Those figures include flows via the Red Sea, a route increasingly used to bypass the blockade Iran is attempting to impose on the strait, through which around a fifth of the world’s petroleum supplies crossed before the conflict.

Iran still claims control over the strait, and ships without its authorization risk coming under attack, but more and more are making it out, and alternative routes meant to bypass the waterway are operating at full capacity.

Despite the rebound, experts stressed that the situation is far from normal, and Iran is still being deprived of a large share of its own exports by a U.S. counterblockade of Iranian ports.

France’s defence ministry said on Tuesday it had conducted the first test launch of its latest-generation M51.3 submarine-launched ballistic missile, underscoring its nuclear deterrent amid heightened tensions with Russia.

The M51.3 missile, which was not equipped with a nuclear warhead, was launched off the coast of Brittany as part of an operation to certify the nuclear-submarine Le Vigilant’s ability to deploy the weapon following a major maintenance overhaul, the ministry said in a statement.

It said the launch was conducted without a payload and in strict compliance with international obligations.

While the announcement made no mention of Russia, the test comes after President Vladimir Putin warned the West last week not to escalate a standoff over Ukraine by threatening the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, which is wedged between EU members Poland and Lithuania and which Moscow has made clear it would defend with nuclear weapons if necessary.

NATO has said none of its “exercises or activities pose a threat to the territory of the Russian Federation”. Putin also said Russia had no plans to attack any European country and wanted to coexist peacefully.

“Today we are stronger. The message has been sent loud and clear for wherever it must be received,” President Emmanuel Macron said in a video on X showing him watching the launch.

Macron said in March France would expand its nuclear arsenal and launched an initiative offering European partners joint exercises, the possible short-term deployment of nuclear-capable assets on allied territory and deeper consultation.

While discussing the conflict, Trump described its economic impact as a “small price to pay” to keep the country safe. He then bizarrely applied that logic concerning the possibility of an attack on a major American city, telling the crowd, “They can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego.”

Even more disturbing was the crowd’s response: they cheered rather than recoiled. We’re used to Trump’s deranged remarks, but there’s something extremely disturbing about the idea of thousands of people enthusiastically applauding the notion that millions of their fellow Americans could be sacrificed as an acceptable “price to pay.”

Trump’s comments immediately drew condemnation from California officials. Gov. Gavin Newsom called the president “deranged and dangerous,” while Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said a president’s responsibility is to protect Americans, not threaten them or encourage attacks against them.

The United States has discussed starting reciprocal visits to nuclear sites with China, and plans to continue pushing in meetings in the coming months, CNN reported on Tuesday (Oct 6), citing sources familiar with the matter.

The idea of reciprocal visits was initially raised by China in meetings with US officials this year and visits to US Department of Energy national laboratories and equivalent Chinese facilities were discussed, CNN said, citing a source.

The discussions between US and Chinese officials have mainly been on the sidelines of gatherings by the UN Security Council’s five veto-wielding permanent members, CNN reported.

Reuters could not immediately verify the report. The White House and the Chinese embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comment outside business hours.

US President Donald Trump called for trilateral arms control negotiations between the US, China and Russia when he met President Xi Jinping last month. However, the two leaders did not discuss the possibility of nuclear site visits during their talks, the CNN report said, citing a US official.
