some, like Claus Wilke and David Bellamy, who are AI experts with experience in synthetic virus design — fosters a complacency that leaves us vulnerable to AI threats.

More Ken Paxton audio leaked after he was heard saying Trump was a problem– www.independent.co.uk

More controversial audio of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton at a Washington fundraiser has leaked, revealing the Senate candidate’s thoughts on what to cut in the federal budget.

The latest audio leak comes after Paxton, whom Trump endorsed, was caught blaming the president’s war in Iran for “dragging” on his campaign at the same private event last month.

When asked about reducing the federal deficit, Paxton told lobbyists and donors, “Making some reasonable cuts to mandatory spending — you’re gonna have to do it. Or there is no solution. That’s just the reality. We have to suck it up,” according to the new audio recording obtained by The Texas Tribune.

Mandatory spending — which is comprised of programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid — makes up the bulk of the federal budget. In the 2025 fiscal year, the government spent $4.2 trillion on such programs, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Paxton blamed both Republican and Democratic presidents for the “crazy” spending, which he warned will “bankrupt” the U.S., according to the recording.

WASHINGTON, October 6. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump has approved the execution by firing squad of Nidal Hasan, an American of Palestinian descent and a military psychiatrist who killed 13 people and wounded 32 others in a 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, Assistant to the Secretary of War for Public Affairs Sean Parnell said.

“Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has recommended – and President Donald J. Trump has approved – death by US Army firing squad for convicted terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan, the jihadist who opened fire on unarmed American soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009,” Parnell wrote on X.

It was the deadliest shooting of its kind ever carried out at a US military base. Hasan was shot several times while being apprehended in November 2009 and was left paralyzed from the waist down. In August 2013, a military jury unanimously sentenced him to death. The trial was held at Fort Hood. Hasan represented himself and made no attempt to establish his innocence.

The US Army’s Fort Hood, the country’s largest military base, is located near Killeen, Texas, and has nearly 40,000 personnel. The building where Hasan opened fire was demolished in 2014, and a memorial to the victims was erected at the site in 2016.

New York Defied ICE Detainers. Then the Illegal Aliens Stabbed a Detective. – PJ Media– pjmedia.com

EXCERPT:

New York City authorities have been overlooking crime after crime by two Dominican illegal aliens whom the Biden administration released into our country. Democrats even refused to cooperate with a federal custody request. Then the illegal aliens stabbed a New York Police Department detective.

In other words, if either the Biden administration or the Adams or Mamdani administration in New York had followed the law, these two illegal aliens would not have been in our country at all; they would have been in federal custody and deported a long time ago. We do not know for certain just how many crimes in America would never have happened in the absence of Democrats’ open borders and soft-on-crime policies, but the number is no doubt high.

Sources within the Department of Homeland Security shared the information about the burglary and stabbing with Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin on Tuesday. The biggest problem right now is that the violent foreign criminals are currently on the run.

ABC’s Fight With Trump’s FCC Hits Federal Court — Judge Orders More Briefing– wltreport.com

EXCERPT:

ABC’s legal fight with President Trump’s Federal Communications Commission reached a federal courtroom Tuesday, and neither side walked out with an immediate victory.

Instead, U.S. District Judge Loren AliKhan ordered more briefing after a two-hour hearing over the FCC’s unusual decision to accelerate license-renewal proceedings for eight ABC-owned television stations.

ABC says the early reviews are retaliation for programming and editorial decisions the Trump administration dislikes. Government lawyers say the network is trying to bring the case in the wrong court before the agency has taken a final action.

That clash leaves a serious question hanging over the case: is this a First Amendment emergency, or an attempt to stop a regulatory process before it has actually produced an order?

The federal docket history shows that ABC, Disney, and the eight station licensees filed suit in August against the FCC and Chairman Brendan Carr.

The companies asked for declaratory and injunctive relief and moved for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction. Their goal is to stop the FCC from taking further action in the accelerated proceedings while the constitutional case is litigated.

