The gunman who was shot by police when he opened fire at an officer guarding an Ontario synagogue on Yom Kippur over the weekend has died at the hospital. He has been identified as Sean Ward of Quinte West.

A gunman armed with a shotgun opened fire on a police officer guarding an Ontario synagogue as roughly 25 Jews gathered inside for Yom Kippur services, setting off a firefight that sent bullets through the house of worship and left the officer critically wounded. Authorities identified the alleged gunman as 29-year-old Sean Ward of Quinte West.
Investigators said Ward arrived near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, at approximately 7 pm Sunday, exited a truck with a shotgun and fired at an officer stationed outside the building.
The officer, identified as Const. Jeff Smith, returned fire before another officer arrived and also discharged his weapon. Smith, a 13-year veteran of the Belleville Police Service and member of its emergency response unit, suffered serious gunshot wounds and remained in critical but stable condition Monday.