A Pennsylvania judge just found out the hard way that there are, in fact, consequences for being overtly partisan.

On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) denied former Judge Mark Cohen’s petition for certiorari, leaving in place a 2024 ruling by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court that upheld his suspension over a years-long stream of partisan Facebook posts.

Cohen wasn’t particularly shy about letting his feelings be known on his page, posting everything from his unabashed praise of Pennsylvania’s Democrat governor, Josh Shapiro, to his thoughts on Tennessee restricting Critical Race Theory (CRT) being taught in state classrooms (“Shameless retrogression!”).

In short, his public postings read like Democrat Party talking points.

Cohen apparently started his Facebook page back in 2007 when he was serving in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, supposedly “to get people involved in the Democratic Party” and to inform his constituents about important issues.

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito said he plans to stay on the court through next year, brushing aside speculation that he could retire early and let President Donald Trump fill his seat after the election but before a new Congress is sworn in next year.

“I intend to stick around through this term,” Alito, 76, said in an interview with Bloomberg News. “I made that decision many months ago.”

The Supreme Court began its new term on Monday, which will last through next June.

Alito, the second-oldest justice on the bench, was in the news last week after telling CBS News that he considered retiring this year and will do so again in 2027.

Donald Trump Calls Candidate Annie Andrews Anti-Trans Slur– www.usmagazine.com

EXCERPT:

President Donald Trump has sparked controversy once again after using an anti-trans slur to attack Democratic South Carolina Senate candidate Annie Andrews.

“Annie ‘Trannie’ Andrews is running against our wonderful Darline Graham for the Senate in South Carolina,” Trump, 80, wrote via TruthSocial on Monday, October 5. “For years, my dear friend Lindsey [Graham] would say that, ‘Darline is the finest, most reliable and one of the smartest people I have ever known.’ He would then always add, ‘Also, the most loyal!’ Oftentimes I would be upset with Lindsey for saying this, because I thought I had all of those qualities.”

The commander in chief continued, “In any event, Darline is a high quality person, maybe the Highest, and Annie Trannie is not, in particular, as it pertains to representing the Values of the Great People of South Carolina.”

Trump claimed Andrews, 45, is in favor of “transgender for everyone, open borders, defunding the police, high taxes, a weak military and will absolutely fight to take your guns away” — a common attack the president uses against Democratic opponents without any evidence.

During the program’s announcement, Mamdani’s wife attended a luxury retreat hosted by a group that called for the abolition of Israel.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s new antisemitism strategy doubles funding for a community grant program whose partners include an anti-Israel organization previously led by Linda Sarsour, while omitting Zionism and declining to adopt a definition of antisemitism.

According to City Hall’s announcement, the strategy includes $6.4 million for Partners Against the Hate, or PATH, doubling the program’s funding from the previous year. However, among PATH’s six core partners is the Arab American Association of New York, which Sarsour led for more than a decade. The organization supported the Columbia University’s violent Gaza encampment and other anti-Israel protests following October 7, according to the New York Post.

The September 29 announcement coincided with his wife’s participation in a luxury Islamic wellness retreat in Portugal organized by Women Sanctuary, which had publicly called for Israel’s abolition.

Sarsour’s relationship with Mamdani extends beyond campaigning for him. She warned that her activist network would hold him to his campaign promises, including dismantling the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group, which responds to major protests and other emergencies. “Electing Zohran doesn’t mean we’re going to let him do whatever the hell he wants when he gets to City Hall,” Sarsour said.

Sarsour has a long history of antisemitic statements, including her assertion: “Israel was built on the idea that Jews are supreme to everybody else.” Sarsour left Women’s March leadership in 2019 amid controversies over antisemitism.

Ed Martin Reveals Tina Peters’ New Oval Office Meeting With Trump — And Hints at What Comes Next– wltreport.com
News Source
EXCERPT:

Something serious is moving behind the scenes on election integrity — and one of the movement’s most recognizable figures was just back in the Oval Office.

Former Justice Department official Ed Martin revealed Monday that former Colorado clerk Tina Peters met with President Donald Trump at the White House only hours before Martin went on the air.

This was not described as a courtesy visit. Martin said Peters and the president were discussing election integrity, voting-system security and what comes next with the midterms now only weeks away.

That timing matters.

Here is the on-air clip, with the three subjects Martin put on the table: voting machines, election security and the SAVE America Act.

The meeting appears to be Peters’ latest visit with Trump, not her first.

She met with Trump at the White House this summer after her release from prison. This week’s meeting is different because Martin described an active policy discussion with Election Day closing in.

Peters became a national figure after her prosecution in Colorado over access to county election equipment following the 2020 election. She was convicted in 2024 and given a nine-year sentence before Democratic Gov. Jared Polis commuted it in May under sustained pressure from Trump and his allies.

Whatever anyone thinks of that case, the political reality is now impossible to miss: Trump has kept Peters close, and her views are reaching the Oval Office while his administration pushes a broader election-security agenda.

Reporter Liz Landers asked the White House to confirm the new meeting. The response did not deny it; spokeswoman Lauren Bis said the administration does not comment on private meetings that may or may not have taken place.

The immediate congressional backdrop is the SAVE America Act.

The Trump-backed legislation combines proof-of-citizenship requirements for voter registration with photo-identification rules for federal elections. It cleared the House but failed to reach the 60 votes needed to advance in the Senate.

Every Senate Democrat voted against the latest package, which also included a congressional stock-trading ban. The bill fell seven votes short of the threshold needed to advance.

Martin argued that Congress’ failure to act could force the administration to look at other lawful options. He left the mechanism open, and no new executive action has appeared on the White House docket.

But the national-security framework he described is already public.

The White House election-integrity portal includes newly declassified assessments on electronic voting systems, foreign access to election-related networks and supply-chain risks created by components manufactured abroad. It organizes the material into separate sections on voting systems, foreign acquisition of voter data, noncitizens on voter rolls and foreign-made machine parts.

The administration says those records show that China, Russia, Iran, North Korea and other hostile actors possess capabilities that could threaten parts of American election infrastructure. The page also highlights federal findings concerning foreign-made voting-machine parts and the risks of tampering before equipment is assembled or deployed.

One declassified assessment says centralized election-data repositories — including voter-registration databases, electronic pollbooks and official election websites — are especially attractive targets. Another section argues that a compromised component could create a point of entry before a machine ever reaches a county warehouse.

That is a vulnerability finding, not proof that a foreign government changed vote totals in a past American election. The distinction matters — and so does the fact that the vulnerability exists at all.

A separate White House release said Trump’s July address focused on dangerous, ongoing weaknesses and the ability of foreign adversaries to exploit them. The administration argued that officials had withheld important assessments while the public was repeatedly assured that the systems were secure.

The release points to intelligence describing adversaries’ technical ability to access election-related networks, as well as reporting that Venezuela’s Maduro regime developed methods to alter vote totals in its own elections. The White House presented those records as a warning about what American systems must be built to withstand, not as a substitute for evidence about a particular U.S. race.

That narrower claim is still consequential. A government does not have to prove that an attack already succeeded before replacing vulnerable components, tightening audits or requiring systems that voters can verify with their own eyes.

The federal response is already moving beyond speeches and document releases.

Supporters following the clip understood Martin’s message the same way: something larger may be coming, but the administration has not shown its hand.

The official transcript of Trump’s July 16 address shows the president framing election reforms as an urgent federal priority. He called on Congress to pass nationwide safeguards and tied the issue directly to public confidence in the vote.

Now Peters is back in the Oval Office, Martin is openly talking about plans, and Election Day is closing in.

The White House has not announced a new order, and major legal questions remain. What is already clear is that Trump is not treating election integrity as a campaign slogan to be dusted off every four years.

He is bringing the people who fought these battles into the room, putting the federal government’s own threat assessments on the table and signaling that the stalled Senate bill may not be the end of the story.

The next move has not been announced yet.

After this meeting, it is getting harder to believe there will not be one.

With just 28 days remaining until he faces off against Republican candidate Ken Paxton, Democrat James Talarico is nowhere to be found.

Talarico has not been seen publicly in Texas in over a week, with his last appearance occurring on Saturday, September 26, before he took a fundraising trip to New York City. There, he was treated to a VIP fundraising dinner where attendees, like a filmmaker who labeled America a “shithole” and a group that advocates for child sex change surgeries, were charged $27,000 a plate.

On Wednesday, September 30 Talarico was slated to speak with the U.S. Hispanic Business Council in the Rio Grande Valley, but instead joined virtually from a hotel because “his staff says he’s ill and was unable to travel.” During the appearance, Talarico claimed that he was forced to seek care at an urgent care clinic in Dallas, but social media users have disputed the timeline offered by the candidate.

Then, on Friday, October 2, the Talarico campaign chose to recycle footage from a February 22 rally before Talarico had even won the Democrat nomination, and tried to pass it off as current.

BEIJING: China called on France and Germany to steer clear of “protectionist” trade measures on Tuesday (Oct 6), after their leaders urged the European Union to develop a legal arsenal for a potential trade war.

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that “we need a credible instrument” for swift and decisive action.

This includes the ability to cut off access to the European single market “if needed”, according to the letter seen by AFP on Monday.

Macron and Merz stopped short of explicitly naming China but their letter comes just days before EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic heads to Beijing to tackle trade frictions.

China’s commerce ministry, in a statement on Tuesday, urged France and Germany to “refrain from encouraging the EU to resort to protectionist tools at every turn”.

“We hope that France and Germany, as major economies in the world, will uphold openness, cooperation and free trade,” the ministry said in a statement.

“They should avoid going down the wrong path in the wrong way, only to ultimately suffer the consequences themselves.”

With fewer than 35 days until Election Day, one thing should be clear: Republicans are ready to protect the ballot box.

Election integrity isn’t something you build in the final weeks of a campaign. It takes years of preparation, a nationwide infrastructure, and a commitment to ensuring only legal votes are counted and election laws are followed.

That’s exactly what the Republican National Committee (RNC) has spent the last two years doing.

Under President Donald Trump’s leadership, the RNC has built the strongest election integrity operation in party history. We’ve answered President Trump’s call to make election security a top priority and are protecting the vote like never before.

As Americans begin casting ballots, Republicans are prepared to defend the integrity of our elections at every step. That starts with boots on the ground.

Today, the RNC has Election Integrity Directors deployed in 22 target states. We’ve recruited a record number of poll workers, surpassing every previous RNC benchmark. We’ve positioned attorneys, election observers, and trained volunteers in competitive districts and states. And on Election Day, we’ll have a fully operational war room ready to respond in real time.

The CDC is monitoring a suspected plague death at a Russian research institute after reports that nearly 200 people who had contact with a laboratory technician were placed under medical observation.

The woman worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute in Siberia. Russian authorities have not confirmed plague as the cause of her death, and how she may have become infected remains unclear.

Russian health officials said Tuesday that no plague cases had been detected among her contacts, Reuters reported. The reported monitoring of nearly 200 people does not establish that they were exposed to plague.

U.S. officials are tracking the case, though the CDC said there is no indication of a broader threat to Americans.

“CDC is aware of and closely monitoring reports of a suspected case of pneumonic plague in the Irkutsk region of Russia that resulted in a death. We are working across the U.S. government to assess developments as additional information becomes available,” the agency wrote on X.

The State Department also said it was following the reports.

“We are aware of reports of a fatal case of suspected pneumonic plague in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia,” an official with the State Department told NewsNation. “We are monitoring the situation closely with the CDC and our other interagency partners.”
